The Poverty of Brexit

Poverty of ideas
Poverty of economy

It seems that NI is as useless said to stay in the Single Market according to EU draft.

Expect a major row from the headbangers and denial from Number 10

Round and around we go.

As your quote says whitewave we still have two choices until 29 April 2019. We can bet on our very good future in the EU or on the fantasy future of the Brexiteers.

We don't have long. All I can do is back, sometimes financially, those who are still fighting for the EU. If anything Boris's speech yesterday has made me realise we have little time and the fight must be better made.

It was never "the will of the country" to leave in the way we are being offered. It is the will of an extreme few.

What does Democracy mean to you?

Can it ever be 'Democracy' if a campaign is based on lie after lie? My answer is a clear NO:

It seems that, in this country, that seems to actually define democracy. And that is why I will never accept the referendum result as being a democratic one. A referendum based on a vote for the final terms of brexit I would honour but, hey, 'the people' won't be allowed to do that, will they?

durhamjen Thu 15-Feb-18 13:45:06

An excellent video, jura.
I'd like a brexiteer's response to that. If they watch it all, that is.

These things would not have happened if it wasn't for Brexit.

"The speech began as if addressed to a skittish and anxious patient in need of reassurance. She’d got it into her silly little head that Brexit meant Britain turning its back on the world. Doctor Johnson reached into his big, soft bag and rummaged around. “Let’s see if we have something to help you,” he told her and us. And brought out a pack of old aspirations, a couple of hints of big things to come, a reference to the Babylonians and a used peroration."

The start of David Aaronovitch's speech in the Times. Can't read any more of it, but I'm sure Brexiteers can give us some more of it.
The title is "Can any of us believe a word Johnson says?"

varian Thu 15-Feb-18 19:47:45

No, we can't dj

GracesGranMK2 Thu 15-Feb-18 20:02:41

Jen, there is a bit about David Davis in the middle and then he goes on to say that Johnson may think that the hour has come and he is the cometh-ing man. If he were he should have said something along the lines of:

Yes, I get it. I’ll be candid. It has all been far more complicated than many of us had believed. Yes, many of the assumptions we made — like David Davis’s — were simplistic and wildly optimistic. Some people have actually been rather ridiculous. And no, we may have miscalculated the negotiating priorities of the other EU members. And yes, the assessments from the Treasury, the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and the Bank of England are unlikely all to be wrong. We will indeed take a hit. It will take a long time and be a long haul before we begin to see any benefit from this. But the decision has been made and we must do the best we can with it, and make it to the nearest thing which you and I want to see (even if many of my more nationalist colleagues don’t) — an open, global society and economy. And we need you to help us with this.”

durhamjen Thu 15-Feb-18 20:09:01

That's interesting, GracesGran. Who do you think is responsible for the £350 million a week simplistic statement about the NHS? I thought that was Boris himself.

Whitewave
Your post on another thread RE European growth on 10 year high.
Easily done when the ECB is loaning € 60 billion a month to banks at 0.25% interest. But this is coming to an end soon, and then it's payback time. The problems that you foresee for the uk will be as nothing when this crap hits the fan.

Another post on facebook from someone from Germany whose wife is in banking and they're hoping she will be relocated to Europe as they no longer feel welcome here. We are losing the brightest and the best sad.

Do Brexiteers really want this to happen?

Take back control and hand it over to the US?

Thanks for posting that whitewave. I've had a look at it and have come to the conclusion that the Labour Party wants to remain in the EU. Why don't they just say so?

jura2 Sun 18-Feb-18 16:49:58

Tegan- I am hoping the same ... as I really do not want to go back to the UK at the moment. If things go wrong with the City- my grandchildren will hopefully come to live much nearer. As dual nationals who are fluent in French - all doors open here for daughters and families.

durhamjen Sun 18-Feb-18 17:14:33

Because they might lose votes, varian?
They are allowing the Tories to mess everything up first.

varian Sun 18-Feb-18 17:26:49

Most Labour voters want to stay in the EU. Is that not so?

whitewave Sun 18-Feb-18 17:31:39

Thornberry - announced labour’s intention of staying in CU.

durhamjen Sun 18-Feb-18 18:37:36

It could be announced after the local elections in May, so those voters who voted for Brexit in the North still vote for Labour.
The far North East has its first Tory MP since 1973. Before that it was Alan Beith, liberal then libdem, 1973 to 2015.
