Luciana Berger who is chair of the Jewish Labour Movement was re-elected in Liverpool with a majority of nearly 33,000

Momentum activists took nine of ten positions in the LP, one new official has said Berger is now answerable to us!

I thought an MP was answerable to her constituency

Bringing up The naming of a Tory MP's child on a thread discussing Momentum was a diversion? Surely not !

durhamjen Sat 08-Jul-17 08:40:36

Some of us are worried that the Tories want Moggmentum to be the next PM.
Is that allowed in your world, roses?

durhamjen Sat 08-Jul-17 08:39:25

How do you know anyone is emulating momentum?
Have you been to any meetings?

rosesarered Sat 08-Jul-17 08:35:37

What comes over on all the political threads is the reaction of left wing posters to try and close down discussion......when others are criticising something 'of the left'
( in this case Momentum) when many Labour voters are worried about Momentums methods. So, we get comments like 'I went to a meeting and found them all lovely' ( well, you would, wouldn't you) or trying to counter comments about Momentum with ( ridiculously) complaints about the names of Rees Moggs children.Ooh, look, he's a toff, he gives his children posh funny names.etc.
In behaving this way, posters are emulating Momentum.Nobody must be a critic of their ways, all must toe the line at all times or there will be consequences.
We should all be critics where we see that it's deserved, of any Party or group within a Party or an individual ( but not because their child is named Sixtus or because they live in a large house.)

There's already a de-selection/Momentum-bashing thread but,to those who are presenting members of Momentum as if they are the devil incarnate, here's a repeat of what I said on it:

I actually went to a Momentum meeting for the first time the other day to see if the stories about these rabble-rousing young hooligans was true.

In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to find that of the people there - about 80 or so I would think - I would say at least 65% were aged 40 and above. I met a member of my choir there - a former Health Visitor who in retirement has campaigned tirelessly for our local hospital. I did not see any of the sort of dirty deeds that the right wing tabloid press likes to talk about. The discussion was mostly about seeking the opinions and suggestions of people within the borough in order to take on board the local and national issues that are of importance to them.

Labour Party members and supporters sometimes voted for candidates with whom, as individuals, they disagreed. An exsmple is the Labour candidate who sent a letter to voters encouraging them to elect her “whatever your misgivings about the Labour leadership” - because she expected Corbyn would not become prime minister. I think many Labour members voted Labour despite this woman, not because of her, and it is hardly surprising that people who have constantly tried to undermine an elected leader - even during an election - don't inspire confidence and aren't particularly popular.

The reason the right wing press is demonising Momentum is because they can see it is effective. Had it been a small movement that generated no interest and posed no threat to the Conservative machine, they would have either ignored it or had a fleeting snigger about it.

whitewave Fri 07-Jul-17 22:56:23

Nothing would surprise me these days i suppose but he does have the faint whiff

durhamjen Fri 07-Jul-17 22:54:58

'Now I turn to this place. This building is intimidating. It reeks of the establishment and of power. Its systems are confusing, some may say archaic, and it was built at a time when my class and my sex would have been denied a place within it because we are deemed unworthy.'

Rees-Mogg fits in well.

Yes has always been a strong supporter of Farage as leader of ukip, and or course Trump.

He reminds me of the sort of interwar upper class sort that supported the Nazis.
Im sure he wouldnt be quite so stupid as that though.

Tegan2 Fri 07-Jul-17 22:32:12

'He joined former Ukip leader and Brexit orchestrator Nigel Farage in indicating his support for Mr Trump ahead of November’s US presidential election.'this from a BBC4 interview with Rees Mogg. This is when I first really started to detest him....

Tegan2 Fri 07-Jul-17 22:17:06

As with Boris Johnson, I used to feel amused that we had such colourful characters in British politics. But when I see people like that in power and turning this country into a place that I don't recognise I don't find it amusing any more. The pair of them are great on HIGNFY, but shouldn't be running the country.

whitewave Fri 07-Jul-17 22:12:34

He has always been up himself. He had himself painted during his last year at Eton. Its just of him in a junior outfit. Not sure if this means that he was so mediocre that he didnt acquire a single colour or he prefered rather strangely for an 18 year old to be painted as a first year.
Extraordinarily weird

Tegan2 Fri 07-Jul-17 22:01:38

Wouldn't surprise me if it was sold in a tax evasion sort of way. But can anyone defend him for not wanting public sector employees to have a decent pay rise? Which is more important.

whitewave Fri 07-Jul-17 22:00:08

ana it wasnt a put downshock it was faint praisesmile

whitewave Fri 07-Jul-17 21:58:43

You may be interested but not surprised to know tegan that Mogg recently gave a speech to Traditional Great Britain. A fascist group with Tory ideas about the countryside.

His present abode is the 57 bedroom Gournay Court.
Well he's doing his level best to fill themgrin

Darnsarf Fri 07-Jul-17 21:51:15

And your posts haven't been up to your usual standard either ww. Far too much patronising and silly childish comments about the names of babies. A little light on actual facts, which you're always so adamant is what the News and Politics threads are for. hmm

Ana Fri 07-Jul-17 21:48:51

Oh dear whitewave, what a poor put-down attempt...

M0nica Fri 07-Jul-17 21:45:55

Tegan2. The story about Jacob Rees-Mogg and his 'family mansion' was fake news. the house concerned is Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire, the largest stately home in England, I believe. It was bought recently by a specially formed Preservation Trust, a charity, who were awarded this money to help restore the house . JRM's only connection with it is that is the ancestral home of his MiL and she is involved with the trust.

Nowadays you need always to carefully fact check news items before you disseminate them.

whitewave Fri 07-Jul-17 21:44:48

Excellent postsgg

Good one liner ana not quite up to your usual standard, but well done for trying

tegan too right

Tegan2 Fri 07-Jul-17 21:39:53

Well, I think that Rees Mogg pretty much sums up all that stinks about the Conservative party.

Ana Fri 07-Jul-17 21:38:52

'Screams'? Ha, ha!
