How much will a flight cost after Brexit?

With Ryan Air stating that it may not fly to the EU from Britain after Brexit and easyjet setting up an operation in Austria are we looking towards a time when there will be no cheap flights to EU countries?

whitewave Sat 15-Jul-17 14:48:33

It does well to listen to what he is saying though.

varian Sat 15-Jul-17 14:47:10

It's just a pity that he is saying it and not a well respected leader saying it.

VIOLETTE Sat 15-Jul-17 14:42:03

For once I love what Tony Blair is saying today CANCEL BREXIT ......yipee the first sensible piece of advice so far ......grin

Oldwoman70 Sat 15-Jul-17 14:40:27

petra If that is the case isn't the person who works in the department/departments breaking confidentiality? I seem to recall civil servants have to sign some sort of form in that respect.

We have at least one member who loves to inform us that she knows someone in this department/ that department.

I suppose what it comes down to is: some of us are optimists and some are pessimists. I'm very fortunate to be a former because I've learnt in life that most 'problems' usually turn out ok.

Oldwoman70 Sat 15-Jul-17 14:18:52

WKF Do you really think the "government" actually read the various forums to find out what the people are worried about? If you want that to happen lobby your MP.

With all due respect to those posting on here, I am amazed at how many of you are such experts able to predict what the results of the negotiations will be. You are obviously privy to information that the rest of us are not.

Welshwife Sat 15-Jul-17 14:17:37

Petra we do live in France and normally drive/ferry back to Uk but we do have family and friends on three other continents where a car ferry us not possible. When these family members visit they have more family members in UK than us here.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 15-Jul-17 14:11:09

There's a lot of sarcastic posts on that article rose, some of them quite clever.

In no way do I want the negotiations to fail. What does bother me is the nobody knows responses on here. Nobody knows does not have to go hand in hand with so why worry? or we can't do anything about it.

Expressing your views and showing an interest in what is happening now will send messages to the government about what is important to us, what worries us.

There's no doubt that in 10 or 20 years time we'll have established trade agreements again, but until that happens we will live through times where standard tarrifs will be charged on trade. This will mean you and I will pay higher cosst for anything not produced in the UK. Then, when each new trade agreement is signed after several years of negotiations, prices might drop again (and lots of back patting will go on).

As one of the younger members on GN and living at the lower end of the income scale, I don't think anyone has the right to tell me what is and is not scaremongering.

petra Sat 15-Jul-17 14:02:45

Welshwife
I see that you have said you hope it is scaremongering as otherwise it would make it difficult to see your family.
I thought you lived in France, how can that be difficult?

rosesarered Sat 15-Jul-17 13:51:25

Oh wkf......glad that they are not your own comments , they are from some idiot
Who thinks he is a wag on that particular link.

petra Sat 15-Jul-17 13:49:28

What a shame that the negotiations couldn't be handeled by business men and women instead of bureaucrats and politicians. People who understand what makes the world go round: money, you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.
Simples!!

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 15-Jul-17 13:46:18

From the comments on the link to the article about easyjet

What you fail to understand is that the UK can have its cake and eat it. The economies of the other member states are so dependent upon trading with us that they will give us whatever we demand. And we will have £350million per week to fun the NHS. Also we won't have to put up with all those nasty foreigners who have the temerity to come over here to keep our essential services running. Is this not so or have I been told a load of lies?

We will be at the controls of our own aircraft. Who cares that we've not had any flying lessons.

^Do all the pro eu posters want to see negotiations fail just to be proven right'
Yes, many do.

Welshwife Sat 15-Jul-17 13:38:42

Bright flights did not stop because at that time there was no cheap carrier and there also was no Open Skies agreement - just as they companies worked on their own and did not have agreements with other airlines to 'share' passengers. Today you can book on one airlines site and find that you are actually flying with a totally different one!

rosesarered Sat 15-Jul-17 13:31:46

Good post ican smile

Oldwoman70 Sat 15-Jul-17 13:27:23

Stella - do you really want all flights to Europe to stop just so you can say I told you so! Wow!!

There are several countries who have already stated they will enter into trade agreements with UK once we have left the EU. Many EU companies will also want to continue trading with UK. Do all the pro-EU posters want to see negotiations fail just to be proven right?

icanhandthemback Sat 15-Jul-17 13:22:15

Well said Day 6. There is still a concerted attempt to stop Brexit so these scary stories are played out to the public to see if they can change things. There is a possibility that an agreement will not be in place but I don't think that it will come to that because it is not in anybody's interest regardless of which country you come from. I'm sure there will be some adverse effects of Brexit when it comes to flying but there will probably be some good things too. If RyanAir and EasyJet remove themselves from GB, it won't be long before somebody else steps into their shoes.
When Brexiteers talked about taking back control, they weren't talking about the general public having control, they were talking about our Courts, our Parliament, etc. They were talking about accountability of those bodies (maybe the accounts can be signed off!) I am not anti immigration per se, I am not anti being part of a trading community or having close links to Europe but until the EU is a proper democratic institution, I don't want to be a part of it. The UK's democracy is certainly questionable sometimes but certainly a better bet than the EU's as far as I am concerned. Wouldn't it be lovely too to ensure that our Politicians are responsible for their decisions rather than blaming the EU!

rosesarered Sat 15-Jul-17 13:07:34

Of course they won't come to a grinding halt......who really think that?A show of hands please.

rosesarered Sat 15-Jul-17 13:06:27

Or the flights.

Biggirlsdontcry Sat 15-Jul-17 13:04:48

I didn't notice the fights stopping when we went into the Common Market.!!

rosesarered Sat 15-Jul-17 13:04:25

Well said Day6......if only the gloom and doom merchants put as much effort in remaining positive it would really 'lift' the country.

Kim19 Sat 15-Jul-17 13:01:29

Day6, your level headed and positive perspective are quite inspirational. Thank you. I agree with you 100 per cent. It's not very often that something worth achieving comes with ease. I'm steeling myself for the actual downsides as and when they come but I am equally awaiting the positives and will embrace them with gusto. grandMattie, your suggested compassionate approach also resonates with me big time. If only........!

You've both been a chink of light to me on a somewhat gloomy outlook here and mostly based on....... speculation....... Hallelujah!

trisher Sat 15-Jul-17 12:57:42

Thanks Welshwife for explaining that it is not about 'wanting' to stop flights but about an agreement not being made by the government in time and how much that agreement will cost.

sunseeker Sat 15-Jul-17 12:45:37

Easyjet and Ryanair will still have hubs in UK airports - if they didn't they would not be able to supply so many flights and that would hit their profits.
