A continuation of Momentum/Intertia/Magnetism/Elasticity but with a less scientific bias. grin

A thread about Corbyn. For lovers and haters.

Aw, ? Again , I do like this man

Day6 Wed 11-Apr-18 15:51:11

Oldwoman70 that made me laugh! grin

No one will dispute that!

lemongrove Wed 11-Apr-18 16:15:05

Ah, Walter Softy? Who likes books of ‘very hard maths’ grin

lemongrove Wed 11-Apr-18 16:17:14

Corbyn and the whole shadow cabinet seem to be very quiet just lately, so not much to say about them just at the moment. For a change.

Just heard the news on the radio. Corbychev plays a clever game I think.

No war is good. No wars have happy outcomes, many have repurcussions, so he will always be able to say "I told you so" should we engage in fighting overseas.

He has asked that Parliament be consulted before engaging in any action against Assad and co.

That's fair enough. May has not committed us to anything despite Trump's blustering.

I imagine many of us are torn. Lives will be lost whether we enter the fray or whether we standby and watch. I do think we have to confront aggressors and the use of chemical weapons is something we cannot ignore.

Cobychev does have to stop fence-sitting. We cannot normalise the use of chemical weapons. Some issues need all out condemnation.

Anniebach Wed 11-Apr-18 17:42:09

Did this genius of a leader realy declare - no war is good ?

Good grief , he will no doubt get applauded for this declaration

Primrose65 Wed 11-Apr-18 19:04:49

I've just heard some gossip that he's going to offer free bus passes for the under 25's tomorrow. The consensus was 'if he's going to buy votes, Amazon vouchers are better'.

Day6 It's statements like that - no war is good - that I find trivialising. No one can disagree, yet it's distilling all the complexities of the geopolitical conflict in Syria into a soundbite. It sounds like an old Ladybird book to me. War is not good. Jeremy looks sad. Here is the dog.

There's no easy decision to make on Syria and every option available is rubbish in my opinion.

Aren't we lucky and safe to have real patriots like Trump to look after us hey - I feel all safe, warm and fuzzy.

mostlyharmless Wed 11-Apr-18 19:21:05

I’m sure Trump and Putin have nothing but the world’s interests at heart! grin

jura2 Wed 11-Apr-18 19:24:55

Day6-not many lessons learnt or winners in nuclear war.

Most of us realised, a long time ago, that deterrence would only last until madmen rose to power again.

Primrose65 Wed 11-Apr-18 19:32:15

Well, that escalated quickly jura.

jura2 Wed 11-Apr-18 19:37:26

It did- Trump did.

trisher Wed 11-Apr-18 19:41:22

Yet I seem to remember a certain Labour leader taking us into a war he sold as a 'just' war-that is a 'good' war. A war that would overthrow a tyrant and destroy his weapons of mass destruction. Corbyn then as now was against that war.

Baggs Wed 11-Apr-18 20:08:52

What, if anything, has Corbyn said about the overthrow of the Nazis?

Primrose65 Wed 11-Apr-18 20:15:37

I found this report in the Indy about a speech he made at Chatham House. WW2 was a 'just war'.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/jeremy-corbyn-just-war-1945-chatham-house-talk-labour-party-general-elections-a7733916.html

Anniebach Wed 11-Apr-18 20:24:32

For years we referred to The Troubles in N.I. when realy it was a war. Corbyn had no problem with supporting one side

Baggs Wed 11-Apr-18 20:27:43

Thanks, primrose.

lemongrove Wed 11-Apr-18 20:31:16

I doubt, had he been alive at the time he would have thought WW2 a ‘just war’ though Primrose. He would have been applauding Chamberlain ( a useful idiot to Hitler).

Jalima1108 Wed 11-Apr-18 20:39:23

I was thinking this morning that Corbyn reminds me of Chamberlain.

Jalima1108 Wed 11-Apr-18 20:39:39

Not that I was around then iyswim!

Iam64 Wed 11-Apr-18 21:07:48

I haven't seen a single person posting here who has anything positive to say about Blair's actions and statements in the lead up and during the Iraq war.
The country took to the streets to say "not in my name'. The march I was on had ex Vietnam veterans, ex Falkland veterans, lots of young people, many many people from my generation. Robin Cook resigned, no one I knew, friend, family, Labour / Conservative/ Lib Dems saw the invasion as anything other than a disaster.
So, Corbyn voted the right way as he has on many other occasions. That doesn't mean he's right about everything.

lemongrove Wed 11-Apr-18 21:12:30

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

mostlyharmless Wed 11-Apr-18 21:36:42

It’s easy and quick to start a war, but re-establishing a peaceful country later takes years as we know from Iraq.
The instability might spread to surrounding countries. Children killed and injured, refugees fleeing, needing medical care, emergency shelter and food and water.

Talks and political and economic sanctions are not as satisfying for hawks like Trump (and Putin) but should be the first call. Anything but war.

Day6 Thu 12-Apr-18 00:35:12

I agree that there are no easy solutions to the conflict in Syria. I'd hate to be the PM. Like her or loathe her, Mrs May has had, as far as I can remember, the most gruelling of Premierships. Cameron passed her the poisoned chalice so she's negotiating Brexit with Barnier and Juncker, chemical weapons have been used against a spy on UK soil, she's had to call out Russia, unite most of the western world in condemnation of Russia, assess the crisis in Syria, and all the time she's had to play ball with one of the strangest POTUS to ever hold office.

The Syrian situation is complex and is a no win situation. There are reasons for us to show our might against evil regimes, to prevent the normalisation of chemical weapons, but reasons to back off as well, as mentioned by others.

All the time we are reminded of Blair's choices. I imagine such thoughts are uppermost in the minds of TH and the military strategists advising her.

It begs the question: what would Corbyn do, if anything?
