The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

BBC news says a US judge has issued a temporary halt to the deportation of visa holders or refugees stranded at airports after President Donald Trump issued an order barring entry to them for 90 days.

I think the best way to show how we feel about Trump is to absolutely not go anywhere near him when he comes to London. Demonstrate our feelings via an empty mall and deserted streets. Boycott him completely.
The Queen will handle him with style and grace. Prince Philip -not so much.

I agree Jane10, if thousands of protestors turned up he would tweet thousands greeted him.

The Queen has met so many Heads of State in her long reign, some good some really dreadful like the odious Ceausecu's, so I'm sure she'll manage a Trump visit with her usual diplomatic skill. I can't really imagine what Theresa May is supposed to say without making a bad situation worse. A lot of people were very put out and angry at Obama's perceived interference in UK domestic affairs over the referendum, even tipping the scales (adversely for the government) for some. So, I suppose except where it adversely affects British subjects, we have o keep out of America domestic affairs.

Don't sneer at people reading Tom Nicholls, dj. The lawyers can use law but not all Americans are lawyers. Reading Tom Nicholls gives guidance to ordinary citizens on how to make their opinions known, and how to point out illegality where things are not legal and use their protests where things ARE legal. In short, too use their brains as well as their emotional response.

thatbags Sun 29-Jan-17 14:04:33

Tom Nichols is oerfectly aware that lawyers are opposing the EOs, dj. He is not giving the information for lawyers who know what to do already. His information is for laypeople and is telling them what they can do to oppose the EOs.

This being so, I'm just wondering what your "fortunately" is about.

Given your own claims to activism, your post aint half weird.

I am finding the reaction to Trumps actions so uplifting. It shows that the world has not gone completely mad.

Rinouchka Sun 29-Jan-17 14:09:19

Yes, US District Court Judge Ann M Donnelly issued an immediate emergency stay and the American Civil Liberties Union is on the case. I am very reassured about this immediate reaction re this facile attempt by DT to address a complex issue.

But now the concern is for the people who are being held and what will happen to them. Even with a stay on the executive order, internment has been proposed and this is not a pleasant option.

Another concern for us as a family is that our SiL2, an eminent young surgeon from the Middle East working in NYC with a green card, a British-American wife, American babies, and a Christian ( but with an Arabic surname and French first name, confusingly) will not be free to travel in and out of the US, despite all his credentials.

Immigration officials are not always the sharpest regarding differentiation between geographical areas, religions, origins of names, etc. This will affect them if they visit us, or his own family, or if he attends one of the many medical conferences at which he is invited to speak.

Just want to stress that this affects real people and so we must react accordingly.

Yemen shock hope Trump is too busy banning everyone to give this much attention.

Sir Mo Farah has posted this...

On 1st January this year, Her Majesty The Queen made me a Knight of the Realm. On 27th January, President Donald Trump seems to have made me an alien.

I am a British citizen who has lived in America for the past six years - working hard, contributing to society, paying my taxes and bringing up our four children in the place they now call home. Now, me and many others like me are being told that we may not be welcome. It’s deeply troubling that I will have to tell my children that Daddy might not be able to come home - to explain why the President has introduced a policy that comes from a place of ignorance and prejudice.

I was welcomed into Britain from Somalia at eight years old and given the chance to succeed and realise my dreams. I have been proud to represent my country, win medals for the British people and receive the greatest honour of a knighthood. My story is an example of what can happen when you follow polices of compassion and understanding, not hate and isolation.

Anya Sun 29-Jan-17 14:28:58

Then bring it on WW ????

whitewave Sun 29-Jan-17 14:29:25

Makes you want to weep doesn't it?

If Mo Farah is so proud to be British why does he live in America? Am puzzled.

whitewave Sun 29-Jan-17 14:42:23

Just watching peston

Those countries in which Trump has business interests are not on the banned list shock

whitewave Sun 29-Jan-17 14:43:21

Training. Happens with athletes loads of times.

durhamjen Sun 29-Jan-17 14:54:21

If Trump and Putin between them are going to get rid of IS in thirty days, then there was no need for all this, was there?
They must know who and where they all are.

nigglynellie Sun 29-Jan-17 14:56:18

I think we need to remember who it was who destabalised the Middle East in the first place! One Mr Bush/Mr Blair!!! Their silence is deafening, particularly clever clogs Blair!!!

Thank you Mo and if America (Trump) doesn't want you we would love you to come back here any time.

Jalima Sun 29-Jan-17 15:02:48

If I were the Queen, I would plead a bad cold after Trump arrives so he has to be greeted by Charles.

He could well refuse, so they would have to go down the line until they find someone who would greet him.

Or just leave him to the Duke of Edinburgh who is not known for mincing his words?

Badenkate Sun 29-Jan-17 15:05:45

I taught English as a second language to children in state schools in Dorset for a time, and one boy that I taught was 15 and Somali. I asked him how he liked it in England, and he beamed at me and told me that he liked it very much. I asked him why he liked it and I've never forgotten his answer. He said 'I can go out of my house and not be frightened of being killed.'

Mamie Sun 29-Jan-17 15:06:39

I think you need to go back a bit further than Bush and Blair to look at who "destabilized the Middle East in the first place" Nigglynellie. Sykes Picot and 1916 might be a more relevant starting point.
