Statement of intent not the manifesto

1. Reverse the cut in corporation tax saving £64bn over the parliamentary cycle
2£10 minimum wage for all over 18s
3. 17% rise in unpaid farmers allowance (exrea £500 pa) - paid by reversing the Inheritance Tax cut.
4. Renationalise railways as the franchises lapse
5. Stop NHS private contracts. Phase out existing private contracts thus saving 3.5bn - 5bn at present going as profit to the private health companies
6. Build 200k homes a year. Half from the private sector and half council homes by giving LAs the power to borrow against assets. This should ensure that 12bn housing benefit bill at present going into private landlords pockets should gradually fall.
7. 4 new public holidays
8. End zero- hours jobs by guaranteeing a contract for all workers on regular hours.
9 Ban any company from tendering for government contracts if they are based in an off shore tax haven and pay their CEO more tha £350k pa
10 stop the opening of new free schools and grammars
11 Stop sweetheart deLs between HMRC and bug corps. All large companies should publish their tax returns
12 Eradicate gender pay gap
13 cut business rates by £1.5bn
14 End the practice by large corps, of taking longer than the accepted 28 days to pay SMEs

It doesn't matter what government we have. Taxes are going to rise. The question is who will take the brunt of the tax rises.

After Diane Abbott's performance on radio and TV who in their right mind would vote for Labour. The country would be bankrupt after a year, they'd be bowing and scraping to Merkel and Brussels and taxing the workers up to the hilt. No thanks.

Anniebach Tue 02-May-17 17:56:11

If they win the election we can but hope he doesn't make her foreign secretary

rosesarered Tue 02-May-17 17:48:35

Well!! that interview on the radio today with Dianne Abbott.........what a mess she made of it! It can't have done the Labour cause any good at all.
I listened to the whole thing, it was jaw dropping stuff.
Later said 'she had mis-spoken' yes, Dianne, several times in fact. What a woeful person to be shadow home sec.

I've visited a number of asylum seekers, who arrived in London but were sent to the north west because of the dispersal plan and also because rents are cheaper. I've also visited British born families who were shipped to the north west because rents were cheaper. Both groups find themselves isolated from support and often in sub standard housing. One British family were housed illegally, with adolescent boys and girls having to share one bedroom. Others were house in damp properties with numerous faults and rat/cockroach infestations.
I've seen some good housing as well. The substandard housing tended to be owned by London based companies that bought up cheap terraced housing in the north west/north east.
I know a few people (mostly younger than me) who have bought terraced properties locally as rental property. It's their way of grouping together to build a pension. They do provide good rental properties.

You're fond of the one-line put downs aren't you Ana.

petra Mon 01-May-17 18:48:19

Eloethan I'm the only one that gets pulled up on spelling grin
I love lunchtime drinking.

Ana Mon 01-May-17 18:43:59

I'll just ignore that - as you say, you've had a few...

Eloethan Mon 01-May-17 18:42:39

You say "I'm sure that's all we have in common" - so who is picking on who?

Beammeupscottie Mon 01-May-17 18:41:25

Legal Secretaries have my respect.

Ana Mon 01-May-17 18:34:15

I have noticed you're always keen to have a go at me Eloethan, no matter how many others express the same opinion.

I did not object to the preponderance of teachers on GN, just made the comment that there seem to be a lot. I was a legal secretary for most of my working life too, although I'm sure that's all we have in common.

Eloethan Mon 01-May-17 18:31:52

Lest anyone decides to pick me up on my spelling - "preponderance" and "complainants". (I've just been out to lunch and have had a few drinks).

rosesarered Mon 01-May-17 18:31:11

Not healthy at at all, like any obsession.Oh well, how many weeks to go now?
Then imagine the threads after the GE!

Chewbacca Mon 01-May-17 18:28:11

But if a life on GN or MN is all that you have Petra, I think I can understand why someone could become so heavily invested in it, to the exclusion of all else. If you have no one in real life to discuss things with or you've bored them all into submission , especially a subject that is important to you, I can see how the importance of web forums would take on a more important role in life than for those who can have a "real life" debate. GN is many different things to many people.

Eloethan Mon 01-May-17 18:27:31

Ana If you object to the proponderance of teachers' opinions on Gransnet then perhaps you
and other complainers should contribute more yourself - no-one is stopping you. (and, contrary to the view expressed on GN, I am not an ex-teacher but an ex-legal secretary.

petra Mon 01-May-17 18:20:24

Living on a thread grin
On a serious note, it's when GN and politics appear to be an obsession or addiction. In either case it's not healthy.

Chewbacca Mon 01-May-17 18:19:10

I was thinking that exact thing beam. But there's little introspection to be found on these threads. Only a crushing certainty that they are right. Wonder if they have a life outside of GN?

Beammeupscottie Mon 01-May-17 18:13:29

Chewbacca.

Oh the gift to see ourselves as other people see us.

Ana - Gift of the gab!

Ana Mon 01-May-17 18:10:52

I must admit I have occasionally wondered why there are so many former teachers on GN. Or perhaps it just appears that way because they're the most vocal?

Chewbacca Mon 01-May-17 18:10:39

less is more, scottie. You could practice what you preach

grin oh the irony! grin

mcem Mon 01-May-17 18:05:33

Perhaps i should count myself lucky that in RL I know no-one who is a political or religious zealot although on GN I've encountered both.
I'd agree with eloethan that whatever their political leanings teachers can be excellent and hard-working or non-committed and ineffective.

durhamjen Mon 01-May-17 17:59:58

Less is more, scottie. You could practise what you preach.

Eloethan Mon 01-May-17 17:57:18

beamemeupscorttie You say, "The worst kind of teachers are left wing teachers". I would say the worst kind of teachers are those that do not really care about their students, be they left wing or right wing.

Chewbacca Mon 01-May-17 17:52:12

Brilliant post beam, well said.wine

Beammeupscottie Mon 01-May-17 17:52:11

There is a difference in occasionally posting as against living on a thread. Less is more - always.
