On Nationalism… – English Scots for YES
Many of you will have seen the comments of London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan over the weekend to Scottish Labour’s annual conference; many of you will share the outrage felt by our members, by supporters of Scottish independence, and indeed across the Scottish political spectrum at what we feel is a complet...

Scotland represented in the Westminster Parliament?

SCOTTISH Questions this morning, chaired by David Mundell, the Secretary of State for Scotland, elected by virtue of the fact that he is the only Tory MP from Scotland. Only 1 SNP MP of the 56 who represent Scottish Constituencies was called to speak. Says it all really

I have no idea what you must have been watching?

I SNP MP spoke?

Where are you sourcing that infromation from as I believe it to be factually incorrect.

Granny23 Wed 01-Mar-17 21:58:47

POGS I am really embarrassed now as I repeated a tweet (forwarded to me by a friend) from an MP who was there at Westminster, without checking it out myself. I have now checked the Parliamentary record and see that in fact at least 4 Scottish MP's asked questions.

A salutory lesson to myself to practice what I preach and always double check sources.

durhamjen Wed 01-Mar-17 22:01:13

How many questions, Granny23?

Jalima Wed 01-Mar-17 22:21:00

It used to be called Chinese whispers (I suppose I am not allowed to say that any more shock) only now it is tweets.

'Send reinforcements, we're going to advance' ends up down the line as 'Send 3 and 4 pence, we going to a dance'.

grin

Granny 23

Easily done and thank you for responding.

I would not have said anymore but as durhamjen appears to want to question how many SNP MP's these are just ' a few ' SNP MP's who were called today.

Kirsty Blackman: Business Rates

Callum McCaig: Taxation

Angus Robertson: Agriculture and Fisheries x 2

Tasmina Ahmed-Sheik: CETA Trade Deal

Patrick Grady: Autumn Budget:

Margaret Ferried: EU Nationals

Dr. Phillipa Whitford: EU Nationals

Tommy Shephard: Devolved Powers

Pete Wishart: Brexit/Independent Scotland

I could carry on.

Sounds like a lot!

rosesarered Wed 01-Mar-17 22:43:01

It's a wonder why anyone would move there ( Three Cocks!) Is it a boastful village ab? grin

Jalima Wed 01-Mar-17 22:54:06

I think I prefer the Welsh name:
Aberllynfi

Jalima Wed 01-Mar-17 22:54:55

We seem to have slipped down the map a bit grin

Anniebach Wed 01-Mar-17 23:14:41

It isn't going to change , and the pub sign shows three cockerels , think of the cost to the pub, anyway give us a break, we have rather a lot of towns and villages beginning with Aber grin . Three Cocks is more interesting than Westminster

Anniebach Wed 01-Mar-17 23:16:02

Oh oh, the above post , I was speaking of the village honest

Jalima Wed 01-Mar-17 23:29:19

As a Scottish Scot, I heartily disagree with the "English Scots for yes". Like the majority of Scots, I say NO, although I didn't get the chance to vote in 2014 because I happened to be living in another part of our country.

I agree with Sadiq Khan, the SNP has much in common with UKIP, Trump, the French Front National and other nationalist parties. Although the SNP is not overtly racist, it operates in the same way by fostering a sense of greivance, dividing people into "them" and "us" and blaming "them" for everything that goes wrong. It gains votes by emotional manipulation at the expense of any logic.

Anyone who seriously thinks that the Indyref did not foster hatred has only got to look at the comments columns of any Scottish newspaper.

It makes little sense to want Scotland to remain in the EU which accounts for a far smaller proportion of Scotland's trade and at the same time want to separate from the UK.

FarNorth Thu 02-Mar-17 15:16:39

I repeated a tweet (forwarded to me by a friend) from an MP who was there at Westminster,

You would expect an MP who was there to get it right. Fake news is getting totally out of hand.

Jalima Thu 02-Mar-17 18:23:46

Interesting post varian
Always good to hear the other side of a discussion put in a rational, well-balanced way

Jalima Thu 02-Mar-17 18:24:24

And reassuring.

GillT57 Thu 02-Mar-17 20:25:21

Neatly and succinctly put varian. Most of my family who live in Scotland refer to her as 'the wee bism' grin

Jalima Thu 02-Mar-17 20:29:08

I had to look it up!

I like the Tracey Ullman version

durhamjen Thu 02-Mar-17 20:40:06

Interesting, varian. Do you think that, if Scotland has another referendum and decides to stay in the EU rather than the UK, the UK will not do the same amount of trade with Scotland, or will impose tariffs?

varian Thu 02-Mar-17 21:02:32

I would not want to see another Scottish referendum. After all wecwerevassured that in 2014bthat this was once in a lifetime (70 years or more! If it did happen I hope the answer would still be no.

varian Thu 02-Mar-17 21:04:26

Sorry about the fat finger typos. Forgot to do preview.

durhamjen Thu 02-Mar-17 21:12:36

What's Brexit if not nationalism?

durhamjen Thu 02-Mar-17 21:15:17

Varian, at the 2104 referendum the Scots were lied to.
Ought they not to have a referendum on the fact that they voted themselves out of the EU, even though they were told by all that a vote to stay in the UK was a vote to stay in the EU?
They were told that if they voted to leave the UK they would not be allowed to stay in the EU. It was a lie.

varian Thu 02-Mar-17 21:45:39

I'm not sure about that dj I know Guy Verhohfstadt thinks that Scotland could remain in the EU outside of the UK but most other legal experts have said not.

Lies were told in both referendums. Mostly by the SNP and UKIP.
