Jews and racism

In the news this morning - one in three Jews are considering leaving the U.k because of racism.

83% believe the Labour Party are not doing enough to support them

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:08:34

If only 17% feel unwelcome, that means that 83% feel welcome. That's good news, surely.

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 10:10:56

Because the same people who are genuinely anti-semetic are usually the same people who promote racist attitudes in general Iam64 and to discuss a problem you need to look at the wider picture. As I have said the failure of the authorities to deal with the problem of Israel and its treatment of the Palestinians provides right wing groups with ammunition for their unacceptable views. It isn't right but it is happening.

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:14:36

You're post is unbelievable durham, shocking and unbelievable. sad

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:16:12

Well said, trisher. There are 263,000 Jews in the UK.
There are 3 million EU citizens, some of whom may be Jews.

I haven't said that it's acceptable for 17% of Jews to feel unwelcome, just that it's only a small part of the numbers of people who feel unwelcome since Brexit.

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:19:22

By the way, I hope you have all looked at the figures in the survey.
There are nearly as many people interviewed who do not know how many Jews they know. I don't know, do you?
I don't ask people if they are Jews, just so I can categorise them.

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:20:21

Chewbacca, what is unbelievable and shocking about saying that 83% of Jews feel welcome?

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:20:56

No it is not good news , in fact I found your dismissal of only 17% cruel, unfeeling and wondered if you would have said only 17% of Muslims , I doubt it

The many not the few ?

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:21:45

Stop back peddling Jen, you said ONLY 17% ,

maddyone Mon 21-Aug-17 10:24:36

One of two of the posts on here border on antisemitic themselves in my humble opinion! Anniebach, I'm with you all the way, you are right to be concerned about rising antisemitism in the UK (along with a fair few others who also show concern on this thread.)
The brick and the graffiti photos are truly horrific. The fact that many congregations of many synagogues feel the need to post guards outside their places of worship, or places where bad mitzvahs are taking place speaks for itself. I have visited a number of synagogues and a number of Jewish museums across Europe and often seen guards outside, I'm troubled that Jewish people now feel the need to do this in the UK. Antisemitism was a huge problem in mainland Europe in the recent past, hence the holocaust, but Britain was considered a safe place for those who are Jewish. How sad that British Jews feel they are no longer guaranteed here.

maddyone Mon 21-Aug-17 10:25:34

Or bar mitzvahs, it should have read

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:25:59

So we should look at the bigger picture ? 120 homes were destroyed in the tower fire, only 120 out of over four million social houses

maddyone Mon 21-Aug-17 10:27:06

Guarenteed safety here, I really should preview

illtellhim Mon 21-Aug-17 10:30:40

The jews tortured and murdered my Christ, please don't ever forget that.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:32:21

maddyone, that brick thrown through a window was so distressing . I am concerned by anti semitism and deeply concerned that it is increasing. Little wonder over 80% felt as they did about the Labour Party , as a member of that party I want to say the hard left do not speak for me

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:33:05

Durham your post shocked me because it was so dismissive. I cannot imagine you, or anyone else for that matter, saying that any other minority has 17% of their population feeling unwelcome in the UK, but 83% do feel welcome, "so that's good news ". Jews have been persecuted wherever they go, it's unacceptable that they are again being persecuted here and now. And to be so offhand about it is what shocked me. I've disagreed with many of your political opinions, but never your humanitarian views before. And you've left me feeling appalled.

Anniebach Mon 21-Aug-17 10:33:34

Christ was a .Jew, don't forget that

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 10:35:24

All those people who don't know how many Jews they know! And all those Jews who don't show publicly that they are Jews!

Then there are all those Muslim women who cover their heads. Everyone knows what THEIR religion is, so they are easily identified to any bigot stranger who wishes to attack them or revile them.

Now I wonder whether there is a correlation somewhere there?

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 10:36:23

Forgot the irony emoji (though we don't have one)

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:39:25

Even the much revered Gruanian has published details of anti semitism maybe this will add more gravitas

www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jun/12/jewish-restaurants-arson-attacks-manchester-police-taam-js

trisher Mon 21-Aug-17 10:40:42

We should look at all racism and all religious hate crime Anniebach Stop trying to be clever and derail yet another discussion simply because you can't find something to really disagree with. ALL hate crime is wrong. ALL people should feel welcome in the UK. NO-ONE should abused because of their race, ethnic origin, religion, or style of dress. Unfortunately many of them are and much of that crime is in London.
What we should be discussing is the rise of right wing extremism which threatens the safety of anyone from any culture they deem to be un-British. Anti-semitism is certainly part of that problem, but the nit picking indulged in by the Labour Party and others who refuse to condemn the racism in Israel fuels the ideas of these people and arguably is responsible for the more extreme anti semitism we are now seeing.

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 10:42:51

Illtellhim That accusation has been used against Jews from the beginning of Christianity and has been the excuse for hatred and at the root of endless pogroms! Airing it as a reason for it to be OK for "only 17%" of Jews to be in fear in a modern nation is quite inexcusable.

Chewbacca Mon 21-Aug-17 10:45:07

But this thread is about anti semitism trisher, didn't you notice the title at the top of the page? And it's being discussed, not derailed. Why do you think annie is derailing her own thread?

Elegran Mon 21-Aug-17 10:47:49

Trisher Durhamjen has already negated any talk of condemning ALL racial and religious abuse by implying that 17% is nothing to worry about. Please include her with Anniebach in your post.

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:48:55

Elegran, all those people who do not know how many jews they know?
The figures are in the bloody CAA report that you suggested we read before we say anything else. So I read it!
I thought it was a strange thing to ask, but they did.
Why are some figures acceptable to quote but not others?

durhamjen Mon 21-Aug-17 10:50:21

Anniebach, Christ was a vegetarian Jew. You wish to follow?
