Should the electorate have the final say on Brexit?

It is hard to believe Number 10 saying giving the People a final say on Brexit is a betrayal, when it will be the electorate themselves making the final decision. Surely, our democracy wins by deciding on agreement No 10 wishes to impose that may be very different to what the leading leave campaigners promised and the electorate accepted ie more money for the NHS, for Care, for our Infrastructure, and greater trade opportunities etc, etc.
Today, A key Conservative party donor has also called for a People’s vote to be held on the final Brexit deal amid new warnings about the huge financial costs of leaving the EU without an agreement.
Sir Simon Robertson, a former banker and Rolls-Royce chairman. Has told the Observer he was “deeply depressed” by the direction of the Brexit debate and he believed there should be a chance for a vote on the final deal hammered out with Brussels.
His backing for a second public vote suggests that there is support for the move among senior Tory Remainers.

“I think it is complete balderdash to say the people have spoken, therefore you can’t go back. The people can speak again – why can’t we have another vote on it?” Robertson told the Observer. “We had a brilliant deal with Europe. We had an opt-out on ever-closer union, we weren’t in the single currency and we were not in Schengen [the EU’s passport-free travel area]. We had a perfect arrangement. We are now going to end up with one where, at the end of things, we won’t have a final say.
If a final democratic resolution to Brexit is not offered to the electorate I fear there is likely to be such severe anger and possible backlash that we have never seen in the UK in our lifetime, that in my view we must avoid by giving the Nation the final say rather than having it imposed by dogma.

Of course it would be a useless exercise. Those who voted remain on this site are forever reiterating their believe that a referendum is only ever advisory. If this is truly the case then why bother if it’s results should not be acted upon. Or is it the case that a referendum is only valid if it achieves the anticipated outcome Remainers desire?

I wish you were able to paste the link to that poll Grannygravy. The only one I can find with those sorts of figures was in early June. www.deltapoll.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Brext-Trade-180601_FT.pdf

crystaltipps Fri 30-Nov-18 21:42:16

But May is acting upon it. So why shouldn’t another vote go ahead? . If you really believe in the “will of the people “ you should be in favour of as many votes as possible.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 30-Nov-18 22:03:33

Nandalot it was on Twitter today, I am sorry, but I really am a complete technophobe.

Because those who voted remain have always started that acting on the referendum was illegal as it was advisory only. However we went into the Common Market on the basis of a referendum and no one cried foul about that. I don’t really care if there is or isn’t another vote. I just consider it wholly hypocritical and a pervertion of democracy

MaizieD Fri 30-Nov-18 22:50:09

Because those who voted remain have always started that acting on the referendum was illegal as it was advisory only.

I don't think anyone has said that acting on the referendum was 'illegal', just that it wasn't actually mandatory, as it was only advisory.

However, disclosures of illegality on the part of some Leave campaigns, since the ref (with possibly more still to come), call into question the validity of the result.

I know that every Leave voter on Gnet will put their hands on their hearts and swear blind that absolutely nothing at all influenced their vote to leave (^really? did they not hear, see or read anything at all before the referendum and so kept themselves utterly uncontaminated by all the stuff that was being churned out^?) but we do have to keep reminding ourselves that there is a world beyond Gnet in which people were influenced by Leave propaganda and, who knows, by the specifically targetted 'dark' facebook adverts which only people likely to be influenced by them actually saw.

I fail to understand why allowing another vote when you actually have an idea of what you’re voting for is “undemocratic.” I am against referendums per se but since we’ve had one without the information of what a final deal might look like which was a mistake , then we should have one when the information is on the table.

Surely your contention that Leave voters were 'contaminated' by misinformation before the referendum should be equally if not more forcefully applied to the Remain voters. Many of the prophets of doom have been discredited, (thinking of Barak Obama's 'Back of the queue' for one). So many people are now living with stress and anxiety (as evident with some on here) based upon this misinformation and great globs of supposition which continues to this day.

maryeliza54 Sat 01-Dec-18 09:49:38

Joel we didn’t go into the Common Market on the basis of a referendum, we were already in it and the referendum was about if we wanted to stay in

crystaltipps Sat 01-Dec-18 09:51:43

Well the prophets of doom may still be right as we haven’t left yet and will surely be weakened if we leave without a deal.

Sam Gyimah, the latest minister to resign from Theresa May's cabinet tells Radio 4 'we have given up our voice, our veto and our vote'"

So much for the slogan "take back control". If brexit were to go ahead we would have given up control - in addition to it costing us a fortune and making our country infinitely weaker. Time to bin brexit before its too late.

Pity this 60 second video www.facebook.com/scientistsforeu/videos/304487707072288/ couldn't have been distributed before the Brexit vote. Short, factual and to the point. Who lnows what the result might have been?.

Dyffryn Mon 03-Dec-18 11:32:52

Bit late with that video. It was posted some days ago.
BTW, did you read the comments. The vast majority slated it grin

MaizieD Mon 03-Dec-18 13:10:06

The vast majority slated it

Just confirming the stereotype of the Brexit voter, really. Not very bright with an aversion to facts. (Gnetters excepted, of course)

suzied Mon 03-Dec-18 16:08:52

Everyone knows Brexit is going down the pan from all sides of the argument.

petra Mon 03-Dec-18 16:21:33

Totally agree that the Brexit that TM is trying to get through is going/gone grin down the pan but there's still leaving without a deal.

suzied Mon 03-Dec-18 16:24:48

Leaving without ideal would mean the economy is well and truly down the pan.

suzied Mon 03-Dec-18 16:25:36

without a deal is not ideal!

MaizieD Mon 03-Dec-18 19:40:41

but there's still leaving without a deal.

petra, would you be very kind and explain, in some detail, just what you think leaving without a deal would entail?

Labaik Mon 03-Dec-18 19:52:24

It means taking back control, silly you..no need for minor details other than that...grin...

The Independent has handed in a petition carrying more than one million names to Downing Street, demanding the British public be given a final say on the outcome of Brexit.

A group representing The Independent’s Final Say campaign handed over the petition, along with another one including more than 337,000 names collected by the People’s Vote initiative, as Theresa May prepared for what is set to be a bruising five-day Commons debate on her Brexit deal.

Pressure for a new referendum is increasing ahead of the vote that will come at the end of that debate next week, with the prime minister looking at a heavy personal defeat if MPs reject the deal she agreed with the EU.

Polling commissioned by Avaaz shows that Britain overwhelmingly rejects Theresa May’s Brexit deal, and wants MPs to vote it down in Parliament!

63% of people with a view say they don’t want the deal if it makes us poorer, as the government says it will. And 70% want MPs to vote it down if they don’t feel it’s in our interest!
