An oath on British Values?

Latest proposal is that all immigrants should be made to take an oath to abide by British values before even coming in to the country.
What would those values be? I doubt you could get much agreement between those of us born and bred here.
England, Scotland, Wales, NI? North, south, east, west?

More of this needed. In fact there are lots of videos on the More in Common theme.

I haven't read all this thread, so probably missed a lot.
I believe it should be possible for people from different faiths and backgrounds to live together without giving up their own religions, faiths, cultures. It happens in other countries, why not the UK?
I've just realised that our 2 eldest, sons, are proof of this to some extent. They both teach in international schools, one in Kuwait, and the other in India.
Their early childhood was spent in Singapore, maybe that's something to do with it.
So I don't agree with the oath on British values for immigrants.

Are you having a glass of wine already Durhamjen? It's not even 7pm yet ! shock

gillybob Tue 06-Dec-16 18:28:53

I have been known to pace up and down waiting for the clock to hit the 7 mark before taking a swig

Ana Tue 06-Dec-16 18:31:58

Why does it have to be 7pm gillybob? confused

Jalima Tue 06-Dec-16 18:36:13

I nearly choked on my glass of wine when I saw that, though.
Wine? Is it wine time?

durhamjen Tue 06-Dec-16 18:47:54

Any time is wine time, Jalima. Providing you have it in moderation. Heard today that Prosecco is good for you, in moderation, because of the polyphenols. Never seen those listed on the label.

Jalima Tue 06-Dec-16 18:50:47

I've had a glass already today though (out for lunch)
Just one small white which must have been metabalised a while ago.

Ana Tue 06-Dec-16 18:56:03

How much is classed as 'in moderation'?

Goodness Jalima, it only takes the body about one hour to metabolise a unit of alcohol, your small glassful would have gone ages ago! grin

Jalima Tue 06-Dec-16 18:59:08

Oh good!

gillybob Tue 06-Dec-16 19:37:10

I dunno Ana it just seems more acceptable . grin
Unless "one" is on holiday when anytime, is wine time !

gillybob Tue 06-Dec-16 19:37:49

Actually I'm only envy

eGJ Tue 06-Dec-16 20:12:41

As a Master Mariner told "the sun is over the yardarm somewhere in the world just now!" So go ahead!??

Liaise Tue 06-Dec-16 21:22:11

We have our main meal at mid day so I am usually drinking my glass of wine at 12.30. Very nice it is but now I am feeling guilty. Not for long though.

Not just for immigrants, but for all those who work for the government and all public office holders.
Can't wait for this to be quietly dropped.

Luckylegs9 Wed 21-Dec-16 04:23:37

Isn't integration, merging in with our way of life? Not changing everything so it's like the country they left? I'm sick and tired of this argument, it's too late now to turn the tide.

Luckylegs9 Wed 21-Dec-16 05:00:11

What a very weird thing to do, if it offends you look the other way. How can the cross offend anyone? What do you do when you go past a graveyard or church? Whip your camera out no doubt.

Luckylegs9 Wed 21-Dec-16 10:33:53

The last comment was a direct response to the photograph of the inside of a crematorium. Lots of people photograph post boxes and road signs, but I suppose this could catch on.

I wonder if all those using the revolving doors from government and back to banks or finance companies, the ones who set up tax dodging companies, would have to sign an oath on British values. Their values are miles away from mine.

daphnedill Wed 21-Dec-16 10:53:51

I don't usually take pictures of the view from my window, but here you are! It's the town cemetery.

I can't say that crosses offend me. I am an atheist and as far as I'm concerned they're irrelevant. I do, however, object to the extent which Christianity is imposed.

daphnedill Wed 21-Dec-16 10:56:56

The ironic thing is that those who bleat loudest about British values wouldn't like the kind of British values I'd like to impose.

I can't imagine that any serious terrorist would think twice about disobeying some oath.

It's a ridiculous idea, which would cost millions to set up and would have absolutely no effect.

durhamjen Wed 21-Dec-16 10:57:29

I suppose it was there before you were, daphne.
If you objected to crosses, you wouldn't have bought a house there.

Anniebach Wed 21-Dec-16 11:02:34

No such thing as British values , British laws yes but values? Do we not have our own values which not all share ?

Anniebach Wed 21-Dec-16 11:06:15

Daphne, as a Christian I object to atheism being imposed

If crosses are irrelevant to you why bother to take a photograph of a cemetery with those irelevent to you crosses

Granny23 Wed 21-Dec-16 13:16:50

Is'nt the whole idea of oaths redundant now? If you do not believe in a God, are not Godfearing, as in 'so help me God' then you have no fear of breaking your oath, no fear of divine retribution. You can safely swear on your Mother's life in the sure knowledge that nothing nasty will befall your Mother if you default. (OK she might be a bit disappointed in you smile).

As to values, personally I would have to add Thrift, Charity and Independence - financial and of mind - to the ones previously mentioned.
