The exit pole predicting no overall majority.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 09-Jun-17 14:29:56

Jeremy Corbyn fought a good fight, based on issues not insults, whilst enduring a barrage of abuse. That included outright lies by the Tories, the Sun, the Mail, etc. Proves that people will listen if you can make yourself heard over the noise.

Well put Bluecat. I do just wonder how the LP could have done if the whole party had got behind him.

daphnedill Fri 09-Jun-17 14:30:09

The UK can't go bankrupt.

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 14:32:59

And he'd had media support

GracesGranMK2 Fri 09-Jun-17 14:33:38

I understand money flow daphnedill I work to a tight budget every day and spend my life balancing the books.

Gillybob that is exactly what DD didn't mean. A household income is not like the economy of a country and does not work in the same way.

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 14:33:46

Yes I know dd ??

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 14:34:29

Oh sorry thought you were talking to go and me

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 14:35:14

gg

you can tell I only had 3 hrs sleep!!!!

Fitzy54 Fri 09-Jun-17 14:37:17

Well, if they borrow a ton of money and the economy doesn't grow, they will have to print money to pay it off. Inflation will take off and at its worst the currency could become effectively worthless. That's as good a definition of bankruptcy as any. I'm not suggesting that would happen but we could suffer very badly.

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 14:42:14

Love the way the Tories are suddenly beginning to find their inner compassion!!! "

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 14:43:37

fitz these arguments have been argued over for ever. The answer is still the same

durhamjen Fri 09-Jun-17 14:45:14

I wonder if May has forgotten that she is still being investigated for lies she told about Diane Abbott.

Nandalot Fri 09-Jun-17 14:46:33

Just watching the DUP leader. So less than 300,000 voters now are the lynchpin of our government.

Marieeliz Fri 09-Jun-17 14:46:51

Corbyn only got the votes because of his Giveaway to Students and others. He won't have to prove he cannot do it now, without bankrupting the country.

daphnedill Fri 09-Jun-17 14:48:47

No, it's not bankruptcy in the way Greece was bankrupt. Argentina is in a financial mess for all sorts of reasons, but it's not bankrupt.

Almost all money issued by the government returns to the Treasury via taxes, unless it's issued to tax avoiders or we buy too many imports.

The deficit is the result of lower tax takes. "Overspending" doesn't cause the deficit.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 09-Jun-17 14:50:27

It doesn't feel exactly democratic does it Nandalot.

daphnedill Fri 09-Jun-17 14:50:43

No, he didn't Marieeliz. How many students have you spoken to?

Repeat - he CAN'T bankrupt the country.

Fitzy54 Fri 09-Jun-17 15:02:48

I won't argue over the technical definition of bankruptcy, which is simply having assets of insufficient value to pay liabilities. if you can print infinite amounts of money you could argue that can never happen, though it certainly could if your currency is worthless and you have foreign debt. But all this is really irrelevant to the simple fact that if a country keeps growing its debt without growing its economy, it will eventually end up in the mire. The only question is how deeply in the mire.

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 15:04:33

Thats exactly what the Tories have been doing!!!!!!

Fitzy54 Fri 09-Jun-17 15:14:52

WW that may be true. But would it be even worse under Labour given that they want to tax and borrow a lot more, and really can't be at all sure that the economy will react as they hope? That's the question.
The technical bankruptcy point is a bit of a red herring - the real point is that getting it wrong will be painful, possibly very painful indeed, and certainly not conducive to an improved NHS, more police, better social care, free university education or a triple lock on pensions. I guess we might get away with a few extra bank holidays.
This article is pretty good in the subject.

In any event I'm now off for a couple of days, possibly without any network connection. Have a great weekend everyone - plenty to discuss!

Penstemmon Fri 09-Jun-17 15:19:17

Sad that we are, as a country, depending on the whim of 10 mysoginist, terror suppoting fundamentalists, anti LGBTQ climate change deniers for our government to function. Sound a bit ISIS to me shock

f77ms Fri 09-Jun-17 15:24:25

Penstemmon yes my thoughts exactly . Very worrying but I guess she will do anything to keep her job regardless of the best interests of the country

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 15:28:01

Dont forget to add - with paramilitary connections and investigatio for serious fraud by its leader

Penstemmon Fri 09-Jun-17 15:30:01

Sorry misogynist!!

Riverwalk Fri 09-Jun-17 15:31:02

This loose coalition will unravel before it gets started.
