Awful news, just seen this on the news.
Thoughts with everyone involved including firefighters

An excellent article by Polly Toynbee Jen. This in particular:

That tower is austerity in ruins. Symbolism is everything in politics and nothing better signifies the May-Cameron-Osborne era that stripped bare the state and its social and physical protection of citizens. The horror of poor people burned alive within feet of the country’s grandest mansions, many of them empty, moth-balled investments, perfectly captures the politics of the last seven years. The Cameron, Osborne, Gove Notting Hill set live just up the road.

I was watching CNN today and they were appalled at the way the victims families are being kept out of the loop and being told nothing.

There will be trouble if they don't pull their act together

Something is afoot at Kensington town hall. Looks like the people have a point to make. Whatever happens now this cannot be brushed under the carpet.

durhamjen Fri 16-Jun-17 16:43:31

Have you seen the protest at the town hall. They are saying that some people don't have anywhere to sleep.

There are high rises all over the world, and fires in them, but it does seem that this building went up like a torch ( indicating the cladding was a problem...or the fitting of it.) An external fire escape would be of no use ( too high anyway) would sprinklers have helped, unknown, but hope the investigation finds the reason quickly and then the government can act in all the cases of other clad high rises.
I lived in a concrete (pebble dashed) high rise once, no cladding, it's still there, maybe doesn't look as attractive but safety comes first.
Must say, that although it would have been better for T May to talk to survivors,
She would have come in for a hard time even though it isn't her fault, simply because she represents the Government.Corbyn is the Opposition, so wouldn't be yelled at, and neither would the Queen.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:09:27

What the hell do the authorities expect?

grumppa Fri 16-Jun-17 17:10:03

Kensington Council have handed this appallingly. I am sure they are working hard to sort out immediate accommodation, etc. problems, but neither the leading Councillors nor the leading officials have shown their faces to the people. Total communications cock-up.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:13:11

It starts at the top with May and the Tory Council are behaving in the same way.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:15:05

I would fervently hope that May would come in for a hard time, as it's the only thing that seems to get through her thick skull.

This is an Austerity Disaster and it is laid at the Tories door.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 16-Jun-17 17:17:38

Watching the protesters at the council building. It seems to have grown in numbers very quickly - they think it is people coming over from the flats area.

They surged forward and tried to gain access to the building but were turned back.

One arrest has been made apparently.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:20:28

Sheer lack of social housing -an utter scandal.

Nick Clegg reported that the Tories will not build social housing as it creates Labour Voters

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:24:23

I hope that the trouble won't be used by the right wing gutter press to turn people's sympathy away from the Grenfill victims and families.

durhamjen Fri 16-Jun-17 17:24:43

I remember reading that, whitewave.

Cutting red tape in construction. Look at who is involved.

Gavin Barwell's response.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 16-Jun-17 17:39:27

It will all begin to come out now Jen.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:40:23

The folk want information about the dead. I think that they could at least start with an official list of the missing. They have much more information than they are giving out. I don't think there is any conspiracy tbh I just think it is incompetence and not knowing what to do next.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:42:50

Yes I saw Barwell -that ex member of Parliament whom the voters rejected but May in her arrogance ignored an brought him back to a non job - on Sky - embarrassing to say the least.

durhamjen Fri 16-Jun-17 17:43:51

They don't know what to do next because there are too many involved. Criminal manslaughter. The police are already looking into it.

TriciaF Fri 16-Jun-17 17:51:27

The situation is truly awful. But instead of looking to find who's to blame we/they should be looking at how to stop this kind of thing ever happening again.
Too many people live in London. Full Stop.

Anniebach Fri 16-Jun-17 17:55:24

Terrifying, brings the Brixton riots to mind

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:55:52

The trouble is there is sufficient housing it is just so much of it is owned by foreigners for property speculation, and empty.

I would have thought the shard could have held quite a few homeless.

whitewave Fri 16-Jun-17 17:57:16

I hope there aren't individuals egging these poor folk on.

Anniebach Fri 16-Jun-17 17:59:20

There will be Whitewave

TriciaF Fri 16-Jun-17 17:59:39
