Well okay maybe very was a bit of an exaggeration. Should have said “quite”.

ninny Sat 24-Mar-18 15:25:46

Over 70,000 now. At least you signed the petition Gillybob.

The usual GN suspects ganging up but hey ho par for the course on here. Carry on.

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 15:35:53

Yes I did sign it ninny and was very happy to do so. I don’t have any hang ups about the Daily Mail although I take a lot of what they say with a pinch of salt but feel that this petition can only be a good thing.

Under EU procurement rules for contracts over a certain value we have to open up the competition to all in EU. However, it does appear the French found a get out clause "security reasons". It will be interesting to see if it is valid and could be used.

It's a shame that people are focussing on the trivia rather than some of the really important issues of leaving the EU.

If only people were so worried about the Irish border or the provisions for EU citizens in Britain or British citizens in the EU!

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 15:56:00

I don’t think you can describe UK passports being manufactured in France,Amsterdam, Poland or wherever as trivial.

Gerispringer Sat 24-Mar-18 16:19:58

ninny "The usual GN suspects ganging up"

Why is more than one person disagreeing with a poster "ganging up"??? do you think people contact each other and say "lets all disagree wth so-and -so?"

"the Usual Daily Mail readers and Ukippers ganging up" could be said and be just as accurate (i.e. NOT)

Gerispringer Sat 24-Mar-18 16:21:54

Maybe we should also ask the question why was the British contract bid so expensive? How much are the directors/ shareholders etc of De La Rue paid?

Nelliemoser Sat 24-Mar-18 16:28:37

No flipping way. If all some posters are concerned about, is the colour of a flipping passport then God help us all.

As the DM is making it's usual not so subtle comments over the colour of our flipping passports. There is no way I am posting on that.

ninny Sat 24-Mar-18 17:03:02

Nellimoser if you had taken time to read the Dairy Mail petition you would see it is about the contract to produce the new passport not the colour. Take time to read the petition before jumping to conclusions or are you another one of the Daily Mail haters. They did contribute to charging for plastic bags and also a petition now for a deposit scheme for bottles.

Welshwife Sat 24-Mar-18 17:06:59

I understood that the empty passport would be made wherever and all the info added in U.K. when you think about it that has to be the case or they would need to stop the four hour service.
I think that they should be totally made in U.K. but I am surprised at nothing this Govt says or does. I also read that the crossing of the Ts and dotting of the I s still has to take place.

OldMeg Sat 24-Mar-18 17:15:08

Don’t be so bloody rude ninny. No one is ‘ganging up’ just because we don’t agree with you.

And there are good historic reasons why papers like the DM are odious to some.

ninny Sat 24-Mar-18 17:30:11

Over 81,000 now. Why come on here Oldmeg if you are not signing the petition.

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 17:33:57

Ninny is spot on about “ jumping to conclusions” without actually reading the petition.

I would turn your comment right on its head Gerispringer and ask Why ( or rather how ) was the French/Dutch bid so cheap ? Because they are partly owned by the French government who are subsidising the bid perhaps ? Because the passports will really be manufacturers in Poland maybe ? hmm

petra Sat 24-Mar-18 17:36:59

lets all disagree with so and so
Well actually they do Gerispringer
Maryeliza in a privious user name did it. But unfortunately while private messaging she linked in the person she was trying to get ignored.

petra Sat 24-Mar-18 17:41:55

gillybob
Maybe the eu are trying to get the Poles back on side.
They have become a bit anti eu lately, so maybe this is a little 'sweetner' wink

gillybob Sat 24-Mar-18 17:45:35

Maybe petra or maybe it’s just that in Poland they don’t have anywhere near as strict Health and Safety rules and the wages and related employment costs are a fraction of what we pay here.

OldMeg Sat 24-Mar-18 17:47:53

I think you will find I’m permitted to read and contribute to any thread on GN. To suggest otherwise is against GN guidelines.

jura2 Sat 24-Mar-18 17:50:58

hear hear OldMeg- the cheek sad

OldMeg Sat 24-Mar-18 17:51:35

I thought Poland was a full member of the EU and therefore subject to all employment law and H&S regulations.......?

petra Sat 24-Mar-18 18:00:59

OldMeg
Take a visit there. You could be on another continent as far as rules and regulations are concerned. It's the same with the majority of eastern block countries.
That's not from the daily mail, that's from me living in one for 5 years and visiting all of them.

ninny Sat 24-Mar-18 18:01:08

Pathetic jura2 but carry on, reading other posts on GN thought you bailed out on the UK years ago.

Welshwife Sat 24-Mar-18 18:09:09

petra how long ago did you live in an Eastern bloc country? I am just wondering if things have improved for the people in the intervening years and as they have needed to conform.
However I gather from another post I saw that Poland are anti abortion which the women are trying to get changed.

OldMeg Sat 24-Mar-18 18:10:50

I bow to your superior knowledge then petra and is it true also that the passports will be made in Poland or is that just another untruth, deception, distortion, falsification, myth, fabrication, tall story?

Chewbacca Sat 24-Mar-18 18:12:38

Irrespective of Brexit, I want to keep as much manufacturin and business in the UK. And I don't care if this campaign is in the Daily Mail, the Guardian or on the back of the Beano. I've signed it because I care about British workers.
