The comments on that link you provide, jalima, are quite enlightening. I've never understood what was meant by the "there is no such thing as society" quote. I have a much better idea now. It's quite philosophical when you see aspects of the wider context.

And it doesn't mean what I think people have tended to assume it meant.

The beliefs surrounding the women's suffragist movement are in many cases clouded and uninformed. If I was of a different race I would look at them and think they were mainly white. Much as I look at them objectively now and realise some of them were not interested in and indeed opposed universal suffrage. Unfortunately the actuallity has been obscured by a myth. All women suffragists were not'suffragettes' for example and would have been insulted to be called this.

Following your branch from the main conversation Iam, I wonder if it was actually the Baby Boomer generation who were the "me" generation; who dropped being part of society in order to be "me"? In the past all our churches would have been doing such things but now so many of them only have services one week in three or have been sold off to become "converted" just as we, perhaps without really noticing it, have become "converted" to believing we don't need societies structures.

Going full circle that would tell me that a party which is trying to listen, hear and understand why people feel so disenfranchised might be doing the right thing. Yes, if the fear and anger is based on misconceptions it needs explaining but it needs more than fine words. We need a society where on a daily basis people believe that those in power are listening and care about others lives because they can see that in action.

But of an aside but thus week, two gtr Manchester mosques have stayed open all night to offer warmth, shelter and clothes to homeless people. A mosque in our town works daily offering essentials to homeless people.
