Melania and equality

Certain pictures and 'stories' about Donald and Melania Trump are appearing repeatedly on Twitter. It's interesting to compare interpretations.

This one, where Donald gets out of the limo and goes up the steps to meet the Obamas while Melania gets out of the far side of the vehicle and walks up by herself has provoked a lot of discussion reaction.

The most common interpretation is that Donald is a boor/ungentlemanly for not waiting for Melania and walking up the steps with her. I suspect this is based on the premise that he's a boor anyway and, besides, people hate him.

Another interpretation is that he is more of a gender egalitarian than we think because he was behaving just as he would have done if Melania were a man.

The latter interpretation made me wonder if Theresa May 'waits for' Philip May in similar circumstances or whether he just 'follows' in due course?

I saw these two clips earlier and wondered if the way they get out of the car and walk up the steps could be a security issue.

There are security men between Trump and Melania as though they wanted to keep a distance between them. The security men are standing further back in the Obama clip.

These things are carefully orchestrated so I don't think we should read too much into it.

Strange that speaking seven languages equates with not being brow beaten haha
It's not a knock DT he does that beautifully himself every time he opens his mouth
How anyone can defend a man who has just about every ugly 'ism' coming out of his soulless body every time he Speaks I will never understand

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 17:33:10

I keep reading she speaks five languages, Bluebelle. Is that what happens when your husband becomes president?

America is no longer a full democracy.

Democracy Index 2016

According to the 2016 Democracy Index almost one-half of the world’s countries can be considered to be democracies of some sort, but the number of “full democracies” has declined from 20 in 2015 to 19 in 2016. The US has been downgraded from a “full democracy” to a “flawed democracy” because of a further erosion of trust in government and elected officials there.

The "democratic recession" worsened in 2016, when no region experienced an improvement in its average score and almost twice as many countries (72) recorded a decline in their total score as recorded an improvement (38). Eastern Europe experienced the most severe regression. The 2016 Democracy Index report, Revenge of the "deplorables", examines the deep roots of today's crisis of democracy in the developed world, and looks at how democracy fared in every region

Wasn't Trump elected on fighting corruption?

For anyone on twitter.

I commented on the remark made by handmadedogsweaters
I think Michelle Ob-bomba is very jealous of Melinia as she is beautiful and womanly looking and unlike her does not look manish
Perhaps Melania is intelligent and compassionate, I really don't yet know, I do know Michelle is. My remarks were about how women are still judged, not about their individual characters.
As for the 'plastic beauty' I would use that for anyone whose looks were so obviously heavily dependant on make up and other assistance. So if I was assessing them on beauty I would regard Michelle as the most attractive, but I would prefer to use different standards for women.

MaizieD Fri 27-Jan-17 18:27:09

Why - what's in it? As you must have read it cover to cover then to know, perhaps you'll enlighten us MaizieD?

Because the Daily Mail devotes a huge amount of space to bitching about female celebrities. Particularly their weight gain, outfits etc.

I occasionally read their articles on line. The right hand sidebar of bitching goes on for ever.

So I thought it would be a bit hypocritical of DM readers to be criticising similar 'bitching' on Gransnet..

Just because someone defends Melania Trump against some of the sheer nastiness that is on social media does not mean they like or support her husband.

Barmyoldbat Fri 27-Jan-17 18:39:56

To be honest I couldn't care less about the Trumps, as far as I am conerned he has no respect for women and is a complete idiot and the rest of the family I just don't want to know. There are far more things in the world to worry about than the Trumps personalities.

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 18:41:37

Do you think that Michelle Obama does not use makeup or a hairdresser then trisher?
Of course she does!
And neither of them look plastic

Contrast them both with people who have had more plastic surgery than they should have - I won't post a picture but I am there are many on the internet. They are both lovely women.

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 18:42:53

I'm not worried about Melania's personality but I am a tad concerned about Donald's shock

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 18:43:01

It's not his personality I worry about, but his lack of grasp on important things.
America isn't just a business.
Giving countries a contract with a thirty day opt out? What's that about?

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 18:45:12

Jalima, did you see handmade's comment on Michelle Obama?
She obviously doesn't think so.

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 18:45:21

I occasionally read their articles on line. The right hand sidebar of bitching goes on for ever.
grin

I have never looked at the right hand side even if I occasionally look at an article in the online DM.
Why would anyone if they don't like that kind of thing? confused

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 18:47:01

It is his personality too though, the vengeful tweeting for years if anyone thwarts him.
Is that normal?

Ana Fri 27-Jan-17 18:47:51

Quite, Jalima. Especially if it goes on 'for ever'.

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 18:48:10

handmade
confused what's that?

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 19:50:02

Trump's latest u-turn.
100% behind Nato.

politicalscrapbook.net/2017/01/trump-wants-a-trade-deal-with-the-uk-that-he-can-cancel-in-30-days-what-a-joke/

Do we want a trade agreement with him that can be cancelled in thirty days?
It's lucky that we have two years still in the EU to sort things out.

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 20:22:51

well, let's hope there are a few more
(U turns)
Perhaps Theresa has made him see some sense

We are straying from the OP - any pictures of him holding the door open for Mrs May?

rosesarered Fri 27-Jan-17 20:25:59

He ushered her off the podium before him at the press conference.

trisher Fri 27-Jan-17 21:42:21

Take a closer look at Melania Jalima, notice the lack of wrinkles and the unmoving forehead, signs of botox of course. Michelle has wrinkles, of course she may just have better treatment but I think Trump would pay for the best. There is also the amount of make up- too much looks plastic. I didn't say either of them weren't attractive, just commented on the quality of the look. Interesting that once again you are concerned with the appearance and not the qualities and character of the women.

Anniebach Fri 27-Jan-17 21:54:40

I do think the present Mrs Trump looks rather plastic, as do many american politicians wives

thatbags Fri 27-Jan-17 22:12:19

Melania Trump is only 46 and probsbly a healthy woman. Of course she doesn't have many wrinkles. Flip! I don't have many wrinkles (not on my face anyhow; there are plenty elsewhere; I especially like my hand wrinkles) and I'm 61. Not that there's anything wrong with wrinkles and I'm sure we will both have plenty in due course.

Get off your plastic horse, trisher.
