More Brexit lunacy

£490 million wasted spent on changing the colour of our passports. Which we could have done at any time in the last 30 years. Burgundy wasn't obligatory; not every EU country has a burgundy passport.

How many more £millions is this futile Brexit exercise going to cost the UK?

Somewhat ironic that the new blue is very similar to the colour of the EU flag...

Cllr Tom Bewick; Lab Westbourne has tweeted [this is remarking on the number of UKIP voters that have switched to Labour] 'the Party can afford to lose a few liberal snowflakes here or there if it delivers a socialist government free of the neo liberal EU'. Can't help but feel his attitude sums up a lot of people in the party at the moment. What about the liberal snowflakes that have supported Labour forever, Tom? [sad[ sad....[like me...]

Chuka Umunna om twitter asking the question “what undermines May at the negotiating table?”

Two main things.

1. Calling the unnecessary election where she lost her majority( and having to rely on people like the DUP.) And lost her ability to carry the HOC on Brexit related matters.

2. Rushed to start the A50 process without having a clear plan or idea of what the Brexit process would look like. Most diplomats agree that that is the single biggest (and devastating) mistake she made.

Ah that makes sense -

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 18:10:39

She is also on the board of the New Schools Network, with friend Toby.

Fernandes is now in the DExEU, so needs to talk about it. I hope her boss agrees, otherwise she'll be out tomorrow.

Suella Fernandes

Tweeted “a no deal will be great for us”

I trust that she will now go into detail why it will be so great. Otherwise we must assume it is yet another loony statement of non-fact.

I saw that, jura. More of an idiot than I thought him. Perhaps he fell asleep during some important speeches he made.

Here's a very heartening article.

For those who say the EU needs us more than we need them.

95% of UKIP voters voted Leave unsurprisingly.

mostlyharmless Tue 09-Jan-18 16:22:09

wally I don't know where you get your information from but every source of voting results I see states that Labour voters voted 65% Remain.

Now we get to another level of lunacy - David Davis is officially complaining that the EU is making plans in case of a 'no deal' scenario !?! The 'No Deal' scenario that HE, David Davis, has threatened the EU with !?! WHAT?!?

He is also complaining that the EU is treating the UK as a third country already, and this is going to cost billions of contracts and firms to relocate elsewhere.

Now - it is not as experts from all walks of life did not explain and warn about this before the vote- and were told it was all 'project fear'. It is beyond belief and incompetence.

Because the trade deals are with the EU and not the U.K.

If we drop out of the SM and CU the closest relationship the EU and U.K. can expect is is that of a free trade deal, similar to Canada.

If we can secure that we can trade with the EU without tariffs, country of origin checks and non-tariff barriers.

But negotiating one would take much longer than the time left and it is in any case never likely to be signed.

With regard to the row:-

Trade deals are no longer popular, because of their complexity and growing public wariness means that there hasn’t been a major world deal for 25 years.

Bilateral agreements are the new alternative. But we know where that leads us with TTIP and the sort of noises coming out of the US

The reality of trade deals is that they are vulnerable to every whim of national governments and lobby group. Things get quickly bogged down in domestic politics.

The reality of U.K. trade deal is however that it would be heavily reliant on services which we know are the most complex.

So even if the U.K. has an army of trade negotiators which it doesn’t it is impossible to negotiate a deal within the time left.

If there is no interim deal in place for immediately after Brexit we will face a cliff edge of trade havoc and severe economic contraction.

Why wouldn't the countries who already trade with us carry on trading?
Unless they can get a better deal ( and good on them if they can) why stop.

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 15:24:45

Watching Barry Gardiner on parliament TV, who is explaining Labour Brexit policy very well.

whitewave Tue 09-Jan-18 15:22:38

Brussels

“ we are surprised that the U.K. government is surprised that the EU is preparing for a scenario announced by the U.K. government”

grin it is becoming ever more embarrassing

whitewave Tue 09-Jan-18 15:19:22

Chuka Umunna posted

“ Fox has just promised in parliament that he will have new trade agreements with all the countries the U.K. currently has trade agreements with by March 2019”

Do we take that as a down right lie, ignorance or simply not living on this planet?

durhamjen Tue 09-Jan-18 15:15:49

Is that why UKIP has no MPs?
How many Labour voters defected to UKIP?

Jalima1108 Tue 09-Jan-18 14:58:38

Many Labour voters had defected to UKIP by the time of the Referendum, so if it could be argued that not many Labour voters did vote leave - it could be because they were no longer Labour voters at that time.

Wally Tue 09-Jan-18 14:47:22

I think you've got that wrong the vast majority of Labour voters voted leave.

Wally Tue 09-Jan-18 14:43:43

Well I'm a brexiteer Mary and I couldn't care less what colour the passports are.

mostlyharmless Tue 09-Jan-18 13:18:31

I see Corbyn has been "empty-chaired" at the SNP soft Brexit summit. Very frustrating.
Didn't the vast majority of Labour voters vote Remain?

whitewave Tue 09-Jan-18 11:05:23

I know - it is so frustrating, but I do think as I said on another thread that this year will/must resolve many issues and I am quite certain that the remain argument will win the day in the Labour Party. At the very least a very soft Brexit. It must!! Otherwise we are facing disaster for all those labour voters who have everything to lose.

Welshwife Tue 09-Jan-18 10:53:18

You could well be right - in which case he should ask Starmer what he should say instead of coming out with these statements.
