Former leadership rival Owen Smith appointed to Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary in Jeremy Corbyn’s reshuffle

Announcing the changes to his Shadow Cabinet, Mr Corbyn said: “I am delighted to announce four appointments to fill shadow cabinet vacancies. I look forward to working with the strengthened shadow cabinet as we prepare a government in waiting to carry out our manifesto for the many not the few.

Actually, I might be wrong in my interpretation of the meaning of 'breeding' in someone elses' post. Perhaps it was in a political context - after all, Blair and Brown could be considered Labour Party aristocracy (or Grandees)

Anniebach Tue 11-Jul-17 17:04:47

Oh, thank you primrose

Anniebach Tue 11-Jul-17 17:12:04

I seem to have confused things, whilst breeding is the usual term for the aristocracy, to me it means how a person was brought up, my great aunt is to blame , someone speaking or behaving in an inappropriate manner she dismissed as 'lack of good breeding '

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:16:47

Well I'm with ilove and I don't understand the use of it in conversation because it's a pathetic outdated concept ( other than when used with animals). GOK what ab meant when she used it first on this thread. Just another go at JC/JM probably. I think using words properly and challenging the misuse of words is far from boring in fact - what I do get bored with on GN is the Humpty Dumpty approach to the use and meaning of words

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:18:50

well maybe you should update your language ab and anyway, why should breeding apply to the aristocracy? Or any group of people? Utter claptrap

Anniebach Tue 11-Jul-17 17:25:21

No need to update my language Rigsby, i dislike foul language so certaintly will not suddenly start doing a McDonald

Primrose65 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:36:17

Not sure what's meant by the Humpty Dumpty approach in this context - no one was manipulating the meaning of anything....Perhaps there should be a separate thread where people can discuss words and phrases, whether they are appropriate or not etc. It's not the most pressing issue in politics imo.

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:44:03

Wow - just found out what aristocratic good breeding means - posting malicious communications on fb - well done the 4th Viscount ST Davids.

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:48:57

Here's the flavour of his inherited good manners ' £5000 for the first person to 'accidentally' run over this bloody troublesome first generation immigrant' . Bet his nanny is terribly proud of him . And bless - he's been bankrupt 3 times and has a criminal conviction for financial mismanagement

Primrose65 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:49:14

Well I'm off to Portcullis House now to talk politics with real politicians - very exciting as it's not a run of the mill activity for me! Very happy to report back tomorrow if anyone is interested.

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:51:29

Which politicians and about what?

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 17:51:52

What's a real politician btw?

rosesarered Tue 11-Jul-17 20:35:26

Yes, Primrose.... yes, tell us what happened.smile

durhamjen Tue 11-Jul-17 20:50:22

I was wondering that, Rigby.
A real politician as opposed to.....?

I bet it's a Tory fundraising.

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 21:11:17

dj grin

Eloethan Tue 11-Jul-17 21:28:27

primrose You refer to "trivial" issues but the triviality emanates from those with whom you agree. Since you were so keen to tell people you are off to Portcullis House to meet some "real politicians", perhaps you would like to enlighten us as to who they are.

The state of Seamus Milne's marriage is nothing to do with anybody except his wife and family. Had he been prominent in passing judgment on the sexual behaviour of others, then perhaps it would be natural that he be criticised but, as far as I'm aware, he confines himself to political issues. There must on this site alone be hundreds of people who view or post on it, who have had extra-marital affairs or who are in their second or third marriages. Who has the right to pass judgment on them? Nobody, in my opinion.

Is it really being suggested that someone who has an affair should lose his or her job or be ostracised? If that were to be the case, I would imagine a fair percentage of people would find themselves unemployed and shunned by the "righteous".

I think there is a world of difference between swearing about something or someone and swearing at someone. But it seems because Jess Phillips is vehemently anti-Corbyn, it was seen as rather amusing for her to tell a left winger to "fuck off". I also think that, whilst continual swearing can be off-putting, there are far worse things that a person can do.

I know people of very modest means and education who I would consider are decent and respectful of others - what might be described as "well mannered". In fact I have a fairly ordinary background myself and would like to think I am generally quite good mannered. It has nothing whatsoever to do with class, employment status, money - or lineage (as Rigby's post re the Viscount so clearly demonstrates). In the grand scheme of things, however, charm and impeccable manners can be fairly superficial social devices and do not necessarily indicate a genuine care and respect for other human beings.

Primrose65 Tue 11-Jul-17 22:09:47

You'll never guess who was holding his parliamentary constituency party post-election jolly in Portcullis House this evening !!!
There was no escaping JC for me today grin

I was only sharing my trip because, for me, it is exciting to participate politically. I don't get the chance to talk to MPs regularly, so for me it was a big deal to go to a meeting with some of them there. I can see I was naive in doing that.

Is anyone else here politically active locally/regionally? Or is it just online forums like this one?

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 22:22:52

Is the Pope a Catholic and do bears......

durhamjen Tue 11-Jul-17 22:23:24

Interesting post Eloethan.
With regard to the viscount who is likely to get a prison sentence, why is he castigated as someone whose crime was racist, yet acid attacks on Muslims, of which there have been over 80 in the last year, are not classed as terrorism, just grievous bodily harm?

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 22:23:39

And do you mean party politically active or politically active?

daphnedill Tue 11-Jul-17 22:32:17

There was a talk on the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act at Portcullis House this evening. Did you pop in to find out about real sexual offences rather than a grope outside a cafe?

whitewave Tue 11-Jul-17 22:53:09

Why hasnt that twerp Viscount been done for incitment to murder?

Primrose65 Tue 11-Jul-17 22:56:22

Why would acid attacks on anyone be classified as terrorism durhamjen? Have I missed some evidence that they are politically motivated?

Rigby46 Tue 11-Jul-17 23:14:53

Well acid attacks per se could be terroist attacks - the question is whether a specific attack is. The one on the two cousins we don't know about yet do we in terms of motivation - haven't they just arrested someone?

Primrose65 Tue 11-Jul-17 23:20:14

Yes Rigby46, I suppose it's all down to the motivation behind each specific attack. And yes, he was in court today.
