Likely consequenses of brexit

If brexit happens, as I fear it probably will, the consequences, both intended and unintended, are likely to damage this country to an unprecedented extent.

As it is the most important political issue of our times, I believe we should continue to discuss it on GN, but we must be prepared for a continuence of the blind unreasoning dogma we have had so far from the little band of brexitextreemists on GN who will just keep their fingers in their ears.

Even so, I think it is important to continue to seek out the truth. We owe it to our children and grandchildren.

KPMG have produced this diminishing Sovereignty scale showing the position of each Brexit negotiating option from hard to soft to full absorption by the EU. The name of the KPMG document is 'Brexit Basics - The four Freedoms".

It might be interesting as we start to horse trade with the EU and show how far away from a hard brexit we are prepared to move to escape the EU.
At the moment unless Theresa May puts forward something less than a hard Brexit, Barnier has been clear they will not budge. So with the recent Chequers meeting and the White Paper next week it looks like we now have a pink line from which to at least start to get out of the EU. It really is an insidious set up the EU.

KPMG is very able to move operations abroad, and ready too.

We mustn't forget that the majority no longer want to Brexit since finding out it means they lose jobs, homes and standard of living. It is no longer an exercise for the government regardless of our democracy. It has to return to the People to decide on the details.

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 15:48:12

‘ the majority no longer want to Brexit’......*really*?
You may not want to endrel but you can’t possibly speak for the masses.

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 15:50:05

There will be much horse trading still no doubt, but Barnier must be pleased that there is now a real possibility of doing a trade deal with us.

jura2 Sat 07-Jul-18 15:57:01

So let's put it to the vote then Lemongrove ... and see

There is a very good reason why KPMG and other top financial services are doing a lot of research into all the options ahead. To prepare for relocation if things don't work out to their advantage and that of their customers.

80% of the UK market is in services. And a massive % of the tax we need to run NHS and all the ther essential services in the UK.

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 16:16:11

One referendum is enough, we can’t keep having them.
Very few people voted for the way we leave the EU in any case, just that we do leave it.
I think the UK and the EU can really get on and do a deal now.

Eastern European countries are deeply worried about the prospect of the UK being shut out of Galileo, and other security matters, but have been warned to toe the EU line on brexit or they will be punished financially! So much for individual countries having their say!! Why on earth would we want to stay in an organisation with the morals of the Mafia? Money is poured into poor countries, money that they can never ever begin to pay back, which loosely means that they are trapped and prevented from ever giving an opinion apart from the official one, till the end of time - just like the USSR, China, North Korea, all is well on the surface, but dissension is not tolerated and will be severely punished! obviously not by physical methods, but by financial ones!
Whatever sort of way is that to carry on? How on earth can we be complicit in that? When it was Greece pulled down into penury, we were guilty by association, and yes, I did and do feel ashamed at our perceived acquiescence. It was an awful way to treat a population, and here we go again, do as we tell you or else???? except hopefully it'll be they not we!

One Referendum was on the basic idea, without any detail, massive lies, misinformation and fraudulently run. and won by a tiny majority.
so a vote on the final deal would be totally fair, of course.

And if you are sure no-one has changed their mind, why are you afraid of a vote on the final deal?

Luckylegs9 Sat 07-Jul-18 16:39:56

If you vote for something and you lose, you cannot do it again. I fail to see remainers logic. Democracy is precious as is our Health Service. I think in the next ten years other countries will follow our stance.

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 16:58:56

There won’t be another people’s vote jura
Anything different will be decided in Parliament.

Yes niggly Greece was treated appallingly, with nothing any EU country could do or say ( well, they could, but wouldn't have got anywhere.)

nigglynellie Sat 07-Jul-18 16:59:01

I don't think the EU will still exist in 10 years, transparency over their expenses has just been narrowly defeated, so 'expense' money spent can remain completely unaccountable and a good time had by all!! This will inevitably cause more muted dissent amongst the 'peasants' and a gift for the far right. The EU will eventually be the architect of its own downfall and we can and must be, well shot before that happens!

nigglynellie Sat 07-Jul-18 17:00:40

You're right Lemon, there was nothing we could say or do, but we should have tried!!

jura2 Sat 07-Jul-18 17:02:00

Luckylegs, oh yes you can if it is proven, as it has officially and absolutely without doubt, that the vote was illegal and fraudulent.

Just as you can win the Tour de France, the Olympics, or anything else and be stripped of your Medal or Trophy if proven to have won illegally.

Anyhow, no one is talking about a second vote on Brexit, but on the final deal...

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 17:03:33

True!

All empires come to an end, and for the same reason, they get too big and over extend themselves.

MawBroon Sat 07-Jul-18 17:05:30

Oh dear, the final whistle has been blown and we are back to Brexit. ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 17:06:08

It won’t be proven though jura there isn’t a hope in hell of proving anything.
Only the HOC will have any input on the final deal.

Jalima1108 Sat 07-Jul-18 17:07:10

Some people never left the fight discussion MawBroon!

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 17:07:44

Maw grin but, but........this is the Brexit thread!

Jalima1108 Sat 07-Jul-18 17:08:22

I was just about to mention empires and the way the elite treated the slaves and peasants lemongrove

lemongrove Sat 07-Jul-18 17:08:48

The footie was great btw ???????⚽️?

nigglynellie Sat 07-Jul-18 17:38:54

The EU is corrupt and fraudulent, perhaps they should be stripped of their authority?!!

Welshwife Sat 07-Jul-18 18:21:09

Proof please - not just hearsay.

GillT57 Sat 07-Jul-18 18:28:06

I have to agree with lemon , there is unlikely to be another referendum. Ever. The British electorate has shown itself to be gullible and easily fooled by liars, cheats and charlatans. Pity Cameron didn't take this into account before he so arrogantly called this referendum, didn't like the answer and ran away. Bloody man. As a member of the QT pointed out on Thursday, if this had been a Trade Union Ballot for say strike action, it would have been invalid.
