Brexit has not yet happened, and there can be no certainty that it ever will.

Jalima words beloved by some: ‘the masses ‘( when they mean poor duped sods, who they themselves are way above)
grin
‘The workers’! (All honest and hardworking who are salivating for a Socialist government.)
‘People’s March’ ( or People’s Anything) All righteous in their cause, whatever it may be.

More to the point what would the government be doing with the millions spent trying to negotiate a deal with EU? Social Care, hospitals, children’s services, schools??

MaizieD Thu 01-Nov-18 08:08:16

Bit slow catching on to that one, aren't you, Jalima?

The News And Politics outrage meter must be malfunctioning hmm

Jalima1108 Wed 31-Oct-18 23:05:13

I am happy to forget we ever had the stupid misinformation portrayed upon the masses during the referendum and keep to the status Quo

the masses hmm

Varian, how would you be spending your time if the Brexit vote had gone your way?? ?????????????????????????????????????

The government have been telling EU citizens for months that they will be able to stay in the UK, and keep their rights as settled citizens if we leave the EU.

But yesterday it emerged that these are empty words.

It seems that there are no provisions in place for employers to determine when an EU citizen came to the UK – and therefore, whether they are able to employ them.

The Conservatives’ hostile environment checks have already wreaked havoc on the lives of many members from the Windrush generation - and others.

And in just five months, these Conservative Ministers seem happy to do it all over again, and destroy the lives of EU citizens who have every right to be in the UK.

The Government’s incompetence in planning for Brexit has real world consequences.

Not all Leave voters are rejecting the evidence. Some have realised they were misled by the lies of the Leave campaign.

Political scientist Professor Jolyon Howarth now concludes that brexit has become un-negotiable and Theresa May has a constitutional duty to admit that to the British people.

"Mrs May has no alternative now, if she is to be honest with herself (a Remainer) and with the British people (who were misinformed). As the country’s leader and the person most invested in seeking a positive outcome, she must finally admit the truth in a full and frank address to the British people. Brexit was a mistake. There is no positive outcome that meets the red lines of the two parties. To her credit, she made an honest and valiant attempt to negotiate what finally transpired to be the unnegotiable. It is not her fault that she failed. The only sensible course, therefore, is to suspend Article 50 and request a return to the status-quo ante. Hard-line Brexiters will continue to fret and froth, but the vast majority of English citizens (and Brexit is overwhelmingly a problem for the English) will recognize that Brexit was, quite simply, a bad idea. They will then get on with their lives."

Because he had no plan if the result was, what it turned out to be Maizie. I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong, but didn't some of the EU members warn him against holding a referendum?

I'm glad that he did and that I along with every one else had the opportunity to vote but for him to have gone ahead with no idea what he'd do if he lostshock. Well, maybe he did know what he'd do if he lost; resign despite his assurances that wouldn't.

I read an interesting article: ”where hearts rule minds.” It looks at the phenomenon that ”many people now value emotion and instinct over rational assessment. It has become almost fashionable to reject specialists and trust your feelings instead.” The article refers to professor Tom Nichols who states that ”it is a measure of intelligence and education to recognise the limitations of one's knowledge – to display intellectual humility – while it is often a symptom of stupidity and ignorance stubbornly to cling to indefensible positions”.
A worrying trend. Or is it just part of human nature, as Fennel suggests?

Lazigirl Sun 28-Oct-18 20:39:01

I read in the Observer today In a highly significant move, a group of MPs from the SNP, Tory, and Labour parties have said they will table a “killer” amendment in favour of a public vote, whenever the prime minister tables a motion to approve whatever Brexit deal she brings back from Brussels. The amendment if passed will state that acceptance of the prime minister’s deal must be dependent on a public vote taking place beforehand in which people would be offered the choice of leaving on the terms of that deal or staying in the EU. The group is apparently led by Sarah Wollaston MP. I suppose it will depend in the end which way the Labour Party decide to jump......

