Living with the Trump presidency

I've heard bits - but was there anything actually definitive?...

I didn't watch it and was out and didn't see the morning news either, maybe might at noon.

Last evening I read a shorter version of this in the Little I about George W ... but it's on the Sky news link. Here's part of it. The last sentence made me look twice when he said... people like me.

The former Republican president also waded into the controversy surrounding Mr Trump's criticism of the media, saying he didn't agree with Mr Trump's characterisation of the media as the 'enemy of the people. I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy... we need an independent media to hold people like me to account.

On another news link at the New York Times there is photo of Bush working on his portraits of veterans, some wounded, that he has come to know. Interesting.

Which bit of everything? People are not going to suddenly believe that his personality is completely different just because he has been showing his charming face.

He definitely did NOT write that speech... the analogies and metaphors were so unTrump-like. But he did deliver it properly. It was appalling that Ivanka sat with the grieving weeping widow in a off-shoulder cocktail dress while smiling a 1000watt smile. She loves the camera.

No of course he didn't write it. He or his coterie including Bannon are trying to play a clever game. Well it will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Suffragette colours are purple, green and white. White is for virgins.

Retired CIA head on radio this morning, saying that in his opinion there ought to be an independent look at what contact there has been between the trumpty rabble and the Russians and to establsih exactly what the Russians did to interfere with the election results.

If there is a proven case then the whole caboodle will be seen as null and void.

I have mixed feelings about the link at 23.00 hours. Very mixed.
My first reaction on reading it was, wow, well done.
But the more I read it the more uncomfomfortable in the main I became.
Perhaps it is not written as well as it could be, but in real life, in a subway for example, maybe not well lit, later in the evening, not many others around etc or even if there was, telling someone some of those things in New York or Chicago or whereever, might just get you knifed if you were to intervene in that way?

Obviously totally different hopefully, if you were in an office senario or at home? But even so, I think the article should have been written with that in mind too. In my opinion.

durhamjen This is spot on as a description of the Trumperies we have been subjected to. Listening to him speak just makes me cringe. I used to feel this about our own politicians here in NI but during this last election they sound like slick politicians compared with Trump!

I can't remember where I read this recently (might even have been on here) but there is a theory that Trump's speeches are cleverly designed, however chaotic they may seem to an outsider. They are targeted at his supporters, who will pick up on the bits they agree with which reinforce their views and ignore the rest. The speeches are really just a series of disconnected soundbites/slogans.

I'm not sure I believe this! It sounds too clever...

"For evil to triumph, it is necessary only that good people do nothing", and the link at 23.00 is to a good initiative for learning a few strategies for cooling the situation without being confrontational and making it worse.

If a whole crowd of bystanders do nothing, they are colluding with the abuse. It is just possible that the man was not aware of how nasty he was being, and he will learn something, at the very least he might learn that his behaviour is unacceptable, and maybe even change his inner opinions as a result.

And a side effect would be that the person being abused would feel that the majority of the population don't think as that one loudmouth does, so they might not be so alienated that they join a genuinely "anti-American" organisation and escalate into terrorism. They won't feel "If you won't stand up for me, you are all against me"

maizie I think there is almost certainly an element of truth it what you say about trumpty dumptys speeches. Bannon is behind a lot of what he says, but of course it is clear that he also goes off piste on his rants, especially ially on twitter. It's like reading the tweets of a cross teenager.

MaizieD That is perfectly possible. A clever scriptwriter, like a good playwright or novellist, can use words to induce whatever mood they want in the listener or viewer.

The choice of a word is never completely random - for instance, an obvious choice of "rabble" or "mob" is far more likely to rouse fear and anger than "crowd".

I see your point Elegran, but just as with a domestic dispute, it ought to have been much clearer about strong possible dangers of actually inflaming a matter with a possible catastrphic outcome.

Someone coming in and getting between two people can often escalate a situation into something a lot lot worse.

If a whole subway full of people can't be bothered to do anything to discourage one person from being nasty to another, what hope is there for anyone in a minority being safe from verbal abuse anywhere they go? It becomes mob rule, survival of the most intolerant.

Passing laws just covers the legalities. The laws still have to be enforced and respected. The police cannot accompany each individual 24/7 as they go about their lives.

I have reread it. They are not really talking about domestic violence scenarios.

But the article is full of holes. And in some scenarios, you could end up escalting the situation, and have a knife in you.

The made up scenarios may not end up like that, but in america, dont forget the gun culture etc.
