Let's not forget Brexit

I still feel that Brexit is wrong though have no idea how stop it. We get mixed messages on the negotiations, DD says that are going fine but the EU side says otherwise.

There was a protest in Manchester where Lib. Dems., European Movement. Open Britain and other groups made their feelings clear.

Our democracy and standard of living is under threat from dogmatism on both the left and the right.

Eu are getting bored with it.

I think you'll find MasieD that I was very torn between voting to leave or abstaining. Right up to the last minute I was very undecided. I finally asked myself that, if all those years ago, instead of the Common Market which I supported enthusiastically, I had been asked to support what it has now turned into, the answer would have definitely been NO. So if I wouldn't have voted the EU in its present form then, why would I now? so NO it was. I have changed my mind since then - with hindsight, I should have abstained; this was my first instinct and I should have stuck to it, but Emily Pankhurst and all that made me feel that I must vote - I was wrong!

But this is what no deal will mean, put simply.

I thought you agreed with free movement

I like the humour, firecracker grin

But I don't like hypocrisy. Yet it's something Farage seems to be very skilled in.

durhamjen Wed 18-Oct-17 19:50:24

If Farage went to Germany and took German nationality, we could stop him coming back in! There's a thought.

whitewave Wed 18-Oct-17 20:04:43

We wish

Welshwife Wed 18-Oct-17 21:15:38

I think the Germans refused him nationality!

Tegan2 Wed 18-Oct-17 21:17:48

Even Trump had the sense not to give him a job...

jura2 Wed 18-Oct-17 22:01:58

Farage better not even think of coming to live in Switzerland - or I'll make it my job to make him persona non grata for sure sad

Tegan2 Wed 18-Oct-17 22:03:49

grin

kittysjones.wordpress.com/2017/10/18/government-refuse-to-publish-brexit-impact-assessment-we-need-to-ask-why/

I'd quite like a Brexiteer to explain why the government shouldn't give us the information. After all, if there's nothing to hide...

Tegan2 Wed 18-Oct-17 22:06:41

Ah, but 'the enemy' would know then, wouldn't they. And that would seriously mess up the negotiations which are going swimmingly [not].

I thought Hammond had apologised for that remark. They are not still the enemy, are they?
They are our friends and allies, the people the government need to butter up, unlike the people who voted for them.

Tegan2 Wed 18-Oct-17 22:14:00

Yes; he said it was a 'bad choice of words' [must have been spending too much time with BoJo ...]

durhamjen Wed 18-Oct-17 22:26:58

Of course, they will be the enemy if this happens, as holidays in the EU are the most important thing in life to some people.

Brexit bill delayed for a month as the government is worried about it being defeated.

MaizieD Thu 19-Oct-17 00:23:03

Ah, but 'the enemy' would know then, wouldn't they.

The 'enemy' are neither deaf, blind nor unintelligent. They will have a pretty good idea of what is in those impact papers... In fact, the whole world probably has a pretty good idea. grin

I'm not as vociferous on Brexit as I have been in the past. I've joined various groups and signed several petitions. I have written to various MP's and party leaders. All letters/emails may have been read but none have been responded to. I've just bought through OpenBritain a copy of Nick Clegg's book "Brexit How to Stop it and Make Britain Great again". You get it through the OpenBritain shop for £4.49(half price) and pick it from your nearest Waterstones. That aside it doesn't really tell me much I didn't already know but it does explains things clearly.

I couple of days I posted in this thread a link to a petition

The government response shows typical blinkered arrogance and needs to be read even if you've signed already.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/200004

The penultimate paragraph in their response shows just how much contempt they hold parliament, let alone the electorate in.

"Both Houses of Parliament will have the opportunity to vote on the final agreement reached with the EU before it is concluded. This will be a meaningful vote which will give MPs the choice to either accept the final agreement or leave the EU with no agreement."

No option for even parliament to say "ExitBrexit".

Signing petitions generally achieves little even when millions of us sign the petition. Brexit at all costs is not what most leave voters voted for, it is what the government is prepared to railroad through.

Parliament and government will yield to public opinion but only if it is strong enough. Mobilizing public opinion is the only way to wake them up. The media, TV, press and even Facebook, Twitter holds the key people power.

Spread your wings beyond Gransnet and Buzz50. Closed circuit protest is generally protest pointless.

Firecracker123 Thu 19-Oct-17 08:25:09

Cindersdad are you Nick Clegg in disguise ? otherwise why are you pushing his book I thought advertising was not allowed on Gransnet.

www.theweek.co.uk/brexit/65461/brexit-eu-withdrawal-bill-delayed-again-over-fears-of-tory-rebellion

Don't give up yet, Cindersdad, either on here or in real life.
So many people have changed their minds about voting to leave, it's getting quite heartening.
There are still court cases about the validity of article 50, as you will know from OpenBritain.

Cindersdad Thu 19-Oct-17 08:45:20

No Firecracker I'm not Nick Clegg though do generally agree with his politics. To make people aware of books or anything allows them to choose, it may be advertising but I do say that it doesn't really say anything new.

I want him to get back into parliament as soon as the opportunity arises. Just think what the Tories would have done unfettered if the moderating hand of the Libdems had not exercised some control.

He was naive and trusting to think that Cameron would have treated him fairly.

Maggiemaybe Thu 19-Oct-17 08:46:21

I would imagine anyone who cares enough about the subject has already “spread their wings beyond Gransnet”, Cindersdad. What a patronising comment.
