I can remember hitch-hiking too Day6 - the thought of my DD and DGD doing that fills me with horror! However, we were more terrified by some of the bad driving and always thought we would be OK because there were two of us.

We could compare IQ scores if that would make people feel good Primrose.

I think only about 3% of school leavers went to university in the early sixties, and believe me, they did not all appear to be that intelligent. Some of them were either stupid or able to give a good impression of a stupid person.

Someone I know was a lecturer at a college in the late sixties and I remember him saying then "It is impossible to underestimate the intelligence of the students".

I don't really know what intelligent young people did in the 1960s but it's pretty obvious they didn't all become students.

I think I'm intelligent. Most posters here are, in my opinion. I've certainly learnt a lot from many posters, even ones I disagree with.

Also explain how the vast majority of the working and elderly population of the UK (and not only 'the poor' you are forever mentioning) would benefit? Thanks. We'd hate to be forgotten, or just the suppliers of funds for Labour plans. Not fair really, is it?

I'd hope as a tax payer and long term contributor to the UKs coffers that there might be something in it for me. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Bear in mind, most of the over 60s are still paying taxes via occupational pensions or work.

Tell us how EVERYONE in the UK would be better off under Cobyn and Momentum's Labour. Thanks.

I don't think I said the old system was fair GGMk2 I did say the present system is unworkable and will result in a massive debt the tax payer will have to pay off.

Even with grants for Higher Education etc some families were too poor to let their 16 year olds to stay on at school for the sixth form.

I was the lucky one in the family. My siblings didn't benefit from a University education, although they have done well for themselves in terms of career. Today, we'd have all stayed on at school and gone to Uni, as my children have done. It was a huge sacrifice for my parents to allow me to have two years in the sixth form and three years away studying. It really meant no more income for the household. I remember my Dad sending me postal orders for paltry amounts so I could pay for the coach home instead of hitch-hiking. I worked through every student break as my parents couldn't really afford me to live off them without contributing. Times were very hard. Dad was also hit by all the wild cat strikes of the 60s and 70s and I remember him crying at the kitchen table late at night because we had very little coming in to the house.

Sorry Wilma I attacked "old lefties" who have lost sight of the ideals and policies they once had. I really don't know if this applies to you, if it doesn't I apologise. But I don't apologise to anyone who posts that they believe in left wing policies and then castigates anyone who wants to see such policies brought back.
