More Brexit lunacy

£490 million wasted spent on changing the colour of our passports. Which we could have done at any time in the last 30 years. Burgundy wasn't obligatory; not every EU country has a burgundy passport.

How many more £millions is this futile Brexit exercise going to cost the UK?

Somewhat ironic that the new blue is very similar to the colour of the EU flag...

That's what Branson did to the NHS in Surrey, isn't it, sued it for profits it expected to make.

This is interesting.

Why Brexit is dangerous. Read the reply about the book.

Was Blair wrong with his views on brexit this morning?

whitewave Thu 04-Jan-18 12:39:11

What did he say?

mostlyharmless Thu 04-Jan-18 14:20:00

I'm always worried that Blair talking about Brexit will just harm the Remain cause. He talks sense but there's so much anti-Blair sentiment around.
He advocated a referendum on the terms of Brexit as, he says, the public couldn't make an informed vote in the EU Referendum when they didn't know what Brexit would really mean so they should have the chance to express their opinion when the terms of Brexit are clear.

Is anyone else confused by the "Open Britain" campaign? I'm not sure what they really stand for.

mostlyharmless Thu 04-Jan-18 14:46:55

I think I've just answered my own question. There seem to be TWO groups called "Open Britain". One is pro Brexit (the one with a Union Jack symbol) and one is against a hard Brexit!
I looked Open Britain up the other day because one of the people killed in the Australian seaplane crash worked for them. Turns out he worked for the anti Brexit group.
Very confusing!!!

durhamjen Thu 04-Jan-18 19:44:37

Had an email from Open Britain today, signed by Sir Nick Clegg. That's the anti-Brexit group.

This is about superhuman Fox.

I see Gove is trying to reassure farmers post Brexit. The only way he can convince them is to shelter them to the extent he is mimicking membership.

'The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.' John Galbraith.

Gove as clueless as anyone else in the cabinet.

The Cabinet minister will add: “We will design a scheme accessible to almost any land owner or manager who wishes to enhance the natural environment by planting woodland, providing new habitats for wildlife, increasing biodiversity, contributing to improved water quality and returning cultivated land to wildflower meadows or other more natural states.”

I like wildflower meadows, etc., but shouldn't he be telling farmers that they should grow more food to make up for what we will lose after Brexit?

mostlyharmless Fri 05-Jan-18 13:51:12

I think the government needs a crash course in economics. And another in the realities of trade deals.

MaizieD Fri 05-Jan-18 14:22:49

shouldn't he be telling farmers that they should grow more food to make up for what we will lose after Brexit?

I thought we were going to get a flood of cheap food from all over the world when we leave the EU. Not, of course, that we have the trade deals set up for it but that's a minor detail, isn't it?

durhamjen Fri 05-Jan-18 14:26:13

But we are going to export our superior grade food to the rest of the world - apart from Europe.
That'll do a lot for climate change, won't it?

MaizieD Fri 05-Jan-18 15:07:09

I see from twitter that Brexiteers are asking for the return of beer glasses stamped with a crown and measuring in pints (a bit ironic that they're all made in France...)

And the Sun is moaning that there's no Brexit stamp planned.

Nice to see they're worried about Really Important things.

whitewave Fri 05-Jan-18 15:39:16

Hammond is refusing to rule out the customs union. It won’t be long before he’s refusing to rule out the single market.

MaizieD Fri 05-Jan-18 15:44:33

Well, if all that Leavers want is blue passports, Brexit stamps and pint glasses I'm sure they can be arranged and they'll never notice if we don't actually leave.

whitewave Fri 05-Jan-18 16:03:12

#Article50.

Joanna Cherry QC tweeted

“Cross party petition seeking a ruling from the ECJ on whether the U.K. can unilaterally revoke article 50 if the deal is unacceptable.”

The writer of the Article says it is, so it will be interesting to hear the ECJs ruling.
We have accepted parliament as sovereign so in the event of a dreadful deal I wonder what will happen?

durhamjen Fri 05-Jan-18 16:16:56

You're probably right, Maizie.

durhamjen Fri 05-Jan-18 18:32:16

In my opinion, of course. Others might think differently.
