Great tweet from FT- nails it:
So, this is how the debate reads so far. I kid you not, it’s practically verbatim:
Remainers (left holding the Brexit baby after the Leavers… left) “WTF?”
Leavers “We voted Brexit, now You Remainers need to implement it”
Remainers “But it’s not possible!”
Leavers “The People Have Spoken. Therefore it is possible. You just have to think positively.”
Remainers “And do what exactly?”
Leavers “Come up with a Plan that will leave us all better off outside the EU than in it”
Remainers “But it’s not possible!”
Leavers “Quit with the negative vibes. The People Have Spoken.”
Remainers “But even you don’t know how!”
Leavers “That’s your problem, we’ve done our bit and voted, we’re going to sit here and eat popcorn and watch as you do it.”
Remainers “Shouldn’t you do it?”
Leavers “It’s not up to us to work out the detail, it’s up to you experts.”
Remainers “I thought you’d had enough of experts”
Leavers “Remain experts.”
Remainers “There are no Leave experts”
Leavers “Then you’ll have to do it then. Oh, and by the way, no dragging your feet or complaining about it, because if you do a deal we don’t want, we’ll eat you alive.”
Remainers “But you don’t know what you want!”
Leavers “We want massive economic growth, no migration, free trade with the EU and every other country, on our terms, the revival of British industry, re-open the coal mines, tea and vicars on every village green, some bunting, and maybe restoration of the empire.”
Remainers “You’re delusional.”
Leavers “We’re a delusional majority. DEMOCRACY! So do the thing that isn’t possible, very quickly, and give all Leavers what they want, even though they don’t know what they want, and ignore the 16 million other voters who disagree. They’re tight trouser latte-sipping hipsters who whine all the time, who cares.”

The cost of Brexit for us; the ordinary people
(1001 Posts)There have been headlines over the weekend, in response to the recent polling, on the lines of "Nobody voted for Brexit in order to become poorer" (though they were good at dsmissing warnings that they would as 'scaremongering') Richard Murphy takes us through 10 reasons why he thinks it is inevitable. If anyone has an authoritative source to counter his points I'd be happy to see it.
http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2016/12/11/ten-reasons-why-brexit-is-bound-to-be-costly-for-ordinary-people/
Who said we wanted no migration, I didn't. What we don't want is the world and his wife and every othe pimp, ponce, and banjo player.
Controlled migration is absolutely fine and I don't think it's a problem for any serious minded leaver. The future of the EU is of concern though. A federal state?! European Army?!!! In twenty years, bankrupt and falling apart?! Better on the outside than getting tied up in a potentially lethal in every sense of the word maelstrom. Benign today, aggressive tomorrow in a different political world?! Opportunity knocks but once and we need to get out while we can.
you do realise that Brexit is only about immigration from Europe- you know, the ones who work in the NHS, in our fields, in our building sites with excellent qualifications, and prepared to work hard and long hours ...
not sure how many pimp, ponce or banjo players (wow what an incredible statement- if that is not racist, not sure what is
)
You forgot the rapists, don't forget the rapists (à la Trump). Merry Christmas.
No EU army planned - and UK would have a veto on that anyway. TM has said how we need to keep up with the intelligence work with EU - that is actually very important - UK has more intelligence etc but close co-operation is vital to everyone.
I heard this morning -radio4- they are warning about fishing right - need to have free trade with the EU as 66% of UK fishermen's catch is sold to EU and most of the fish we eat comes from EU! I thought part of the Brexit campaign was to get the UK fishing rights back and to be independent!! All the regulations came in because of the depletion of stocks rather than anything else.
So we have our just about guaranteed maelstrom now instead of a 'possible' one in twenty year's time?
Extraordinary how Leavers dismiss experts telling us what is most likely to happen if we leave the EU as 'speculation' to be ignored yet their speculative predictions of disaster are considered to be completely valid.
The whole thing is an utter nightmare. How on earth we got to this stage is beyond me.
Love your style petra
I hope pussy grabbers are allowed if Trump is going to meet the Queen, dj.
PS. Hope the corgis are safe.
... I am glad about the wife, though.
DH's father came on his own- then the wife followed a few months later- and the two existing children came after they had settled, found a home and jobs. I'm glad about that...
Did anyone watch 'Have I got news for you' last night.
British Humour at its best. First Nick Morgan's leather handbag in her place, since she refused to appear, last minute.
And then Gary Lineker, upsetting so many, and making all the others belly laugh:

