Statement of intent not the manifesto

1. Reverse the cut in corporation tax saving £64bn over the parliamentary cycle
2£10 minimum wage for all over 18s
3. 17% rise in unpaid farmers allowance (exrea £500 pa) - paid by reversing the Inheritance Tax cut.
4. Renationalise railways as the franchises lapse
5. Stop NHS private contracts. Phase out existing private contracts thus saving 3.5bn - 5bn at present going as profit to the private health companies
6. Build 200k homes a year. Half from the private sector and half council homes by giving LAs the power to borrow against assets. This should ensure that 12bn housing benefit bill at present going into private landlords pockets should gradually fall.
7. 4 new public holidays
8. End zero- hours jobs by guaranteeing a contract for all workers on regular hours.
9 Ban any company from tendering for government contracts if they are based in an off shore tax haven and pay their CEO more tha £350k pa
10 stop the opening of new free schools and grammars
11 Stop sweetheart deLs between HMRC and bug corps. All large companies should publish their tax returns
12 Eradicate gender pay gap
13 cut business rates by £1.5bn
14 End the practice by large corps, of taking longer than the accepted 28 days to pay SMEs

You are so lucky, durhamjen, and obviously don't need JC's benevolent gesture.

My local hospital charges £1.10 per hour, with a minimum of 2 hours parking! If you are so much as 1 minute late in driving out, you receive a penalty of £40, if paid within 14 days; £70 if more than 14 days. The furore that this has caused locally is perfectly understandable, when you consider that many people arriving at the hospital, are there due to an emergency, and putting money in a parking machine may well be the last thing on your mind when your taking a sick relative to hospital. I know of many people who have appealed. I don't know of any who have succeeded in their appeal.

Hence people may call for ambulances when they may not necessarily need one Chewie

Chewbacca Tue 09-May-17 20:27:36

Think so Jalima. When my DDIL went into hospital to have DGD last year, she had some complications and had to stay in for about 10 days. My DS said that he was putting in £12 a day for parking fees so that he could stay with her. Huge amount of money for anyone but prohibitive for those on low income. You even have to pay if you're only dropping a friend or relative off for an appointment and not actually stopping with them. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

durhamjen Tue 09-May-17 20:29:54

Don't be silly, Ana. It's not about me; it's about everyone who cannot afford the cost of parking.

I remember once when my husband and I had just left the Freeman where he had just had radiation treatment for the cancer that killed him, there was a woman at the ticket machine feeding it, and I was surprised at how much she was putting in.
She was from Cumbria, and her husband had had to come to the Freeman because it was the only hospital that could treat her husband.
He had been in there for a couple of weeks and would probably be there for another couple at least.
It was costing them a fortune, and she was driving for hours, and I wondered why she did not stay over in Newcastle. She had to get back for her children. It was the only thing that was keeping her sane, seeing the children every morning and night.

Corbyn is thinking of other people as well. That's what socialists do.

This is from 2012 so Labour (sorry New Labour) were quite happy about charging patients for parking and the Daily Mailshock along with Tory MP Chris Skidmore was campaigning to get parking charges abolished:

Creeping commercialization

There will be increasing pressure to generate new sources of income. For example, National Car Parks runs hospital car parking.

In 2000 the Government launched a 10-year ‘reform’ programme called the NHS Plan which continued the market-oriented, pro-business policies begun under the Tories. The Blair administration maintains that it doesn’t matter who provides care – so long as it is publicly funded.

Sadly, it will take a lot of unpicking if that is what is needed.

durhamjen Tue 09-May-17 21:02:04

Shows how stupid the Tory MPs are, Jalima.
Skidmore wanted it stopped in 2012.
There was an EDM in parliament last year and it was talked out by Philip Davies.
If he hadn't done that, it could be law now, and the Tories could have taken the credit for it.

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 21:16:56

Oh yes, I remember that - was that backed by Cameron and the party or just an irritating MP thinking he was clever - does he have shares in NCP?

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 21:19:54

Conservative MP Philip Davies has made a name for himself in Parliament by blocking legislation using a tactic called the “filibuster”.
where's the Speaker, can't he shut him up?

MaizieD Tue 09-May-17 21:24:55

No, Jalima, the Speaker can't shut him up. That's why MPs do it. Because they can...

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 21:32:11

So no Order, Order then

He looks as if he's a very irritating man

Fitzy54 Tue 09-May-17 22:42:29

Surely most MPs recognise how ridiculous this is, and if so surely they can do something to change things?

durhamjen Tue 09-May-17 23:01:33

They've had an EDM to try and stop filibustering.
Guess what happened!

Jalima1108 Tue 09-May-17 23:18:28

You are joking!!

As Victor would say
I don't believe it!

durhamjen Tue 09-May-17 23:41:06

MPs debate filibustering.

durhamjen Tue 09-May-17 23:42:43

That this House has considered the procedure for debating and voting on Private Members’ Bills.

That was the conclusion they came to.

durhamjen Tue 09-May-17 23:43:17

The NHS Reinstatement Bill was talked out at the same time.

daphnedill Wed 10-May-17 00:05:49

It's no surprise, but there are rumours that a breakaway group of about 100 Labour MPs are planning to leave the party and form a separate party, if Corbyn stays on after the election.

Also...the CPS is going to make a statement tomorrow about election expenses. Rumours are that there will be no case to answer.

Eloethan Wed 10-May-17 00:26:54

My local hospital charges £1.25 per hour. Presumably there has to be at least some charge because someone has to make sure that people are not misusing the car park, and there are also maintenance costs.

I would think that there should be some sort of dispensation for close family who come to see their loved ones on a regular basis (maybe there is in some hospitals?).

Apparently hospital workers in some hospitals have to pay car parking charges, which I think is totally wrong, especially as they often work early morning and night shifts.

Anniebach Wed 10-May-17 08:40:43

I now think it is time for the Labour Party to split . Corbyns speech yesterday was obviously a party leadership speech . He was appealing to the far left with no thought of reaching out across the country for votes to win the general election.

Anniebach Wed 10-May-17 08:58:33

Corbyn said yesterday he has a strong, experienced shadow cabinet , who are they?

rosesarered Wed 10-May-17 09:33:50

Well, let's hope the rumour mill is true, high time Labour MP's broke away and formed a more centrist political Party.

Anniebach Wed 10-May-17 09:44:18

I have feared it Rosesareredbut now I want it to split. I do not want to be a member of a party run by fsr left militants and this is happening. There are so many good labour MP's who cannot support the far left . We need a party of the centre and centre left

Anniebach Wed 10-May-17 10:01:34

Buzz feed has been banned from all labour campaigns and McClusky's aide has been selected to stand in Liverpool , wonder if Derek Hatton will become events organizer
