The exit pole predicting no overall majority.

joannewton46 Fri 09-Jun-17 15:37:58

I did stay up until 6am when the hung parliament was definite. Not the result I would have liked but at least she doesn't now have the majority to ride roughshod over the country. It would be nice to think that she might look at the figures and learn something - but I doubt it.

devongirl Fri 09-Jun-17 15:39:42

No sign of that so far. The front on her!!

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 16:13:56

Still some idiot Tory talking about hard left.
So 40%+ in tbe UK are now hard left?
Well they have got into bed with a really dodgy extreme Trump style party with links to paramilitaries and fraud

devongirl Fri 09-Jun-17 16:25:38

It's just appalling for people in NI

Nvella Fri 09-Jun-17 16:30:03

Absolutely brilliant - has restored my faith in the British electorate.

MawBroon Fri 09-Jun-17 16:32:43

But if the "Labour opposition" want to outvote the Tories in the H of C they would neeed the support of ALL the other parties including these highly undesirable bedfellows hmm
A rock and a hard place?

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 16:43:39

As the Dup in devolved can they vote for everything in westminster?

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 17:00:18

"For hours the left wing grans happily chatted amongst ourselves enjoying the moment and then you took it into your head to butt in and disrupt it
An admission at last! Get off the threads anyone who doesn't support Corbyn!
If it wasn't so ridiculous it would be funny
grin

MawBroon Fri 09-Jun-17 17:02:01

Of course, confused they have been elected to Westminster just like the SNP but I believe traditionally the Ulster Unionists do no take their sears (or have not done so)

MawBroon Fri 09-Jun-17 17:04:17

Norty non-left wing grans (or indeed left-wing grans doing anything so decadent as sleeping) how very DARE they butt into what was clearly a private conversation hmm

MawBroon Fri 09-Jun-17 17:04:51

"Seats" not "sears"

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 17:06:29

I did thik the Lib Dems might have done even better and am surprised at the low vote for them considering so many people were disgruntled over the EU referendum vote.
But 12 is better than last time.

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 17:09:04

I thought it was Sinn Fein that didn't take their seats and don't vote which would seem to be a fairly useless gesture.

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 17:11:04

So how does it work if the Tories take one side?

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 17:11:24

As the Dup in devolved can they vote for everything in westminster?
I don't know, would not have thought so. But presumably anything else that has not been devolved - although quite a lot has.

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 17:14:40

well, that was a pretty vague answer to whitewave
sorry
Issues on which the Northern Ireland Assembly has full legislative powers:

health and social services
education
employment and skills
agriculture
social security
pensions and child support
housing
economic development
local government
environmental issues, including planning
transport
culture and sport
the Northern Ireland Civil Service
equal opportunities
justice and policing

Are they still able to vote on these devolved issues?

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 17:16:10

Mumsnet reckon that teaming up with the DUP may well break the Good Friday Agrrement. I think that argument almost certainly has traction.

Ashdown hinted at it.

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 17:17:46

So even if they can get over the Good Friday thing, there are still major issues to be solved

whitewave Fri 09-Jun-17 17:18:12

Sinn Fein will be spitting tacks

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 17:25:33

This is very frivolous and someone may have posted it before or on another thread, but best to warn someone before you do a high five:

Penstemmon Fri 09-Jun-17 17:57:21

Sinn Fein may change their mind about not taking their seats if they can scupper May!

I saw that amusing Hi5 clip Jalima a bit like the equally hilarious one of TM trying to distance herself from the amazing Lord Buckethead! www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZxZlSZrPeQ

TM ungraciously refused to applaud for any other candidates.I love our democracy because she had to stand with all those eccentric candidates and look po faced! She was also pissed off because Elmo had the same outfit as her. Why is she wearing so much red?? It does not fool the labour voters.

Other than her mispronunciation of 'Treesa' the returning officer managed to keep a sense of decorum. I so wish she hadn't! grin

Jalima1108 Fri 09-Jun-17 18:01:29

She does seem to like that red suit

POGS Fri 09-Jun-17 18:45:37

Corbyn was asked the question re Sinn Fein actually.

www.pressgazette.co.uk/labours-emily-thornberry-press-should-be-allowed-to-ask-questions-no-matter-how-stupid

Labour's Emily Thornberry: 'Press should be allowed to ask questions, no matter how stupid'

Labour shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry accused Times political editor Francis Elliott of asking a “stupid question” at a press conference yesterday.

Elliott said: “How far are you prepared to go to keep Theresa May out of Number 10? Would it extend to, for instance, asking Sinn Fein members to take their seats…”

At this point loud jeers and boos erupted prompting Thornberry to restore order saying: “Alright, alright, everybody no, no, no, come on…we all agree we should have a free press, they should be allowed to ask questions, no matter how stupid [cheers and applause] and shouldn’t be booed, sorry Francis…”

POSTAL VOTES

Sorry this might seem insensitive, but I am curious to know....

If an elderly and frail person, or any other person for that matter, sends in a postal vote and then actually dies before the date of the election, is that vote still counted?

any ideas on this - because some of the seats are now extremely close, only a 2 vote majority in one seat, and the dead voting could make a difference.....

durhamjen Fri 09-Jun-17 18:52:15

That was a week ago, along with this.

'She then went on to give the most clarification yet on what Labour’s position would be in the case of a hung Parliament (suggesting that the question was not quite as stupid as she suggested): “If we end up in a position where we are in a minority, we will go ahead and put forward a Queen’s Speech and a budget.

“If people want to vote for it, then good. If they don’t want to vote for it, they are going to have to go back and speak to their constituents and explain to them why it is that we have a Tory government instead. If we are the largest party we go ahead — no deals — with our manifesto, our budget and our Queen’s Speech.” '
