Sovereignty and 'take back control'

In view of developments in Parliament over the past few days, such as the 'Henry VII' clause in the Repeal Bill and moves to give the government a majority in House of Commons Select committees , I am wondering just what people who voted Leave understand by the concept of 'Sovereignty' and if they are at all worried by the Government's attempts to bypass Parliamentary scrutiny of legislation and amendments to legislation?

Colin Firth has done the right thing by taking Italian citizenship so he can be the same as his wife and children.
He can go to Italy on his Italian passport and move around without needing visas to go from one country to another.
He can live in Italy for three years, and then come back here with his British passport.
Sensible if you can afford it.

Thanks Ana, lemongrove & Ilovecheese
I didn't think a picture of Mr Darcy in his white shirt could be so contentious! I'll keep Colin Firth pictures for my own viewing pleasure in future grin

Would you have done the same if Annie had made the same mistake?

When's the Tory conference? Will there be anyone there?

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 07:48:33

I am so looking forward to the conference. I can imagine that they are working like lunatics to ensure a united front!!

But I can't see how anything they do will fool the electorate. They simply go from disaster to chaos and spiral ever downwards.

I watched part of the Labour one this morning with my grandson. Next week I will have to watch part of the Tory one and see if he can compare them.
Who do you suggest we watch?
Saw Dennis Skinner and Keir Starmer today, as well as bits of McDonnell and Thornberry.
Should we watch Ken Clarke to compare with Skinner?

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 15:03:19

My Aunt went to see a film about Skinner last week. She said it was really good

mostlyharmless Mon 25-Sept-17 15:05:45

Ken Clarke and Dennis Skinner - good comparison.

I notice that nobody has rocked the boat in Brighton yet (not even Dennis Skinner!)

What do people think about Emily Thornberry? A brilliant performer. But do we need more than that in a future leader?

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 15:32:40

She'd do well across the dispatch box. Formidable!

I suspect we are looking at the next Labour Leader

mostlyharmless Mon 25-Sept-17 15:41:08

Yes she has been very good at PMQ when Corbyn and May have been away.

mostlyharmless Mon 25-Sept-17 15:42:37

I think she would be a great Labour leader. My DH has doubts though.........

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 15:45:12

I have no doubts. I think she would be a brilliant leader and next PM after Corbyn.

mostlyharmless Mon 25-Sept-17 15:48:54

Undoubtedly better than our present Prime Minister!

GracesGranMK2 Mon 25-Sept-17 16:06:51

I'm not sure - but I don't think Labour are looking for a new leader yet smile

Have to agree with you though mostly but the bar for that one is not high.

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 16:11:58

That's why I said next after Corbyn.

I saw a talk by Andrew Gwynne yesterday and he's good, too.
He wrote about Boris not liking to be touched at all, so he likes doing it as much as possible just to annoy him.

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 16:35:50

I want to see that film, whitewave.
The problem is that all the tickets went quickly in Durham. Not surprisingly as it was in a bookshop.

Barnier warning that transition/extension will mean that the UK must continue to comply with all rules.

Brussels seems still to be tearing its hair out. I just hope Davis didn't fall asleep today, he looked very tired yesterday I thought and puffy eyed.

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 16:51:36

Barnier - still no clarity from UK.

Davis - reiterating a none clarity filled Florence speech.

God it's like pulling teeth!!

whitewave Mon 25-Sept-17 17:43:07

I reckon this government is aiming for a no deal. Time to start stock piling folks as there are no preparations being made.

I assume that parliament will have a vote on a no deal?

Welshwife Mon 25-Sept-17 17:53:05

By then they may have got the Henry 8th powers through!!!

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 18:01:59

Doesn't parliament have a vote in October 2018?

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 18:17:44

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-transition-period-single-market-eu-chief-negotiator-michel-barnier-talks-brussels-davis-davis-a7966616.html

She did really well, didn't she?

Merkel's chief of staff said Brexit talks are a real mess.

durhamjen Mon 25-Sept-17 18:22:12

"The UK and EU negotiating teams are now more at loggerheads than ever, with Michel Barnier explicitly ruling out transition deal talks until the divorce bill, citizens' rights, and Northern Ireland are dealt with."

Davis obviously cannot understand that the UK is a tiny little bit of the EU. He says they have to move to talks about the UK's future with the EU before they settle the divorce bill.
So May's big speech was all waffle and no substance.
Time the government grew up. But who is going to tell them so?

Welshwife Mon 25-Sept-17 18:28:54

The Govt are acting like a whinging child who does not understand that the parent will not change what they said because of continued whinging!
Must be very frustrating for Brussels!
