Corbyns unknown peace prize was in the Mail today apparently. He joins a long list of people awarded peace prizes you've never heard of. Like the Confucius Peace Prize won by Mugabe.

Can't read the FT article.
Not going to sign up to anything to do with Murdoch.

But both articles are about business not trusting McDonnell and Corbyn, if what you said originally was true.

Primrose65 Sat 23-Dec-17 18:26:02

There was a similar article in the New European

Having read both articles Jen, they are not really similar at all. The FT article was not about renationalisation.
I think you need to re-read it!

How much does renationalisation of all those companies cost?

The FT article does say that the £250 billion that McDonnell wants to borrow for capital projects will damage the UK's credit rating.

Josh Hardie, deputy director-general for policy at the CBI, said: “If to fund some of these things, business is seen as a bottomless pit, that will damage growth and investment. If the idea is that it can all be paid for by excessive borrowing and punitive taxation, they need to understand what the impact will be on investment and growth.”

Less than 5% of privatised shares are held by pension funds, yet such a fuss is made of it.
It's more worrying that over 50% are held by other parts of the world.

I noticed that two water companies have decided to close their funds in the Cayman Islands. What were they doing, having funds in tax havens?

Hardly an unbiased link

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 14:11:50

Grumppa, here's the response about shareholders.

Amazing how few are pensionholders.

Nothing to prove 83% of the population of England voted in favour

Do they? I haven't been asked , 83% of a county, a town, a political party ?

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 13:26:21

weownit.org.uk/node/1588

83% of the public want water to be renationalised.

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 13:22:28

There are certain things which are natural monopolies, such as water, gas, electricity and the railways.
Why should other EU countries governments own our railways, yet our own government does not?
Why should EU countries enjoy publicly owned railways, but ours be owned by those same companies?
The UK network is about 30% more expensive than other EU railways.
www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/4203/realising-the-potential-of-gb-rail-summary.pdf

So pensioners can't afford to heat their homes but it's okay because pension funds are shareholders in British Gas?
Doesn't seem fair to me.

Water is an even more obvious example of a natural monopoly.
corporatewatch.org/energy-rail-and-water-privatisation-costs-uk-households-250-a-year/

A third of the money you pay for your water goes to banks and investors.
How much better would it be if it went to repairing the networks, stopping leaks, etc., rather than to investors who do not pay their taxes in this country.

grumppa Sat 23-Dec-17 12:43:51

Do you resent profits going to the shareholders of other companies, or just the ones running the privatised industries? The actual shareholders are often the same, e.g. pension funds.

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 11:59:10

There was a similar article in the New European.

www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/beleaguered-businesses-fearing-corbyn-labour-government-more-than-brexit-1-5322038

However, when you read it, you find out that the beleagured businesses are the rail companies and the utilities that Corbyn and McDonnell want to renationalise.
So do just about all who voted for them, as we resent having to give profits to shareholders instead of putting them back into the companies themselves.

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 11:50:57

How many of May's cabinet are millionnaires?

Primrose65 Sat 23-Dec-17 11:50:10

No idea trisher but the FT didn't seem to feel the need to report on business groups criticising them.
Is that relevant to an article criticising McDonnell and how he doesn't understand business? Surely the comparison is implied.

trisher Sat 23-Dec-17 11:45:34

How many of May's cabinet have run a business?

Primrose65 Sat 23-Dec-17 11:43:24

Article from the FT today highlighting how John McDonnell just doesn't understand how the economy works or business in general.

Outgoing head of EEF manufacturers’ lobby breaks silence to attack Labour

"A Labour government under Jeremy Corbyn would be a nightmarish prospect for the business world, the outgoing head of the Engineering Employers’ Federation has warned.

Terry Scuoler spent seven years at the helm of the group, which represents Britain’s biggest manufacturers and is politically neutral.

While publicly castigating “big business”, Mr Corbyn has presented the party as the one to defend the interests of smaller companies.

Adam Marshall, director-general of the British Chambers of Commerce, said the group’s members do not like “artificial” attempts to divide businesses of different sizes from each other.

None of the individuals in major positions in the shadow cabinet have ever run a business, bar Keir Starmer, who co-founded a legal chambers. "

Exactly what I thought, whitewave.

Anniebach Fri 22-Dec-17 21:54:50

Jura, I just repeated what many said, he did have a choice when it came to propping up a Tory government , and I do know Libs who were furious about him looking so chirpy in the rose garden. I like Clegg.

lemongrove Fri 22-Dec-17 21:25:01

Too much Baileys!?

Primrose65 Fri 22-Dec-17 21:16:35

I'm really looking forward to his Christmas message to the people of Venezuela.

durhamjen Fri 22-Dec-17 20:27:43

You'd think those who want PR would jump at the chance to do so and tell us they had.
Obviously not Corbyn's inertia.

whitewave Fri 22-Dec-17 20:24:45

No?

durhamjen Fri 22-Dec-17 20:23:34

Has anyone signed the Christmas card to Corbyn asking him to vote for PR?
