I used to be in special ed. years ago and the children were often sent to the South Coast to be housed away from their parents who were for various reasons unable to cope with them at home. So it made it very difficult for those parents to keep contact with their child

Wilma I agree very much with you. In her statement which I read on Sunday, TM did say quite quite ckearly that the initial response( first few days) had not been good enough - and that initial response was down to K&C which has the highest paid council leader in the country. Secondly, I agree with you about people's fears for the future being predicated upon lived experience s from the past. London boroughs have form for rehousing people far far away from family, friends and social and support networks. I think campaigners are right to be putting down markers about not wanting this to happen with GT people. If they didn't put it on the agenda, who knows what would happen once the spotlight moves on?

My opposing view is that after a shaky start when the community was doing all it could to help, government help was then forthcoming, and I do not go along with all the political point scoring surrounding this saying that the residents are on the scrap heap so to speak and that they will be stiched up and it's all the fault of austerity and the Tories etc etc.
We do not know all the facts yet.

I wouldn't disagree with how hard it is for survivors of a disaster.

As to the relocating of homes, I doubt anybody actually chose to live in that tower, it was allocated to them by the council, just as new homes will be.They will hopefully be in better places .

Sorry roses, but we're not on the same page with this. I have no confidence in the victims being treated correctly, not when it comes to delivering. Right now it's just the information gathering stage of everyone's requirements and needs. Meeting those is a completely different matter and I think this government will slowly but surely backtrack on what it says now. I also think austerity and other Tory policies underpin this tragedy. I will watch for the back sliding and cover up attempts.

They are indeed. I live quite near Stansted Airport. Apparently hijacked planes are directed to land here. Every so often, we have practice emergency procedures, which involve local villages. We also managed to accommodate a plane of Lebanese refugees a few years ago. It's the council's responsibility. From reading social media, the reaction in K & C was chaotic, which followed on years of complaints and concerns. It's not surprising that "chinese whispers" went into overdrive.

I think that we all know that May cant be held personally responsible. But she can be responsible for her behaviour and incompetence.

Having seen enough about people dealing with councils illegally trying to make partners, spouses and children sell the houses they are living in to pay for an elderly relatives care I imagine there is at least a grain of truth in that and an awful lot of spin.

rosesarered Have you ever heard of "survivor guilt"? Many people who have managed to escape from a terrible disaster do not walk away emotionally unscathed. They will experience terrifying flashbacks and feelings of guilt that they did not, or could not, help others who perished while they lived. This is a common psychological reaction and the firefighters are experiencing those same feelings.

I can't imagine how distressing it must be to have experienced such a terrible event and then to realise that you have no home and no idea where and when you are likely to be permanently re-located, and no power to influence that decision.

The PM is not personally responsible for the response to a disaster such as this, it is the Council's responsibility to respond and they are required to have systems in place to enable them to do so.