At 65 and 70 we voted remain - so we will probably live forever, LOL.
Yes I saw it gran
I am beginning to wonder if the May government is ever going to achieve anything at all!!! I can't think of a thing she has completed. All she ever does is chortle about Brexit and take offence -I am beginning to realise that May bares a grudge over the smallest of things - "so there"
.
I couldn't believe that someone in No 10 could use such a phrase. Embarrassing understates it.
Don't worry ww she will be completing the UK leaving the EU ( so that will be something indeed, completed.)
All she ever does is chortle and take offense? Really? Is being the PM as easy as that then.
Apparently the answer to that question is yes rose she seems to do little else. May has trotted from country to country achieving nothing. There has been nothing of note to eminate from her government except to preside over the near collapse of care in the community. They are still giving out the myth that they are/will deal with immigration. Considering that they haven't a clue who is in the UK and it will take at the current rate of registration 140 years to gather the information needed I wouldn't hold your breath over that issue. The poor are getting poorer and the rich richer. The jams can wait for ever as far as I can see as there has been nothing concrete introduced to assist them, and all this without all the effect of Brexit that is around the corner.
All they can do is get miffed about the price of clothes and who said who to what, and banning people from meetings etc. It is the stuff of primary school.
Ah! But Lineker was only joking. Everybody know HIGNFY is a comedy programme. Isn't that what Farage and his Ukip cronies always claim when they say something outrageous? For goodness sake, people, lighten up and don't be so PC! ;-)
Unless May is going to remain PM for the next couple of decades (which is highly unlikely), she won't be completing the UK's exit from the EU.
All depends!
because if Corbyn stays as Leader of the opposition, then May could be in for a long stint.
Still think that it's very early to judge May ww because it's really only a matter of months since she came to power, and it must be the hardest ever job for the PM to come to for a long long time, and will take time to sort out.You could be right, and she will prove to be useless, but I think it's too early to tell.
A piece from Nick Cohen that some people will enjoy...

And, from twitter, an eyebrow raising exchange ! (Read the bottom comment first)
BarryButler @barryjbutler
I'm an ex-Tax Inspector & don't recall any EU restrictions on tax investigations from the EU.
As a #Brexit expert can you clarify....?
George English @MR_BREXIT
@Far_Right_Watch @SLATUKIP once we leave the EU we'll be able to chase these tax dodgers instead of being held by red tape. #freedomsoon
Funny that! Because I see those who voted Leave as bullies with their constant name-calling and simplistic arguments. Playground behaviour at its worse!
Well Daphne, I have called nobody names and I have tried to give constructive answers while sometimes pointing out misconceptions such as EU Directives and Regulations are approved in Parliament; the veto cannot stop anything the UK does not like; and UK exports rely heavily on trade in jam, Scotch and Harris Tweed.
I have found serious questions about the difficulties of the Eurozone and Britain's future in the EU but outside the Eurozone are largely ignored. Questions about the lack of democracy in the EU are largely brushed aside.
Here, I've here been lumped into the category of the 'gullible' and 'the lemmings' and, over on Brexit 5, I've had to defend myself against the stereotype of the Leaver as racist, bigot and knuckle-dragger. I seem to remember you even hinting that I was some kind of dark force trying to close down discussion of Brexit.
I feel very strongly that many from Remain and Leave have shared values despite taking a different view on whether we should be in or out of the EU. I see that among my family and friends. I would like to have more constructive discussion but I am getting rather disillusioned about finding it on Gransnet.
Of course, I meant to say [above] that it is a misconception that the veto can stop anything the UK doesn't like.
Hear hear Cunco
At least ' pussy grabbing' Trump wasn't abusing the hospitality of a host country, unlike the hundreds of asylum seekers who savagely attacked over a thousand women in Cologne last New Year's Eve.
petra don't you think that your language is a tad florid??
No, better to say it as Trump said it so that we know what kind of man he is; it took me a while to work out what it meant as the press referred to it as p****.
Let's hope we don't have any repeats of the incidents in Europe this New Year.
