Former leadership rival Owen Smith appointed to Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary in Jeremy Corbyn’s reshuffle

Announcing the changes to his Shadow Cabinet, Mr Corbyn said: “I am delighted to announce four appointments to fill shadow cabinet vacancies. I look forward to working with the strengthened shadow cabinet as we prepare a government in waiting to carry out our manifesto for the many not the few.

durhamjen Have the acid attacks on Muslims been proved to be politically/racially/religiously motivated? I believe at least some of them are carried out by or on behalf of spurned ex-partners or angry family members. Acid attacks are more common in Asian countries.

Grievous bodily harm is a serious offence which I assume can carry a high prison sentence but I'm not sure what the maximum is. I'm not a great believer in prison but in cases of extreme violence I think sentences should be lengthy.

Incitement to murder needs to be punished to dissuade others from this type of behaviour.

That's massively offensive daphnedill on so many levels.
Shame on you - you've embarrassed yourself.

Anniebach Wed 12-Jul-17 17:47:30

Daphne, do you really believe women do not know the difference between a hand on their bum or being subjected to sexual assault, your post was shameful and insulting to women

"In the recent acid attack in Beckton, East London, Jameel Muhktar and his cousin Resham Khan were left with life-changing injuries when a man threw acid through their car window as they sat in traffic. Although treated as a hate crime, Muhktar suggested that had the perpetrator been Asian and the victims an English couple, it would be classed as a terror attack."

Iam64 Wed 12-Jul-17 18:25:42

I don't know the statistics on acid attacks but eloethan is right to say these attacks have traditionally been more common within the Asian countries. As in those countries, such attacks historically been more likely to occur in the contact of so called honour/ family feuds.
In recent years, acid attacks have happened when a spurned boyfriend of whatever creed or colour has attacked a former partner.
Radio 4 news interviewed gang members, again all creeds and colours about the increase in gang related acid attacks. The gang members explained if they were found to be carrying a knife, they'd get a serous sentence, It seems the law currently has little response to those found carrying acid because it has legal purpose. In addition, acid attacks are less dangerous to the perpetrator than knowing fe attacks, you don't have to get up close to do significant danage.
Just beyond awful isn't it.

I am sure their will be times when we disagree but I really don't think this attempt to 'shame' someone is very GN - is it?

GracesGranMK2 Wed 12-Jul-17 18:28:45

there not their - can you hear my scream?

whitewave Wed 12-Jul-17 18:35:03

No gg I didn't notice

JC is going to ask about the possibility of remaining should Brexit become impossible, when he sees Barnier.

Anniebach Wed 12-Jul-17 18:46:32

I agree GG, Daphne not have have made light of something as serious as sexual assault

Anniebach Wed 12-Jul-17 18:50:51

Corbyn and the first ministers of Scotland and Wales are to meet Barnier but he said he will only discuss the details with the government , bit of an insult to include an oposition leader with two First Ministers though

whitewave Wed 12-Jul-17 19:01:39

Thought Thornberry was excellent on pmqs today.

Green "We are saying it is still possible that we will be offered a punishment deal and that would be worse than a no deal"

(How!? The fact that the EU will treat us like a third country? Er, yes)

Thornberry "well, the Prime Minister can hardly storm out of the room refusing the deal and then pop her head back around the floor and ask if she could have two more years to prepare"

grin. Love it!

durhamjen Wed 12-Jul-17 19:10:35

My grandson said, "Emily's good, isn't she? Nearly as good as Corbyn."

GracesGranMK2 Wed 12-Jul-17 19:32:58

No Annie. Are you really that stupid. I meant you trying to shame other people.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 12-Jul-17 19:37:30

Emily Thornberry was very good wasn't she - as I notice are several of the women on the Labour front bench.

Whitewave - that certainly seems a question that should be askedsmile Where did you hear that?

whitewave Wed 12-Jul-17 19:45:02

gg in the paper this morning which is now in the recycling bin at the back of the garden so can't tell you which article it was in. Sorry!!

Primrose65 Wed 12-Jul-17 19:49:21

GG What outcome are you looking for with ad hominem attacks?
Ironic on the day Diane Abbott talks about abuse online.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 12-Jul-17 19:58:26

It was not an ad hominem argument Primrose. What I said was "...but I really don't think this attempt to 'shame' someone is very GN - is it?"

I don't think it is, do you?

Anniebach Wed 12-Jul-17 20:00:17

GG, not stupid, just don't often notice bubbling cauldrons etc

GracesGranMK2 Wed 12-Jul-17 20:02:46

Of course Primrose, the first attempt to 'shame' was an ad hominem argument - but I didn't see you comment on that did you?

Primrose65 Wed 12-Jul-17 20:05:34

Sorry GG.
"Are you really that stupid."
It's an ad hominem attack.

I don't think someone using sexual abuse to poke fun at anyone is appropriate on any forum.

durhamjen Wed 12-Jul-17 20:07:38

Barnier did not say he would only discuss details with the government. He said he could only negotiate with the government - quite a difference.
Rightwing newspapers up in arms because he is having a meeting lasting 2.5 hours with Corbyn, Wood and Sturgeon.

petra Wed 12-Jul-17 20:08:37

GracesGran MK2
It was reported in the Daily Express and The Sun. Perhaps that's where WhiteWave read it.

whitewave Wed 12-Jul-17 20:10:13

Well he probably got more sense from that 2 hour meeting then he ever has from the Brexit crew
