Sovereignty and 'take back control'

In view of developments in Parliament over the past few days, such as the 'Henry VII' clause in the Repeal Bill and moves to give the government a majority in House of Commons Select committees , I am wondering just what people who voted Leave understand by the concept of 'Sovereignty' and if they are at all worried by the Government's attempts to bypass Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation and amendments to legislation?

The cost of this trip is a mere bagatelle compared to the £114 mil. a year, yes, a year wasted on the traveling circus, yet your quibbling at this cost when it's all our money.

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-17 18:27:12

I think kicking the can down the road for two years is as good as it gets at this stage.

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 18:27:41

Is that our share of the travelling circus?

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 18:29:31

mamie yes that's exactly what she has done.

What did you think of her "we have never been comfortable with Europe clanger?grin

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 18:33:08

And yet she spends just about every holiday in Europe.
She'd better stay at home for the next four years at least.

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-17 18:45:04

Whitewave I thought "speak for yourself, dear".

Mamie Fri 22-Sept-17 18:48:42

Was just grateful that it didn't cause the pound to plunge any further. Have now lost 20% of income since Brexit. ?

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 18:49:00

Yes, not in my name.

durhamjen Fri 22-Sept-17 18:51:09

That's bad, Mamie.

I wonder how much those with money in BVI tax havens have lost. Nothing, I bet, and they won't pay for the islands to be put right, either.

Tegan2 Fri 22-Sept-17 19:02:58

It's like a stab to my heart every time I am referred to as one of the 'people who have spoken'. To the day I die I will never accept the referendum result.

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 19:11:18

'Not comfortable in Europe' is exactly the position of the UK, so no clanger whitewave. All governments here have been a thorn in the side of the EU, we have never quietly done it's bidding.Otherwise we would have had the euro as currency and been part of the Schengen fiasco for starters.

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 19:12:17

Tegan2 you may never like it, but you will have to accept it.

loopyloo Fri 22-Sept-17 19:15:44

Sovereignty and taking back control is what people voted for. If there had not been such a scare campaign, how many more people would have voted to leave.

Being part of the E U creates dependency and policy is made by unelected individuals. We would become just a province.

Our parliament should get on and legislate for the UK. And if we don't like it we can vote them out.
If Mrs May fudges this, she is out as far as I am concerned.

petra Fri 22-Sept-17 19:16:43

We have never been European / part of Europe. If it hadn't of been for Ted Heath 'allegedly' being offered a nice little sweetener, it would never have happened.

Welshwife Fri 22-Sept-17 19:22:30

Many Europeans see the UK as putting a bit of moderation to ideas of the EU! They actually think the EU at times needs the moderating force. The U.K. Has at times been a thorn in the side but also one for good at making them re-evaluate things.
It was Churchill who had the vision of the EU to stop all the horrors of the wars he had witnessed and been a part of.

Welshwife Fri 22-Sept-17 19:24:36

I actually feel very European - something I did not feel 40 years ago - it is lovely to see people of other nationalities getting on well and helping each other. Why would you want to feel an outsider all the time except when on a small little island?

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 19:28:27

Goodness petra you are as bad as May in re writing history!!!

GracesGranMK2 Fri 22-Sept-17 19:33:44

Half the people didn't 'speak' in the way that these lier keep accrediting to them. I was part of that half and anything that delays and gives us the chance to rethink - at least about how we leave if we have to - is OK by me.

No one, lemongrove, has to accept anything just because you say so. This is realism setting in at long last. The opportunity to reverse policy is fundamental to any democracy. Your Brexit Bulldog, David Davis said “If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy” so let democracy continue.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 22-Sept-17 19:33:59

liers not lier

whitewave Fri 22-Sept-17 19:47:13

Anyone looked at twitter? The leavers are spitting blood - so perhaps the speech wasn't all badgrin

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 19:51:30

Well I suppose you can go to your death 'not accepting it' even though it has happened, (by then) but that would make your remaining years pretty miserable.
If you really think we are not leaving the UK, and that some policy will reverse it all, it may be a good idea to think again!

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 19:56:03

I am a Leaver whitewave and I am happy, you mustn't tar all Leavers with the same brush, and I promise not to tar all
Remainers either.
There was never just one way to Leave the EU, and what Mrs May said in her speech today sounds very sensible.
Perhaps UKIP voters feel differently.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 22-Sept-17 20:00:22

But what makes you so special lemongrove that you feel you can go round telling people they 'will have to accept it' when it has not yet happened?

lemongrove Fri 22-Sept-17 20:04:32

I will tell you another timewink it's tv time now.
