The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

In fact, it wasn't very stable in biblical times, was it?

nigglynellie Sun 29-Jan-17 15:45:00

Sophisticated weapons have made it much worse, at least no aerial bombing in biblical times or in 1916, no cruise missiles either!

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 15:53:40

Cruise missiles, eh? The ones that are up in Scotland, waiting to go off in any direct ion they want to?

Trump has said that they should have taken the oil, and that would have prevented Isis. I remember seeing a programme about the middle east saying that the reason many villages disappeared in biblical times was because of fires being lit over the top of oil sinks. They didn't understand what was happening then, having no use for or understanding of oil.

Sir Mo Farah is someone who is proud to be British and most British people are very proud of him. He is a world class athlete and like so many world class athletes needs to train where there are world class facilities - that, unfortunately, means the USA.

It is disgraceful that Trump, on the pretext of protecting Americans, can ban world class athletes, refugees, business people, green card holders who have lived in the US for many years, and even a British Conservative MP, because they were born in countries on his list- Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen.

During the 40 years from 1975 - 2015 not a single American was killed on American soil by a national from any of these countries. However more than 3000 Americans were killed by terrorists from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and other countries whose nationals have not been banned.

Why? - because Trump and his family own companies in these countries, that's why. What would it take to have this appalling person, this disgrace to the USA impeached??

Rinouchka I hadn't picked up on the suggestion of internment shock.

All the best to you and your family flowers

Muslims defending America:

As they had done during the Civil War, Muslim Americans fought and died in World War II and Vietnam. Over 15,000 Arab Americans, some of whom were Muslim, fought for the U.S. in North Africa, Europe and Asia during the second World War. Historian Edward E. Curtis states that at least twelve Muslim Americans sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War. Curtis adds that these Muslim soldiers “held military grades from private first class to sergeant.” These facts highlight that Muslims have been involved in the preeminent patriotic struggles of America in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries

Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to the president, also pushed back on critics of Mr. Trump’s swift issuance of executive actions.

“Get used to it,” Conway tweeted Saturday, promising that “he’s just getting started.”

and he's tweeting:

Just read a post from an Iranian who has lived and worked in the USA for 7 years. He went on holiday a week ago to visit his family. When he tried to return home he was escorted from the plane bond for Washington. He is worried about his dog, his job, his house, his car (which is in the airport car park). This is just an ordinary man.

I'm incandescent with rage angry

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 16:20:56

Presumably someone with a proper in date visa Anya?
shock

Well, we are fairly impotent but there will be a lot of Americans in powerful positions who can do something about him.

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 16:21:11

by him I mean DT

Rinouchka Sun 29-Jan-17 16:32:11

Thank you ffinocchio.
Anya, the case you mention is not the only one.

Even with a green card ( which gives you permanent residence) an important job which contributes greatly to the well-being of Americans and a blameless past, you may not be safe in the US if you happen to have been born in countries DT does not like or are actually ( or are perceived to be-- remember queries re Obama's religion and birth) Muslim.

Am heartened by the American and international response to the latest executive order.

J52 Sun 29-Jan-17 16:50:52

I think there could be many difficulties with a state visit from DT, especially as he is currently banning British Citizens because of their beliefs.

I fear for where it will end.

rosesarered Sun 29-Jan-17 16:55:48

It is supposed to end in 90 days.

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 16:56:01

This is worrying as well.

J52 Sun 29-Jan-17 17:03:52

If it does end in 90 days, the damage will already be done.

Then what after 90 days? I doubt if everything will go back to as it was before. It would be interesting to know the contortions that the detainees are being held in. Are there impartial inspectors?

J52 Sun 29-Jan-17 17:05:39

* Conditions! Although 'contortions' maybe an I pad Freudian slip up!

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 17:47:22

For Syrians it's indefinite. It depends on where they are held, J52. For Guantanamo contortions might be the right word. You've got a clever ipad. I hope it doesn't really forecast the future.

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 17:50:55

He's changed his mind already on green card holders. Now if only someone could make him change his mind on the rest.....we can all forget it happened.

Anya Sun 29-Jan-17 17:55:09

Good about green card holders. The man's a moron, like his supporters, he hasn't a clue.

Anya Sun 29-Jan-17 17:55:46

He's starting to look like the fool he is.

Good article here by Matthew Norman. The biggest danger to America is Donald Trump, not refugees.

Anya Sun 29-Jan-17 18:32:57

Apparently Egypt and Saudi Arabia are not included in the ban as Trump has business dealings there!

whitewave Sun 29-Jan-17 18:33:55

And Turkey!!

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 19:12:34

Another scary article.

Apparently Orwell's 1984 has shot up the best seller lists. Brave New World is selling well, too.