Fennel Sun 28-Oct-18 17:55:48

Someone made the point weeks ago that emotionally held opinions aren't susceptible to reason.
That's human nature.

MaizieD Sun 28-Oct-18 17:10:07

Though, of course, no-one on Gnet ever believed it...

varian Sun 28-Oct-18 15:00:04

A new study has found that a majority of voters (42%) believed the “we send the EU £350m a week - let’s fund our NHS instead” message to still be true. Just 36% believed it to be false, while 22% were unsure.

Researchers from King’s College London have concluded despite attempts to debunk the myths behind the message, it has had little impact on those that still believe in the figures.

Polling - carried out by Ipsos MORI - found that Conservative voters and pro-Brexit voters were the most susceptible to the £350m line. It found that 54% of Tory voters and 61% of Leave voters believed the claim compared with 33% of Labour voters and 22% of Lib Dem voters - and 23% of Remain voters.

It is very difficult to understand the mentality of someone who persistently prefers lies to truth.

I am happy to forget we ever had the stupid misinformation portrayed upon the masses during the referendum and keep to the status Quo. I honestly believe we are in for a major disaster if we go into the unknown with no agreement and future generations will never forgive for our stupid pigheaded stances of not setting out all the true facts before making the most important decision in our life time.
Blind prejudices are no reasons for making such incredible mistakes based on lies and sheer dishonesty.

MaizieD Sun 28-Oct-18 09:17:56

I thought he'd be the hero of the 52%, Smileless grin

Why do you think he's a brainless idiot?

Smileless2012 Sun 28-Oct-18 08:50:40

That's something that you and I can agree on when it comes to Cameron Maizie "What a brainless idiot he is".

MaizieD Sun 28-Oct-18 00:07:54

Yes, but then Cameron went round making 'promises' about the resultt being honoured, and it was a once in ageneration vote, which he absolutely no right, under our constitution, to make. Only Parliament could have made those 'promises' and even then they could have been 'broken' by a subsequent parliament because a parliament cannot bind its successor.

And he only said it to shut the right-wing and UKIP up as he fully expected Remain to win.

What a brainless idiot he is....

The 2015 Referendum Act was passed against a background including a clear briefing paper to parliamentarians explaining that the referendum would have advisory effect only.

Claim
Leave campaigners before the referendum weren’t consistent on whether Brexit meant leaving the customs union.

Conclusion
The customs union was rarely mentioned by Leave campaigners before the referendum. There were generally calls for the UK to have an independent trade policy, though messages about specific trading arrangements weren’t always consistent.

Instead of taking back control, our Government is giving up control every step of the way, embarking on a blind Brexit – facing a long road ahead with no sense of what to expect with each step we take.

New laws, new regulatory principles, new market rules – all of these require time to adapt to – and instead our Government is prepared to leave without a deal. This would be the equivalent of looking into an economic abyss and preparing to jump without a parachute.

"Shocked cabinet told no-deal Brexit may force government to operate lorry ferries"

www.itv.com/news/2018-10-23/shocked-cabinet-told-no-deal-brexit-may-force-government-to-operate-lorry-ferries/

How bad do things have to get before these reckless politicians admit that our best possible future would be to remain in the EU?

MaizieD Mon 22-Oct-18 23:22:22

One image shared widely on social media showed the leaders of France, Germany and Luxembourg taking a break from negotiations while sitting at a long table where beer, wine and french fries were plentiful — but the British prime minister was noticeably absent."

Rather confused reporting here. The 'leaders' of the EU27 aren't negotiating with May; the EU27's chief negotiator is Barnier who is negotiating to the EU27's brief.

I suspect the photo must refer to the EU summit last week which May only attended briefly to give a 15 minute presentation before the dinner. No Brexit negotiations were involved at all.

Smileless2012 Mon 22-Oct-18 22:05:02

Your last paragraph says more about the EU than it does about TM varian. Thank goodness we're leaving.
