I've just heard that the Speaker Mr Bercow wants to ban Donald Trump from speaking in the House. Whilst not in agreement with most of the Donald 's ideas I do believe in the freedom of speech. What do others think ?

It's obviously suspect to have a good memory on here, roses...hmm

I didn't say I had such a hard time. I said I was angry. I said it to show I could empathise with those people in I, Daniel Blake.
Unlike some others on here.

I was on benefits, it is demeaning , but questions have to be asked. And so much pressure on staff now.

MawBroon Tue 14-Feb-17 23:11:01

To be fair Ana and roses there was a case of someone who "had a little list" in the past so it is not unknown.
Some of us do have a good memory for inconsequential details (which can come in handy in pub quizzes) others can't remember where they parked the car at the supermarket do not.

durhamjen you have no idea how hard some of us have had it.

Not everyone has to say that they empathise with the likes of Daniel Blake or why.

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 23:23:20

Yes indeed Mawbroon, I do remember that there was someone who kept a notebook of members' details in the dim and distant past...

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 23:24:44

I didn't know you could get benefits if you resigned from a job.
Something that could have been useful to us years ago.

durhamjen Tue 14-Feb-17 23:30:17

Talking about thirty years ago, Jalima, when we moved from Hampshire to Yorkshire. I had been working as a teacher and paying tax and full NI for years. I was looking for work, which is what you get JSA for, although it wasn't called JSA then.

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 23:32:06

Yes, I was thinking of about 30 years ago

Too late now!

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 23:32:28

So?

durhamjen Tue 14-Feb-17 23:32:46

I bet they will have lost your records!

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 23:35:01

You didn't get them in the past ( I needed them briefly 40 odd years ago) but because I had given up my job to move somewhere else, a man from the job centre or whatever it was called in those days, came out to interview me where I lived ( strange!) and said that I couldn't 'sign on' and that my MIL wouldn't let me starve ( he said that with a little smile at his own wit) grin I got a new job as quickly as I could so it was alright, but I was willing to do any old job.It was in a library, and very nice as it turned out.

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 23:35:31

You got unemployment benefit, but not immediately if you'd resigned from your job. I think you probably had to wait 6 months, don't know the prcedure now.

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 23:38:50

That sounds about right Ana although if you move somewhere else, you have to give up your job, no choice.Oh, it was called the labour exchange wasn't it, then became the job centre.Nobody wanted to be on the dole.

durhamjen Thu 16-Feb-17 00:09:23

Well thirty years ago I got it after I had put in an objection to having it refused.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/feb/16/john-bercow-backed-by-mps-across-commons

The EDM to ask for him to be removed still just has one signature.

durhamjen Tue 21-Feb-17 00:07:10

The EDM now has five signatures so I think we can take it that it's a damp squib and Bercow is staying.
