I really wanted to see him in London. Always respect the way that, when, at the start of his career a record label wanted him but not his band, he said it had to be all of them or none at all. And, give or take a drummer or two, the line up remained the same. One of the all time greats; I never tire of his music.
So sad to learn of Tom Petty's death. Another one of the greats. So talented. Sadly I never got to see him in concert, imagine how would have been fantastic.
Loved everything about him. His music both with his own band and the Travelling Wilburys, the fact he was a quiet unassuming, and very nice man according to those who knew him. And he was good looking too. Shall miss him a lot.
I'm another who has never heard of him, DH and I were both a bit puzzled, don't even remember seeing a picture of him. DH is very into music of 60s/70s can't understand it .
Refugee is, IMO, his best song. Stevie Nicks wanted to join the band but, although they collaborated together on some stuff, she wasn't allowed to. Their guitarist (whose name I can never remember) is one of the best ever, and Benmont Tench is an amazing organist. There's a very good documentary about the band which is actually @4 hours long but very good watching.
What about Tom Petty's "American Girl"? (My favourite.) A huge hit! I am stunned to realise that I'm actually a year older than he was....a sobering thought.
They're were more garage band/punky in the 70's, Tanith, so maybe if that isn't your dh's genre, he wouldn't have come across him. They became more mainstream from the 80's onwards.
Tegan2, we've watched that documentary, I think, and it is excellent. What a childhood he had, too.
