May or Sturgeon?

Ok the question is which is the better politician?
I'm going for Sturgeon. I find her a better speaker, she seems more sincere and more able to withstand questioning.
May sometimes looks like a rabbit in the headlights (I know I'm the leader but what do they want me to say ?)
Occasionally comes across as the Head girl (You must do what the Headmaster wants-it is his school)
And sometimes just seems to be a bit lost and needs her notes.
I know many of you will say it is my political views that have influenced my choice and you may be right. But let me know who you prefer.
Oh and completely un PC but quite fun I think Sturgeon has the better outfits!

confused by your post paddyann
Did you read my post about Mhairi Black ?

Where did I say I didn't like her accent? (in fact I don't think I have heard her speak)
Where did I say I didn't like her? (Well, I don't know that as I don't know her).

I was just saying make the most her, she doesn't want to continue as an MP, inspiring or not.

Ruth Davidson may be likeable as a person but that won't get her votes if her party's policies are unpopular.

The OP asks who is the better politician, not whose accent do you like or not.
Nicola Sturgeon at least answers the questions she is asked, a rare thing for a politician to do. To me that is "better".

Paddyann re Ruth Davidson - this thread is about the people not their party. My point was despite being the leader of a party which is unpopular in Scotland she scores very highly in terms of personal popularity. More so I think than NS despite being the leader of a very popular party. As to Westminster I agree with Mhairi and yourself there - they do need to stop the ridiculous antics in the chamber.

paddyann Thu 23-Mar-17 20:45:12

its not the job she doesn't like its the system and "tradition" of westminster ,SShe thinks its antiquated and she's right .It should be brought into the 21st century ,they should behave like adults instead of spoilt children jeering and making noises when they dont like whats being said.I honestly feel ashamed that these people we see on our screens acting like idiots are siupposed to be intelligent enough to represent us.*Jane 10 and Varian" Mhairi Black as we know is SNP and we also know that in your eyes its SNP BAD ! I would be proud to call he rmy child, she completed her degree while working part time AND campaigning for an election .Nobody can say she took the easy route .SNP are only there until we gain independence ,in effect they are working to make themselves redundant ...now you should be happy about that !Mhairi wont leave WM until the job is done .

FarNorth Thu 23-Mar-17 20:44:06

Mhairi Black has no intention of giving up being an MP, that's just the way it was reported after she said she is sick of Westminster and the way it operates - an example being the way her Private Member's Bill to make sanctions a little bit fairer was talked out by Tory MPs.

durhamjen Thu 23-Mar-17 20:25:48

Maybe that's what she wants to do. I admire her for admitting it. Then she could go back to parliament in a few years time.
Of course, MPs do represent students as well.

varian Thu 23-Mar-17 16:39:50

Perhaps she should have spent a few years in the "real world" doing another job before she stood for Parliament.

Jane10 Thu 23-Mar-17 15:52:16

Yes she's so idealistic that she wants to leave parliament. She could try a job in the real world!

paddyann Thu 23-Mar-17 13:24:44

Jalima I think Mhairi Black is a very inspiring young woman, whether you like her Paisley accent or not.She has made more contributions to debates in the commons than most other MP's ,,she's young hardworking and idealistic .Whats not to like ?

paddyann Thu 23-Mar-17 13:18:07

Jane10 that'll be the Ruth Davidson whose party was elected with a MASSIVE surge in the tory vote to 22% ...from the DISASTROUS vote of 24% a few years ago..the Ruth who told us AFTER the brexit vote that it would be a disater for Scotland and we needed to stay in the EU ...and then changed her mind? The tories who only have MSP's because they are on the list ,some of whom were third on the list ,some who tried four times to get elected and still only made it to the list ! Theres NO tory surge here its media spin !!

nigglynellie Thu 23-Mar-17 12:02:00

Hard to say really!!!!

