An interesting piece on Radio 4 this morning.

I took your advice *Joelsnan' and searched on thecwords you suggested. I didn't get the results you said I would:

www.google.co.uk/search?q=uk+companies+outsourcing+to+EU&oq=uk+companies+outsourcing+to+EU&aqs=chrome..69i57j33.18734j1j8&client=tablet-android-asus-rev&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

I also read 2 of your links (ft is paywalled). I hadn't realised that the outsourcing of IT work had a devaststing effect on communities hmm Or that India was in the EU.

But thanks for trying

Jalima1108 Thu 26-Jul-18 12:58:12

Sigh - I thought this thread was doing so well
Perhaps your optimism is misplaced Luckygirl - hoping that a Brexit thread could remain civilised
hmm

Jalima1108 Thu 26-Jul-18 13:34:08

They have no money, it's ours!!!
Absolutely!

By the time Councils, Assemblies, national Governments, EU Government have creamed off what they need to run (lavishly in some cases) and for their pet projects, no wonder the public (taxpayers) feel as if they are handing out a begging bowl.

Of course you won't, you will only see that which meets the crieria of your agenda. Which i suppose to some degree I will do too, but i do try to be ibjective.
Below is a list compiled to 2016 to make it easier for you to see.

Hmm... I use a search engine that claims it doesn't track my searches or my browsing history. Which should mean that the results it gives me aren't biased in any way.

I shall look at your links. Thanks

Should point out though that Jaguar/Landrover is not a British company any more.

I see no reason at all why a Brexit thread should not remain civilized.

lemongrove Fri 27-Jul-18 11:42:35

I agree Luckygirl but if it does it will be a first on here.

Jalima1108 Fri 27-Jul-18 11:50:10

Me neither but I haven't seen one yet, Luckygirl and best to live in hope

Fingers crossed for this one.

Jalima1108 Fri 27-Jul-18 11:53:18

I listened to the link in the OP and found it very thoughtful and balanced with much to ponder.

He is saying what I believe most 'leavers' have been saying for some time: the eu is a spent force
I would like to know what remainders thought of it.
He wasn't just giving his opinion of what might/might not happen, but hard facts.

crystaltipps Fri 27-Jul-18 15:11:20

I’m not sure why Land Rover moving to Slovakia etc is evidence of the EU being a spent force rather the reverse I would think. Isn’t it owned by an Indian company anyway? They want to have easy access to EU markets which is why company wish to relocate post Brexit.

crystaltipps Fri 27-Jul-18 15:15:14

One of the things the EU does with the money is support some of the poorer regions. Interestingly, 7 out of the 10 poorest regions in Northern Europe are here in the U.K.. but we also have the richest region - London. Which accounts for the imbalance. I will be surprised if our poorer regions get much of a handout anytime in the next 50 years.

MaizieD Fri 27-Jul-18 15:24:27

I said what I thought of it. It's a point of view.

MaizieD Fri 27-Jul-18 15:35:08

I had a look at this blog Joelsnan

janetteheffernan.blogspot.com/2016/06/brexit-list-of-uk-companies-no-longer.html

I noted that a significant number of the companies named are not British. If British companies are sold off to foreign buyers then they will take decisions which make economic sense to them, not sentimental. I see no reason why Brexit would restore those jobs to the UK.

Ironic to see Dyson in the list.

Joelsnan Fri 27-Jul-18 16:11:01

MaizieD
There may be some of those company’s which have now been bought by overseas investors (actually most of Uk businesses, finance and infrastructure is now owned by overseas owners).
But there has been a slow insidious move.of true UK company’s to this region utilising indirect EU subsidies (it is supposedly illegal to pay companies directly to move) so of course there are workarounds. Sadly I don’t have all day to trawl for these companies. I will try and spend some time finding more.

Your statement RE the poorest areas in the eu was from a report called The inequality briefing
It was highly critized at the time for exceptional cherry picking of data
For anyone who is interested in this ludicrous 'fact' there is a report from Fact Check disputing this claim.
Lots of other info as well relating to this paper.

I can understand why you didn't put this in your post.
For those of you who might believe that jagua Land Rover are leaving the uk, they're not, only a small part.
A spokesman for the car maker said:
" This significant investment and technology up grade in Solihull in order to accommodate our next generation of flagship Land Rover models, and the refit of our Halewood plant for our next Epoque is proof that we remain committed both to the uk and to the transformation and growth
I wondered why my daughter hadn't said anything as she works for them.

Deedaa Fri 27-Jul-18 16:45:30

Lemongrove I've just noticed that you included those too young to vote among the people who don't matter. They are the people who are going to be most affected by the coming car crash.

lemongrove Fri 27-Jul-18 17:23:18

Deedaa ...who said ‘they don’t matter?’
What I was actually saying is that you cannot say ( as Varian did say ) that 48 million people didn’t vote for Brexit, as there were many reasons why some couldn’t, including the ones who are toddlers.
All that ‘matters’ in terms of voting, are those who are entitled to vote.

lemongrove Fri 27-Jul-18 17:24:16

Your opinion that it will be a car crash, but not mine.
