Has his halo slipped?

Is he really just the same as some of those other overpaid, rich celebrities who "do charity" on one hand and then take it directly away with the other by not paying his fair share of taxes?

I always thought that DB was one of the good guys and I am truly disappointed with what I have learned in the last few days.

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 22:06:08

But isn't that down to the writer, rather than the director?

What use is a director without anything to direct?

Rigby46 Tue 14-Feb-17 22:17:50

<sigh> have you any idea at all about how many people see a film as opposed to how many would read the book it is based on? And have you any idea at all about the huge difference a particular director makes to a film? Have you never seen two versions of the same book filmed by two different directors and seen what a huge difference that makes? And as for roses comment that Loach didn't write the books his films were based on? Seriously? Honestly, in order to criticise someone who is one of our greatest film directors, but is left wing, you are willing to demonstrate such a complete lack of understanding of the role of a director?

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 22:31:01

Yet he didn't win best director or best film. he won best British film but how many are made in a year. He has never won on Oscar , so yes a good director but not world class.

The writer is so important because there is the birth of the film . Think,of the films which would never been made if there had been no book or script. Passage to India, To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Birds, the list is endless and most started with the writer

So no lack of understanding from Rosesarered,

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 22:35:43

I agree, Annie.

I, Daniel Blake, wasn't based on a book. The script was written by Paul Laverty, and although I do appreciate that a director's work is significant the film isn't just 'Ken Loach's.

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 22:41:22

No, he didn't write the books, he did bring them to a wider audience it's true, But the actual writing ( and the message) was actually the property of the author.
I am not criticising any film director ( I would not call Loach one of our greatest btw)
But this thread is not about him, and I can't understand why we are still talking about him....except to say he is not a hero ( which I believe is what started this ).
'A rich young man feels cheated' you say trisher and here we have the nub, because he is a rich young man ergo he shouldn't feel cheated or upset that his emails were hacked! If he was a poor young man, perhaps he would get sympathy ?

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 22:41:36

Ana, I so enjoyed David Lean films , with the exception of Dr Zhivargo, all that snow ! But they came from books which had been read almost world wide, without those books no great films

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 22:43:22

Most posts which critcise Beckham have his money brought into it

Rigby46 Tue 14-Feb-17 22:49:56

Do you really think AB he isn't one of our greatest film directors? Who do you think is? And of course you need a book/script to make a film but obviously you need a director and I've seen some great books completely mangled by poor directors and insubstantial books made great by a talented script writer and director. I can't imagine for one minute why roses made the point that KL hadn't written the films he directed unless she really didn't understand that that is the norm. Is your real problem with KL that he is a JC supporter and so you can't see beyond that to give him the credit for a life time's work that has included some amazing films?

mrsmopp Tue 14-Feb-17 22:57:12

Why has this thread been diverted to a discussion on film directors? It's off topic. We are discussing David Beckham, or so I thought...

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 23:00:13

Because threads do,

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 23:00:39

perhaps Ken Loach is going to make a film about David Beckham mrsmopp - the rags to riches story of a footballer perhaps. wink

'Golden Balls' - who will write the theme music?

Rigby46 Tue 14-Feb-17 23:07:45

Well I blame trisher and anniebach (in as much of course that anyone should really be blamed at all for a thread bring diverted). And anyway, talking about KL was way more interesting than DB

Anniebach Tue 14-Feb-17 23:10:34

And talking of Dsvid Lean was fsr more interesting than talking of Loach

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 23:11:53

Jalima, that's a wonderful idea! I'll start writing the book this very moment...

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 23:13:42

(or if it's got to be Ken Loach, perhaps just a sketchy script would do?)

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 23:14:30

...and Rigby could direct the film

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 23:15:05

Who would play David Beckham?

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 23:17:04

Brooklyn? or Romeo? Cruz? one after the other as he grows up
Keep it in the family!

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 23:17:45

My DH has just offered ( dear kind soul) but as he is double the age, then we must cast around for a younger man.

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 23:20:18

Sorry Ana the book is already written!

Victoria is turning it into a script as we speak.

Ken was busy in Bath today campaigning against the proposed move of the Central Library, but he said he'll be ready to start filming when he gets the nod.

Jalima Tue 14-Feb-17 23:21:35

I would volunteer DS but he doesn't have the necessary tattoos

mrsmopp Tue 14-Feb-17 23:22:44

David Be khan could play David Beckham. He looks just like him.
Is an Oscar worth more than a knighthood?

mrsmopp Tue 14-Feb-17 23:23:45

Beckham!

rosesarered Tue 14-Feb-17 23:24:58

David Be Khan? Would the fact that he is Asian make any difference?

Ana Tue 14-Feb-17 23:25:48

I think he might be rather 'wooden' as an actor...
