Very much needed.

First happy thing to report.

Unison have won their case making it illegal to charge employees for employment litigation. Introduced by the Tories in 2013.

The judges quite rightly said it was wrong to make it difficult/impossible for anyone to resort to law.

Those who paid will be reimbursed.

Theresa May criticised Corbyn in her speech, then criticised Laura Pidcock for saying she could not be friends with a Tory.
Not very friendly.

dbDB77 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:27:05

I watched the whole speech - was not surprised that the BBC & ITV news both concentrated on the few minutes of coughing & the heckler rather than the body of the speech. It's what they think is "newsworthy" rather than informing the viewers.
I've read the comments against TM & understand what people are saying but the tenor of her speech & the conference response seemed measured & thoughtful in contrast to JC's speech at the Labour conference & the reaction to it, which reminded me of film clips I've seen of the Nuremberg rallies.

When someone is using an argument, they resurrect Hitler. Shame on you db but then you have to detract attention from the fact that most of the ideas in her speech were lifted from Labour ideas.

maryeliza54 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:33:19

Losing of course not using

maryeliza54 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:35:22

Where was her sense of duty when she called a totally unnecessary election for her own benefit?

dbDB77 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:37:23

What argument? I'm merely commenting as an observer who's not affiliated to either of the parties. Surely observations are allowed on Gransnet?

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 22:37:48

Few minutes of coughing?
At times it looked like she wasn't going to be able to finish it.

Nuremberg rallies?
That's a weird comparison. Corbyn was inside a hall, talking to a few hundred supporters. I didn't see any helmets or uniforms.
Corbyn wouldn't have those anyway.
He gets accused by the Tories of wanting to get rid of the army, then accused of looking like he's talking to a Nuremberg rally?
I think you need to have a look at those film clips again.

Florence Welch has now tweeted that had they asked for permission to play her music at the Conference it would have been refused. It just goes from bad to worse.

db you clearly don't like JC, don't like the fact that Labour had a good conference and so bring in Hitler - I think that's an absolutely shocking thing to do and in fact cheapens the whole utter unspeakable horror of Nazism. How could anyone with any sense of history and understanding of the Second World War make that comparison? I'm shocked that you could do that, I really am.

maryeliza54 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:50:57

Well didn't Amber Rudd do well with Eddie Mair on PM. The Tories are clearly spoilt for choice for their next leader.

Anniebach Wed 04-Oct-17 22:53:36

the rallies for Corbyn has always reminded me of the hysteria which gripped Germany,

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 22:53:53

The only minister at Boris's speech yesterday was Michael Gove. I knew May wasn't there, but hadn't realised none of the others were there.

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 22:55:17

Someone else who has no sense of history.

maryeliza54 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:55:59

Then ab you don't know your history either and you are also demeaning the horror of Nazism.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 04-Oct-17 22:57:53

So, let's look at what the TV news is reporting and the papers will be reporting tomorrow. It happened and I am afraid we cannot wind back time and change it just so her fans can feel good.

It was a car crash. No one could blame anyone for having a cough. The poor women had done so many interviews pre the speech and her voice had held up, so I feel very sorry for her. The stunt with the P45 was what it was. If you are pro the Tory Party you will think it quite dreadful and obviously the fault of the comedian but what on earth were her security guys doing? The last, and what seemed slightly like an act of God, were the letters falling off the set behind her from the "Building a country that works for everyone", jerry building in this case, sadly. I'm afraid you couldn't have scripted it.

I think TM was receiving some compassion on here from those who abhor her policies dbDB77 and all you can do is lash out - sad, very sad.

I imagine that tomorrow they, and we, will discuss the speech but there is no good hiding from the fact that it was an ill attended conference, which many MPs chose not to go to, and that one member of the cabinet seems to have set out to undermine, which ended with a high level of incompetence surrounding the leader as she gave her speech.

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 23:00:59

Maryeliza, did you watch Who do You Think You Are tonight, with Ruby Wax?
She never knew anything about her family, even her parents escaping from Austria. Her mother never told her she was still in Vienna at Kristallnacht.

maryeliza54 Wed 04-Oct-17 23:08:38

No I didn't watch it dj but you could imagine that people with family connections to this period of history ( and I know quite a few) would find it utterly sickening and vile the comparisons made on this thread between Nazism and Corbyn.

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 23:12:40

I agree, maryeliza.

dbDB77 Wed 04-Oct-17 23:14:44

Maryeliza54 - I don't dislike JC - I commented on his speech and the reaction to it - the constant chanting & cheering (no matter what he said) & fists in the air - it reminded me of those Nuremberg rallies - and if you're shocked by my comment then I think you must be easily shocked.
I was shocked that at the Labour Party conference fringe they decided it's OK to deny the holocaust.

maryeliza54 Wed 04-Oct-17 23:21:02

The Holocaust was NOT denied at the Labour fringe meeting. And I am not easily shocked, but am by the comparison you made - you were at the Nuremberg rallies I assume and the Labour Conference? I take the evils of Nazism ( and its resurgence) very seriously indeed - as would anyone with any sense and understanding of it.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 04-Oct-17 23:24:33

I think the words 'don't feed' come to mind

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 23:27:09

Perhaps May was coughing all the time at the thought that she was repeating so much of Miliband's speech.
Even the British dream came from him as well as the energy price caps.
Corbyn's housing policy was borrowed, without giving him any kudos for it.

durhamjen Wed 04-Oct-17 23:37:36

Does anyone know what crime the lad who handed her the P45 committed? He was arrested and driven away in a police van.

GracesGranMK2 Wed 04-Oct-17 23:46:42

Apparently he was released without charge "after it emerged he had legitimate accreditation for the conference" Jen.
