Apologies if there is a new Trump thread, but the only one I could find had hit the magic 1000 posts mark.
Just seen this on Facebook. Makes excellent sense.

Ankers Mon 13-Feb-17 17:08:50

varian - it is how a referendum works
on a single day[which wouldnt be today
people canvassing which always sways some people
whole country can vote not just daily mirror readers
a majority of 1 is sufficient
the majority of 1 is the will of the people as regards referendums

Out of interest, how is it going to affect your children specifically, and their children specifically, if you dont mind me asking?

whitewave Mon 13-Feb-17 17:29:46

Varian, I so agree with your post. The will of the people -a phrase so beloved by May, is trotted out at every opportunity. The trouble is it is being used and in danger if being used to justify so much that will be harmful to the UK. I fervently hope that the Lords and then the Commons will ensure that the tendency towards blind Brexit will be curtailed and a sensible outcome will be to all our benefit.

Rigby46 Mon 13-Feb-17 17:42:34

No Ankers this is not how a referendum works - it was how this particular ill thought out, badly designed referendum was set up by an arrogant PM and his colleagues who thought they would easily win and we're doing it for naked political advantage. It's quite common with referenda in general that involve huge constitutional change to have to reach a certain % - typically 66% - for the result to stand. DC made exactly the same arrogant mistakes with the Scottish referendum and learned nothing from it at all - again he arrogantly thought that it would be an easy win.

Ankers Mon 13-Feb-17 18:26:43

So which referendums exactly, in the UK needed 66% Rigby46?

Rigby46 Mon 13-Feb-17 19:23:40

<sighs>

Ankers Mon 13-Feb-17 19:27:38

So the answer is 0.

So it is exactly how a referendum works in the UK.

And not common in the slightest.

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 19:32:41

Two dreadful things happened in 2016 - the EU referendum and the election of Trump.
If that is your idea of dreadful then you live in a very benign country - as I do varian

POGS Mon 13-Feb-17 19:57:37

The link to the Independent is 4 months old, even mentions the 'upcoming ' Gina Miller court case.

How many times can old comments and news be regurgitated for heavens sake over the EU Referendum.

MawBroon Mon 13-Feb-17 20:02:11

Ana Mon 13-Feb-17 20:03:38

POGS, exactly. Not exactly up to date information about how people would vote now in a referendum.

Ana Mon 13-Feb-17 20:05:57

Why is stuff about the referendum on this thread anyway? confused

durhamjen Mon 13-Feb-17 20:07:44

So the Mirror one is too left-wing; the independent one is too old.
Which one would you like?
Unfortunately only the Mirror has given an up-to-date one.

It's sounding like Goldilocks and the three bears.
Which one would be just right?

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 20:09:53

sometimes I have to look at the OP to remind myself Ana, especially if I am on the tablet which has a habit of giving me the wrong thread!
perhaps we're having a referendum on whether or not Trump should come for a State Visit, would that be it?

durhamjen Mon 13-Feb-17 20:11:56

I can think of a lot better things to have a referendum on. Anyway, he'd make us pay for it.

MawBroon Mon 13-Feb-17 20:13:02

Ana was it Ankers post of 17.08 today?

Ana Mon 13-Feb-17 20:30:42

No, Mawbroon, I think varian's post of 16.55 was the turning point, but whatever...

Jalima Mon 13-Feb-17 20:41:05

It was; the post about the two dreadful things that happened in 2016

I would have thought that the escalation in Syria, refugee crisis, terrorist attacks on the Continent and Turkey including Nice, Brussels, Zika virus, Yemen, the list is endless were dreadful.

At the moment we do not know what the future holds with Brexit and Trump - at the moment most things are supposition, speculation and not fact. As DH says, there is enough to worry about without worrying about what may never happen.

rosesarered Mon 13-Feb-17 21:06:48

Hear hear Jalima

Cherrytree59 Mon 13-Feb-17 22:09:02

There speaks a DH with a lot of common sense!

Rinouchka Tue 14-Feb-17 08:29:24

Is John Le Carré writing the current Washington scenario?
Mike Flynn, Head of Security, now admits close encounters with Russia and resigns.
What next?

JessM Tue 14-Feb-17 08:38:36

I was predicting in the first week of the Trump presidency that the "team" would have problems and that either there would be a top level resignation or sacking within weeks.
Trump and his close advisers obviously have no idea how to put together a credible team and make it work.
There are also problems this week about the promotion of Ivanka's business by the White House.

AlieOxon Tue 14-Feb-17 08:48:45

...packed his bags and said goodbye to the circus - off he goes from a trumpety-trump. trump, trump. trump....

(Just light relief!)

Lewlew Tue 14-Feb-17 10:06:17

Flynn broke the law by contacting the Russians about government related issues when he was a private citizen and not yet NSA advisor. Inadvertently reported his conversations? He was not even supposed to have had them. Doh? confused

You stupid dysfunctional boy. Sally Yates warned them!!

And this debacle... John LeCarre indeed Rinouchka

whitewave Tue 14-Feb-17 15:05:20

Yates got the sack for her pains.

How much did trump know?

Lewlew Tue 14-Feb-17 18:22:27

whitewave I am beginning to wonder. It seems Spicer, Bannon, Flynn, and Conway might have their own agendas. You can only pay people a lot of money (and I mean a LOT of money) to give up their self-respect in trade for power.

Oh how I love SNL!!! Can't wait to see the next episode.

Flynn violated the Logan Act... but they likely won't charge him with treason. They don't hang for treason nowadays, maybe he should be hanged for hypocrisy! Lock HER up? It should be lock HIM up.

Did you see Pence’ shrug off the handshake in the news footage today, can’t find it to post. I guess Colin Powell would be one who knows how Pence feels. Not a Pence fan, but he was lied to deliberately by a high-ranking staffer.
