The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 17:49:22

Durham "Trump stopped all muslims from seven countries coming to USA because of 9/11, but he did not stop those from the main country, Saudi Arabia."

According to the Global Terrorism Index the main countries are Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, India, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Thailand. That's just the first 10 and there are 50 on the list.

Another thought, Jalima; how many of them are related to her?
I counted about ten on the list of however many on the long page.

Penstemmon Mon 30-Jan-17 17:52:00

Isn't that a list that suffers from attacks rather than perpertrated them in other non Muslim countries? confused

Do calm down and stop shouting, very infra dig on a forum djen
I don't have to justify anything, but the Trump administration say the countries are on Obamas list given by intelligence services and they are using that.Because the main culprits from 9.11 were from Saudi doesn't mean attacks will have to come from Saudis now so are using this same list of identified ( as a danger to the US) countries. Not my words btw.

5 posts in between my writing that.

Obama did not stop any Iraqis from entering the USA. What he did was to reassess the visa applications for all those Iraqis already in the country and then require the same more intensive investigation of those Iraqis applying for new visas. This led to a significant slow down of Iraqis entering the country until this was completed. Another example of 'alternative facts' from pro Trump sources. For more information this is the Washington Post - I hope a suitably sensible source

More countries may be added, as and when.

Jalima Mon 30-Jan-17 17:56:55

djen President Obama first visited on 31st March 2009 after his inauguration on 20th January 2009.
President Obama attended the G-20 summit meeting. Obama met with Prime Minister Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street, where he took part in a joint press conference with Brown, and met with Leader of the Opposition David Cameron at the U.S. Embassy in Grosvenor Square. Obama also met with Queen Elizabeth I

So she welcomed him privately but it was perhaps an informal visit.

How long do these things take to arrange?

Anniebach Mon 30-Jan-17 17:57:33

Now I have to defend queenie, she did not openly critcise the Chinese delegation, she spoke to someone at s garden party sbout one Chinese and the conversation was picked up and relayed to the country. Giving her age I think it incredible this was the first time we have heard her make a personal comment

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 17:57:49

^Trump hasn’t even stopped the right Muslims, those from Saudi Arabia ^" Really durham? Wow. hmm

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 17:58:32

Yes, a very significant slowdown I bet.....a trickle? None?

Ana Mon 30-Jan-17 17:59:09

And why the hell does it matter who or who is not related to the Queen? Jalima, I'm surprised you fell for that.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 17:59:41

djen either has a crystal ball or is in tight with CIA sources.

Jalima Mon 30-Jan-17 17:59:57

That should read Queen Elizabeth II grin
copied and missed a I

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 18:00:40

Hemmings, maybe so penstemon I should have checked that properly. I'll go away and check.

Chewbacca Mon 30-Jan-17 18:01:04

Hmmmm, not Hemmings!

Jalima Mon 30-Jan-17 18:01:29

Ana just trying to be helpful as djen didn't seem to know.

Of course, we are all related, all out of Africa so Mugabe could be a cousin 5,000 times removed.
But still a cousin of The Queen.
And of us all.

Badenkate Mon 30-Jan-17 18:05:10

Rosesarered to save you having to read the article I gave you the link to, and to state facts rather than guesses:

State Department records show there was a significant drop in refugee arrivals from Iraq in 2011. There were 18,251 in 2010, 6,339 in 2011 and 16,369 in 2012.

A large drop over the year, but scarcely a trickle.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 18:08:33

......but how many in the six months that's the thing.
I have to be really, really interested to read the links on Gransnet, as there are hundreds of the things, and I have a busy life.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 18:10:43

It will be guesswork for you too Baden if you can't find figures for the actual six months ban.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 18:14:58

Even if the six month ban was not an actual ban, it acted as one as only 6,339 were admitted over that whole year as opposed to 18,251.The year before.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 18:16:30

Moving on to the present ban, it is temporary, and that alone is something!

Badenkate Mon 30-Jan-17 18:22:07

Rosesarered, I do understand that you don't want to read all the links, but please read the posts. I said there was never a ban in place as there is at the moment. At no time did Obama state that he was banning Iraqis - you may argue, as I'm sure you will, that what he did to all intents and purposes amounted to a ban - but the fact remains that it was described as re-checking and intensifying checks. This is actually an important point, as Trump is attempting to justify his actions by equating them to something which is not factually true.

nigglynellie Mon 30-Jan-17 18:29:05

Protecting or pretending to protect the Queen from this state visit is absurd. If she can shake hands and converse with Martin Maguiness (spelling) and he with her, bearing in mind one of her close relations was murdered by the IRA, an organisation M.M was closely involved with, then I don't think D T will hold too many terrors for her!! So to hide behind this pretence is just rubbish!!
