Perhaps i should count myself lucky that in RL I know no-one who is a political or religious zealot although on GN I've encountered both.
I'd agree with eloethan that whatever their political leanings teachers can be excellent and hard-working or non-committed and ineffective.

I must admit I have occasionally wondered why there are so many former teachers on GN. Or perhaps it just appears that way because they're the most vocal?

I was thinking that exact thing beam. But there's little introspection to be found on these threads. Only a crushing certainty that they are right. Wonder if they have a life outside of GN?

On a serious note, it's when GN and politics appear to be an obsession or addiction. In either case it's not healthy.

Ana If you object to the proponderance of teachers' opinions on Gransnet then perhaps you
and other complainers should contribute more yourself - no-one is stopping you. (and, contrary to the view expressed on GN, I am not an ex-teacher but an ex-legal secretary.

But if a life on GN or MN is all that you have Petra, I think I can understand why someone could become so heavily invested in it, to the exclusion of all else. If you have no one in real life to discuss things with or you've bored them all into submission , especially a subject that is important to you, I can see how the importance of web forums would take on a more important role in life than for those who can have a "real life" debate. GN is many different things to many people.

I have noticed you're always keen to have a go at me Eloethan, no matter how many others express the same opinion.

I did not object to the preponderance of teachers on GN, just made the comment that there seem to be a lot. I was a legal secretary for most of my working life too, although I'm sure that's all we have in common.

Legal Secretaries have my respect.

I've visited a number of asylum seekers, who arrived in London but were sent to the north west because of the dispersal plan and also because rents are cheaper. I've also visited British born families who were shipped to the north west because rents were cheaper. Both groups find themselves isolated from support and often in sub standard housing. One British family were housed illegally, with adolescent boys and girls having to share one bedroom. Others were house in damp properties with numerous faults and rat/cockroach infestations.
I've seen some good housing as well. The substandard housing tended to be owned by London based companies that bought up cheap terraced housing in the north west/north east.
I know a few people (mostly younger than me) who have bought terraced properties locally as rental property. It's their way of grouping together to build a pension. They do provide good rental properties.

Well!! that interview on the radio today with Dianne Abbott.........what a mess she made of it! It can't have done the Labour cause any good at all.
I listened to the whole thing, it was jaw dropping stuff.
Later said 'she had mis-spoken' yes, Dianne, several times in fact.What a woeful person to be shadow home sec.

After Diane Abbott's performance on radio and TV who in their right mind would vote for Labour. The country would be bankrupt after a year, they'd be bowing and scraping to Merkel and Brussels and taxing the workers up to the hilt. No thanks.

It doesn't matter what government we have. Taxes are going to rise. The question is who will take the brunt of the tax rises.
