Melania and equality

Certain pictures and 'stories' about Donald and Melania Trump are appearing repeatedly on Twitter. It's interesting to compare interpretations.

This one, where Donald gets out of the limo and goes up the steps to meet the Obamas while Melania gets out of the far side of the vehicle and walks up by herself has provoked a lot of discussion reaction.

The most common interpretation is that Donald is a boor/ungentlemanly for not waiting for Melania and walking up the steps with her. I suspect this is based on the premise that he's a boor anyway and, besides, people hate him.

Another interpretation is that he is more of a gender egalitarian than we think because he was behaving just as he would have done if Melania were a man.

The latter interpretation made me wonder if Theresa May 'waits for' Philip May in similar circumstances or whether he just 'follows' in due course?

Yorkshiregel I take it you hadn't read SueDoku's post when you posted your admiration of Trump?

suzied Fri 27-Jan-17 13:25:28

You could also add he said "torture works" and he would allow it.

rosesarered Fri 27-Jan-17 13:30:04

He also said that he had taken advice ( on torture) and would not be allowing it.
you could say ( above list) that he has started doing many of the things that he campaigned on, and is pleasing the 63 million or so people who voted for him ( whatever we think.)

Regarding Trump and Melania and him leaving her to get out of the car, maybe this is an indication of where their relationship is. You know, in the early days he helps you out the car, holds your hand when he introduces you to his friends and family and is generally protective; then he starts leaving you to get out by yourself and later still to carry the bags as well; eventually of course, if it lasts long enough, you finish up helping each other out of the car depending on whose knees/back/feet are the worst at the time. Donald and Melania have reached stage 2 quite early on, does this mean they won't get to stage 3? And anyway if they do we can guess who will need helping out the car first!

Wikileaks have said that anyone who has posted research on climate change online can send copies to them, just in case he tries to get rid of all online information.
That should be worrying to everyone.

* On January 24th, 2017, it was discovered that police officers had used confiscated cell phones to search the emails and messages of the 230 demonstrators now facing felony riot charges for protesting on January 20th, including lawyers and journalists whose email accounts contain privileged information of clients and sources.

Did you read this, roses?
Do you think that is acceptable in a democracy?

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 14:11:49

Has Trump said he will not be allowing torture, roses?
He hadn't when May got on that plane.

rosesarered Fri 27-Jan-17 14:15:03

If it is not against the laws of the land to do so ( and I have no idea if it is, or isn't in the US.)
Presumably they were checking that their was no danger/ worry of attack or assasination to the President.

rosesarered Fri 27-Jan-17 14:18:31

I watched Trump on tv say that he was ok with water boarding and torture if necessary, but has taken advice from his military and that it wouldn't be used.
A clever move, as it allowed him to say ( to followers) that he was ok with it, but please others, that he wouldn't do it.

rosesarered Fri 27-Jan-17 14:19:58

My first post was about confiscated phones.

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 14:28:40

When was that, roses? I have news24 on at the moment and they are still worried about the fact that Trump might still use torture.

Legs55 Fri 27-Jan-17 14:32:47

I'm ignoring all this coverage as a) I'm not interested b) I'm only interested in the more serious "news" that is important to both this Country & World. We're stuck with Trump for 4 years short of Assassination or Indictment for some "offence". Don't read "Celeb magazines" eithergrin

BRedhead59 Fri 27-Jan-17 14:38:22

I think he's probably horrid in most respects but he's an easy target for internet
bullying in particular photos of the Obama's smiling and he and Melania scowling - easy to manipulate.

BRedhead59 Fri 27-Jan-17 14:40:12

I'm as against torture as millions of others but I don't think we should take the high moral ground when it is clear out secret service have also been involved - not on UK soil but in planes and other countries for sure.

Yorkshiregel Fri 27-Jan-17 14:55:53

I honestly believe that all this talk about using torture is bluff and saying what his followers want him to say. I do not think he would allow it and I don't think he means it. I think he just wants to say he would so that terrorists would not be sure what he would do. That is called talking tough. I do not think all this rubbish about getting rid of all Muslims in the USA is about to happen either. They are just threats without substance. Only time will tell.

durhamjen Fri 27-Jan-17 15:52:15

Everybody thought the idea of a wall between the US and Mexico was bluff.
What do you think Guantanamo Bay is all about?

He's not banning Saudi Muslims, even though 15 of the 19 involved in the attack on the World Trade Centre were Saudi citizens. I find it very worrying that he is not consistent in his policies.

handmadedogsweaters Fri 27-Jan-17 16:13:52

If Donald trump carries out his promises he will be the first president to do so.I think Michelle Ob-bomba is very jealous of Melinia as she is beautiful and womanly looking and unlike her does not look manish. GO THE TRUMPS.

I just hope that none of you who are objecting to comments about Melania Trump read the Daily Mail.

Why - what's in it? As you must have read it cover to cover then to know, perhaps you'll enlighten us MaizieD?

Ana Fri 27-Jan-17 16:25:55

I wonder why it's always the Daily Mail the comes in for criticism on GN? It's never The Sun or The Express for example!

trisher Fri 27-Jan-17 16:28:37

hmds GO THE TRUMPS indeed- just wish I was able to choose where.
Nice to see the usual prejudices and outdated standards for assessing women are still alive and kicking on GN. Intelligence and compassion count for nothing, plastic manufactured beauty is what matters.

Ana Fri 27-Jan-17 16:30:59

Are you saying that Melania is neither intelligent nor compassionate trisher? shock

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 16:34:15

So, can I get this clear?

Theresa May has been constantly criticised for not being clearer about her plans for Brexit
Donald Trump has immediately put into action promises made during his election campaign and is criticised for it.
Michelle was criticised for her speeches, for 'hanging on to the coat tails of the President and not working' (on a thread not long ago)
Melania is being criticised for what she is wearing, who she married, where she lives, whatever she does or does not do. Presumably, with a husband who is so busy, it is better for her to stay where she is pro tem and where her DP can help out with her son.

None of them can win whatever they do.

Jalima Fri 27-Jan-17 16:40:39

trisher
re the three stages - I don't remember the first one at all!! Certainly, if it happened, it didn't last for 12 years!!
but DH does carry the shopping bags in now!

I can't really agree there trisher

I admired Michelle Obama and in fact thought she was very beautiful as well as intelligent and compassionate.

However, I, like most people, know very little about Melania Trump and I think many of the criticisms of her have been very uncalled for. She has been First Lady for only a few days - who knows what programmes she may become involved with? Why does her intelligence count for nothing? And why is it expected of a First Lady anyway? They did not get elected, their husbands did.

Plastic manufactured beauty - that is the kind of remark which will make people defend her because it really is unpleasant.
