Brexit all done and dusted?

As an arch REMOANER I for one (of many) will not simply roll over and say that is that. As things progress at the very least parliament must ensure that the country does not Brexit in a bad way because of "The Will of the People". So many lies were told by both side at the time of referendum that when the full facts come to light a re-think should be considered.

I have yet to hear a sound reason for voting LEAVE. Of course the EU is far from perfect but we are better trying to change it from within than sniping from outside. A general election or second referendum before the point of absolute no return.

I happen to be visiting Brussels on an educational trip after Easter so until then I will put up and shut up unless really provoked.

I was just going to say exactly that, whitewave.

POGS, you give the impression that I said a lot. I didn't. If you are going to use names in a post, make sure you differentiate like you normally do.

I know it wasn't me because I do not use the * word even as an abbreviation. Nobody else would have done by your post.

Last time I looked May was the PM - that is why she was singled out as what she says may make a difference. The others are only giving opinions.

I am relieved Corbyn didn't wear that baseball cap he has been sporting recently .

It was the manner of delivery as well as the untrue message which I objected to with TM. Have only read Tim Farron's and have not seen Jeremy Corbyn's

rosesarered Mon 17-Apr-17 07:50:58

I thought that all the Easter messages were ok.

rosesarered Mon 17-Apr-17 07:48:16

POGS grin of course you are right.......they don't like T May so have singled her out for making an Easter message.Such hypocracy.

Turkey is really scarey- the cities apparently voted against. Can you see them just accepting the result? I think we'll see massive protests and even more mass arrests and imprisonments. Basically it was a vote for dictatorship wasn't it? No chance of them joining the EU now ( even if there ever were)

JessM Sun 16-Apr-17 22:05:07

Depressing news from Turkey. Voted away their democracy. No truth in the fake news story that they were on the brink of joining the EU then. Bad idea referendums.

daphnedill Sun 16-Apr-17 21:57:59

I don't think I'll decamp to Brussels. I'll just double my fees. grin I might even end up having to pay VAT (some hope! sad

"But there's one key detail about the Brexit negotiations that nobody's really mentioning..."

Hmm...The Indy obviously doesn't read Gransnet. I've pondered at least twice about what will happen to English as a language. The Irish will have to start using Gaelic.

JessM Sun 16-Apr-17 20:53:12

I think by the end of April the PM is going to be a lot less smug. She won't be able to swan around making assertions about negotiating trade deals while negotiating the terms on which we would leave etc.
Remember when she was insisting that the negotiations would be secret as a justification for excluding parliament from the process? And all the nonsense based on the idea that the UK has any power in the negotiation.
It will be a bit of a relief to have some of the hard reality rather than "positive" messages based on wishful thinking.
The interesting question now is whether the negotiators can come up with something they can bring before the EU parliament within 18 months. Something that takes into account the treaties between UK and Ireland.
I've thought about it a lot and I can't think of any way to meet the PM's determination to have a hard Brexit while maintaining an open border between NI and Republic.

Your comment to myself

" Strange that you should want them all to be treated in the same way considering you think Corbyn immaterial in other ways."

That is precisely what I have been getting at! I don't understand the point some are making that Theresa May should be 'singled out' for having made an Easter Message. I do believe that ALL Political Party Leaders should be treated in the same way over the making of an Easter Message. Why on earth would I think it acceptable to think they are not ALL entitled to do so.?

Why the comments such as :-

"Easter Mesage -FFS who does she think she is, the Pope? "

"As far as Easter Messages are concerned I think that Theresa May has bl**dy cheek. Who on earth does she think she is? Easter Messages belong to christian religions, without whom the festival wouldn't even exist (yes, I do know about pre-christian Spring festivals so no need to jump in with moans about christian appropriation of pagan festivals). Is it because she's a vicar's daughter that she thinks she's our spiritual leader?

The only people who should be giving Easter messages are christian leaders, such as the archbishop of Canterbury, or the Queen."

You yourself posted Alistair Campbell's who said :-

" May should tread carefully when linking her faith to the political challenges facing the country. “I think even vicars’ daughters should be a little wary of allying their politics to their faith,”

Yet Farron and Corbyn who did the exact same and produced an Easter Message are not viewed in the way. Why?

You either ho!d with the principal that it is inappropriate for politicians to make Easter Messages or not. Having given the impression it is not appropriate it is very odd to then go on to say you however find it acceptable if the Message is agreeable because the content aligns with your thoughts and views.

Personally I don't have a problem with ANY Political Leader making an Easter Message whether I agree or disagree with them or not. Easter Messages are hardly a new concept.

A job for you in Brussels, daphne.

"The British government is slowly realising Brexit is “an act of great self-harm” and that upcoming EU-UK negotiations must seek to limit the damage, the State’s top Brexit official has said.
The official, John Callinan, said on Thursday: “I see signs in the contacts that we’re having, both at EU level and with the UK, of a gradual realisation that Brexit in many ways is an act of great self-harm, and that the focus now is on minimising that self-harm.”

Mr Callinan also highlighted the existence of internal divisions on the British side just weeks out from the start of formal withdrawal negotiations with the EU, saying it was clear there was “no single, settled position” on Brexit in London. "

From an Irish newspaper.

I will if you will.
Pleased to see you are tired of the idea of the UK selling arms to Saudi to kill Yemeni children. Perhaps you will support those who campaign to get it stopped.

Oh give it a rest dj. [yawn]

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 19:10:02

Ashamed of it, are you, Ana?

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 19:09:05

So you are quite happy about this happening in May's name, are you, niggly?

Ana Sun 16-Apr-17 19:05:39

I doubt it, as I've never disclosed which it is.

daphnedill Sun 16-Apr-17 19:02:10

I disagree with you,*niggly*. Tim Farron has never made any secret of the fact that he's an evangelical Christian. However, I respect him for not trying to proselytize, respecting others' points of view and not turning his Christianity into a virtue.

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 19:01:31

There are some of my fellow constituents who post on here, Ana. I imagine your posts have frightened off any of yours.

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 19:00:14

Did Theresa May say that Jesus died for everyone?

durhamjen Sun 16-Apr-17 18:59:30

"Nostalgia and nationalism have become the fuel for an aggressive and irrational brand of politics that is the opposite of what Liberals stand for. I don’t want the Christian message to be stolen by the nostalgic nationalists, just as no Liberal should seek to appropriate Jesus for their own purposes either. But the Easter message is one of internationalism, if you like – Jesus died for you no matter who you are or where you are from. And the Easter message is most definitely not about comfortable nostalgia, it is radical and disturbing. People do not traditionally willingly exchange riches, glory and comfort for poverty, shame and pain – but that is what we see in the Easter story.

Christmas is cute and cosy, it’s about a baby. Easter is about the death that the same baby would grow up to suffer. It’s much more grim, no wonder people choose to displace it with chocolate.

But it wasn’t the end of the story. The resurrection means that this death wasn’t in vain – it’s the ultimate vindication which brings forgiveness. That’s worth celebrating."

Just read Tim FARRON'S speech. Some good parts in it, whether you are religious or not.
Who can argue with the fact that Jesus died for you np matter who you are or where you are from?

Of course, some Christians forget about that bit, conveniently. They think the mesage was just for white Anglosaxons.

Ana Sun 16-Apr-17 18:56:25

(and your fellow constituents of course, who probably don't post on here)
