Theo Bartram, Blair and Brown's former advisor, says on Twitter that there are plenty of people in the PLP with the talent to be leader (I agree). However:

They must be able to:
-Connect to C2DE voters in Northern towns (thru personality, not policy)
-Communicate on TV
-Land blows on Tories

Backbenchers need to be coming up with a plan now, not just for a replacement, who could develop a stronger media presence, but formulate some really headline catching, realistic and deliverable policies.

It's only a matter of time before people see what a disaster Brexit is and austerity really begins to affect pensioners and C2 voters. Ukip is dead in the water for now, so Labour needs to up its game.

It's an interesting point about the C2s dd. I wonder if one of the problems is that the NRS scale is completely out of date and it needs some bright researchers to do a lot more work in this area.

There are a lot of what would have been C2 jobs disappearing and C1s, both being affected by automation and AI, and also the platform economy. In many other areas - I think of younger doctors, teachers, etc., the world, as defined by the NRS, is simply not the world they are living in. They are of often these days, although not the examples we would often see quoted, part of the gig economy.

The changes will happen. Turning back the tide is not an option but caring for the human within the job is surely what 'Labour' or whatever party evolves after the eruption of all the economies is all about. The gig economy works for barristers but not for those in warehouses. The new economies must be made to work for all - including those, should it happen, for whom there are no jobs. This shouldn't mean principles are dropped rather that they are used in a changing world.

I looked the leather trousers up Anniebach and actually the criticism came for other politicians (Like that nice educated Nicky Morgan) so not really a press attack.

Yes, they can annie. They can publish them in Prospect or via Progress, the Fabian Society, etc. They can influence journalists. Some of them already do.

I agree absolutely, GracesGran. People have been writing about this for ages and my DS is studying a module about it at uni, which is why I've become even more interested. People can't conveniently be classified by occupation any more. It's more about values and, crucially in the referendum, age and educational achievement.

I'm just going out, but it would be interesting to discuss this further.

I'm not sure that the causation bit of voters with higher levels of education has been proved dd. I would be interested to see more work done. It could be, for instance, that generally educational attainment was just not offered to the older generation in the same way as it has been to younger ones and that the older generation voted the way they did for other reasons - perhaps to do with their stage of life, etc., - and only coincidentally had lower levels of achievement ... or not

Accept that Labour has a ton of work to do to get Corbyn to be seen as electable as a PM, and that the Labour Party, irrespective of the Leader, needs to decide what it now stands for.

Rosesarered, the ton of work Labour has to do is get shot of Corbyn but he is protected by momentum , plus if there was a leadership election now we wouldn't get strong contenders because who ever is leader has a career for just a few years

I think Labour has to think ahead to 2025 , it will lose a lot of seats at the next election and eill have to do as Kinnock had to do, start from a wipe out

So that's two on each side, not everybody else however many hundreds that is on one side and me on the other, as roses suggested.
