Trump Blimp
(261 Posts)Im not at all pro trump but IMO this is awful
It is not a "protest". Ive been on protests. They have a point and an aim
What is point/aim here?
That they don't like his appearance & don't want UK to even try to negotiate?
They don't want us to be the "bigger person" as a nation? they want us to be as childish and petty as him?
Its embarrassing and diplomatically dangerous, NOT an exercise in constructive protect or free speech
Trump said today he expects the U.K. to be “in turmoil”. I’m sure he won’t see the blimp and he will tweet about the mess the UK is in.
He doesn't like being poked fun at either.
It is ensuring the Donald's visit gets lots of publicity
That's my argument against it
A deafening silence would be preference - and no visual but silent protests either.
There's nothing an egotist dislikes more than being ignored.
Trump is a bad man, a petty fascist. I'd approve of empty streets and turning of backs. The Queen has to do her duty which in this case is to act the cardboard cutout. It's a shame that she has to touch his flesh.
Demos or marches are more effective
I think that its more that they are more dignified than sitting behind a computer crowd funding a blimp!
for disclosure I've "sat behind my computer" crowd funded lots of anti trump groups but mainly funds that provided lawyers etc to groups affected by his policies.
If I was able to go on the march I would, even if it is not effective, it shows the opposition to what Trump stands for is alive and kicking, and I like the feeling of solidarity with like minded people. At first I was in two minds about the Blimp, but on reflection I think it's very appropriate for the intended target. Did anyone see the Panorama prog last night?
Iam but sometimes it’s just right to demonstrate your opposition to something isn’t it? A march, a blimp, a letter to the paper, a petition - as to effectiveness, well hindsight is a wonderful gift.
lemongrove - we can disagree about the Blimp, it makes me smile, makes others irritated. It is ensuring the Donald's visit gets lots of publicity so I suppose he may even feel it's a beautiful balloon, the most beautiful balloon in the country. Alternatively, he may become very cross indeed.
I have been on many marches and used to believe they are effective. A good friend tells me research says otherwise. I marched against the invasion of Iraq, along with half the country it seemed at the time. It didn't work, did it and we live with the consequences.
I do hope I'm not talking myself out of political protest here.
Iam
I’m sure that most who object ( mildly) to the blimp is that it’s rude and childish and ( in the end) pointless, because he isn’t going anywhere near.
Demos or marches are more effective.
I doubt it matters that much though to most of us, if it flies or doesn’t.
Brid no ‘battle lines’ but I hate all the ganging up that often goes on here.
It would have been nicer if you had just said to Ally
‘Let’s agree to disagree’.
Ally has made no awful personal remarks to you, but just consider your last post to her on here.
Allygran1,your post can only be described as desperate & Pathetic & extremely sad but I can now see that you have no self awareness what so ever, you cannot think outside your own bubble, therefore I wish you well in it, it’s a bit like that saying Men are from Mars, woman are from Venus, let’s just settle for you and I from different planets.
Given the way that this thread has become utter paranoid nonsense I 'm switching my focus to a different thread. Packs? Gangs? Bullying?
I feel like asking you to name the members of this imaginary 'pack' but CBA!
You'd have a problem though as your 'conspiracy theory' exists only in your rather confused head.
Over and out!I
I still don't understand why the idea of flying the blimp Trump offends people. He is astoundingly rude to anyone who doesn't agree with him. He's a dreadful role model for young people and stirs up the worst in his supporters. His use of language is rude and infantile, he hurls insults around in a way unbecoming of anyone and totally unacceptable in a Potus.
Fly that balloon folks. I can't get to London for the march but will be there in spirit.
Yes, this country has welcomed other despots in the name of diplomacy and bridge building (or indeed Trade). This is different. This man is one of the most powerful leaders in the world, he's the leader of a country with which we have strong alliances. The PM has to use diplomatic language in her dealings with him. That doesn't mean the rest of us have to follow suit.

Lemongrove you say :
The bitching is all from the other side. That sounds to me very much like you yourself have drawn up battle lines !"
Heavens to Murgatroyd Bridgeit! The number of times that some people try to get a sensible and intelligent thread going on here that is then destroyed by a few, and we all know who they are is appalling. The nasty little asides, the direct attacks, the picking people up about silly little things, name calling, it really is just what bullies do everywhere. So to accuse Lemongrove of drawing up "battle lines "as you put it is simply ludicrous.
Since the intention is I am sure to stop the thread, or bully the 'target' to going off the thread, that makes me for one, more determined to stay on and try to get back to a discussion.
As for 'gangs" mcem, it is more than gangs, in your defence of each other you become a 'pack'.
HildaW that is always an option. As you say though if a question is asked about a post, it would be polite to answer don't you think!
MaizieD Here is the link:

Sorry should have included it in the post.
MaizieD, thanks for the correction, although Sheffield was the HQ for the NUM and Arthur Scargill had his office there.
The move from London was part of the reinforcement of what came to be known as the 'socialist republic of South Yorkshire" largely brought about by David Blunkets administration of the Council, and the re-siting of what was then a powerful( naturally socialist) Union HQ the NUM.
The NUM building was commissioned by Arthur Scargill in the early 1980s in an effort to move the NUM from London to the friendlier territory of the "Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire".[1] Construction began in 1986[2] and the building opened in 1988.
mcem, having just returned from a lovely evening out, with my nearest and dearest, a meal, and a glass of wine, on a cool summer evening in glorious UK, with not a mention of Brexit, politics or even 'the socialist republic of Yorkshire", I have just seen your post.
Your post was to Fennel not to me.
As you were, ladies!
I think that Sheffield was known as "the socialist republic of Yorkshire" but that is when Scargill ruled the roost.
I lived in Sheffield when it was dubbed the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire and it was an excellent place to live in. Fantastic cheap public transport system, lively new theatre, excellent library and art gallery, superb concerts at the City Hall and good museums of its industrial heritage. Not to mention a string of well maintained parks through which you could practically walk from one side of the city to the other...
It had nothing at all to do with Scargill, it was a Steel city, not mining.
Just saying...
Good point Jalima

(I think taking babies and children hostage to force asylum-seeking parents out of the country ranks pretty highly on the loathsome scale.
I agree, it does.
But 'disappearing' people, expelling thousands from their homes because they are the 'wrong religion' (Myanmar) and other such human rights abuses rank just as highly imo - and these leaders have been accorded state visits and feted here.
absent I don’t think anyone is overlooking anything, more that they feel a proper demonstration or march would be the better and more grown up thing to do.