TerriBull Thu 23-Mar-17 11:08:52

Ah but Danny came down through the "legitimate" line nigglynellie, as we know Charles II put it about all over the place and had loads and loads of "bastards", most kings did to be fair. I believe one of his bastards were responsible for David Cameron's eventual appearance in the world. How fortunate, or possibly not!

nigglynellie Thu 23-Mar-17 11:00:24

Everyone is related to Charles11 !!!wink

TerriBull Thu 23-Mar-17 10:59:00

Yes I know Jalima I read somewhere that descendants would probably run into millions, but DD was off the scale as far as being overcome with awe when all this was uncovered (or should I say "orf" cos that's how naice posh people pronounce off) I did like Stephen Fry's comment at the BAFTAS where Prince William was in attendance, which went something like this "Prince William is still recovering from the shock of finding out he's related to Danny Dyer grin

Jalima Thu 23-Mar-17 10:48:04

Terribull grin
although there are possibly about 6 million descendants of Edward III (including some of my mother's relatives - ooh, posh!!).

TerriBull Thu 23-Mar-17 10:37:32

Emily Thornberry is pretty posh inspite of her protestations otherwise. Actually, I think her accent is quite attractive, it's got a low pitch which is always a good thing for anyone involved in public speaking. For further clarification for those who can't distinguish between a posh southern accent, try listening to Danny Dyer his accent definitely aint posh, but possibly HE IS having recently watched "Who Do You Think You Are" Then as pointed out by Jalima at the other end of the spectrum is the fogey aka Jacob Rees-Mogg. Everyone else is somewhere in between grin

TerriBull Thu 23-Mar-17 10:25:19

Jalima I agree, a well modulated accent doesn't equate to posh. Posh is an overused term, few people are, as you say Jacob R-M definitely. Plenty of people speak well, but often accentless.

Jalima Thu 23-Mar-17 10:21:59

In fact, Corbyn could be accused of sounding 'posh' if the same criteria are applied as you applied to May djen, ie a voice heard over the radio.
But, of course, in reality he is even posher grin

Jalima Thu 23-Mar-17 10:13:44

Theresa May doesn't sound posh, just accentless!

Posh is Jacob R-M

Jalima Thu 23-Mar-17 10:13:00

Oh yes and then there's young Mhairi Black.
Ah well, make the most of her term in office as she doesn't like the political scene and may give up after one term.
Or does she worry she will be out of a job if Scotland becomes independent and wants to get into the Scottish parliament?
Cynical moi?

Anniebach Thu 23-Mar-17 10:08:40

I don't live in the north or south , my dislike of Sturgeon is her voice grates ,it's harsh and loud. What is posh about May? Is one posh if one doesn't have an accent ? If so there are very few posh people in Scotland ,Wales or N.I.

henetha Thu 23-Mar-17 10:06:40

Theresa May every time for me. Although she has yet to be proved as a good Prime Minister, at least I feel she is sincere.
Nicola Sturgeon irritates me every time I see or hear her.
I might have some respect for her capabilities if she did not have such a one track mind. All her efforts are being put into making Scotland independent, whether or not the majority of the people want it. I wish she would concentrate on her job of being first Minister instead of bullying, cajoling and whinging the whole time about Scottish independence. I think she will go on and on and on, ad nauseum, until she gets her own way, regardless.
In short, I dislke her very much.

rosesarered Thu 23-Mar-17 09:53:59

Once I have got attuned to hearing a Scottish accent, if the person speaks well, then I can understand them, so I can understand NS and Davidson with nae bother, as opposed to say, Rab C Nesbitt ( which is like hearing Russian to me.)

rosesarered Thu 23-Mar-17 09:50:04

What's with all this 'humane' stuff when describing NS? I know that she doesn't go round hitting anyone, but......?
Have never thought that TM sounds particularly 'posh' ,well spoken but surely not posher than Cameron?! No, it's not a North/South divide thing ( I am Northern) but don't expect PM's, Leaders, MP's to speak with strong regional accents/ or speak badly, they need to be understood by all, in person, on the radio, on tv etc.

Azie09 Thu 23-Mar-17 09:07:11

I dislike May intensely too. I think she's busy apeing Thatcher and not really up to the job. I read that she's frustrating the civil servants (emotionally and in practical terms) by insisting on reading absolutely everything and gumming up the works of everyday government. Her voice irritates me too.
Nicolas Sturgeon is feisty and humane and would get my vote if I were Scottish.
I reluctantly like Kenneth Clark, am even appreciating John Major but the politician par excellence for me is Caroline Lucas - clear, calm, honest, articulate, unafraid to argue unpopular policies and bravely soldiering on as a lone MP and doing some good work. Oh yes and then there's young Mhairi Black.
