Serena’s “meltdown “

As anti- discrimination as the next person, I was nevertheless appalled by her tantrum on court recently.
It was shocking and frankly embarrassing.
Williams insisted that the umpire Carlos Ramos had been sexist because male players don’t get punished for behaving as she did.
“I’m here fighting for women’s rights and for women’s equality and for all kinds of stuff,” she protested, sending up sexist (possibly even racist) grievance flak to distract attention from one key fact: she was a bad loser.
Peehaps she is not entirely wrong. There remains a huge double standard when it comes to how female behaviour is regarded.
However, on this occasion Williams didn’t have a good reason. The stats from the US Open on code violations contradict her: Men 86, Women 22.
What price sportsmanlike behaviour? What is the right way to behave to respect both sport and our opponents?
The bottom line is, Venus Williams may have a great talent but also seems to have a massive ego.
And she has shown herself to be a very bad loser, ultimately doing no favours to women in sport.

Yes, you changed the subject on an old thread.

Would have thought a new thread for this year would be ok?

Avor2 Mon 01-Jul-19 19:47:46

Notice how I changed the subject peace and love ?

Wimbledon 2019 at last. Well done Cory Gauff(?) on beating Venus Williams. I do love Venus but 15 year old Cori was brilliant. Did anyone think Venus' hair looked like Olive Oyle? - just a silly thought ?

Apology accepted Iam64

Clearly petra, it would seem so.

Chewbacca
It's not the first and it won't be the last, with this particular poster. Some are chosen, some are not grin

grin

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 21:50:25

And Maryeliza's post isn't at all aggressive is it? But Maw's is?

wtf?

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 21:47:47

Both still there, I misunderstood.

NanKate Thu 13-Sept-18 21:46:21

I didn’t think to look Jalima to see if the offending post had been removed.

How can HQ have got it so wrong. I think Maw is due an apology but I suspect it won’t be forthcoming.

Chewbacca Thu 13-Sept-18 21:38:33

Just back from an evening out and I'm shock and confused that you got sent a reprimand Maw for replying in kind to Maryeliza's post. What on earth is going on at GNHQ these days? The swearing and cursing that is used so liberally on MN makes your eyes bleed. Maryeliza is the only person that I've ever seen swear here on GN. So if GNHQ find it acceptable on MN, why is it not on GN? And if it is acceptable on GN, why does Maw warrant a telling off for being aggressive and Maryeliza's post is still there. Come on GNHQ, can you explain this to us please?

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 21:13:54

Perhaps she got a reprimand too as it has gone all quiet from that quarter.
but her nasty post is still there.

Apologies to sparkle for assuming she didn't understand racism, it sounds as though you do.

MawBroon - I staggered that your post could be deemed aggressive. Not something I can imagine you being accused of at all.

Racism and sexism are subjects that raise all kinds of irritation. Difficult subjects -my sympathies remain with SW and I still don't like the cartoon. I appreciate others feel differently.

Overthehills Thu 13-Sept-18 21:09:09

Exactly what NanKate said Maw!

NanKate Thu 13-Sept-18 20:50:33

Don’t be put off Maw it was quite understandable how you reacted to the horrid comments by maryeliza. Perhaps she got a reprimand too as it has gone all quiet from that quarter.

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 20:50:14

But john Mcinroe was about 30 years ago is that the only example of males losing it anyone can come up with

Goodness, no!!

But, in fact, McEnroe got disqualified from a tournament altogether on one occasion.

even the saintly Tim Henman got into trouble after an outburst

and many others

You think it's just Serena?
You cannot be serious.

It must be very off-putting for their opponents.
Well done, Naomi

lemongrove Thu 13-Sept-18 20:45:03

Maryeliza All black successful people in the media glare will have suffered racial abuse, not just the Williams family, it doesn't excuse any of them for throwing a childish and ugly tantrum about something which isn't racial though.
Big egos, that's the trouble.

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 20:36:07

Many of us return to work when our babies are under a year old.
But regaining your fitness as a top athlete in order to compete at that level is a bit different to 'going back to work'.

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 20:33:41

I just Googled that cartoon. Surely it's a caricature? It certainly captured the tantrum which is what it was.
Yes, it is and it did.

It is no more offensive than those of McEnroe and Murray - and many others of very many prominent figures.

Overthehills Thu 13-Sept-18 20:32:44

SW was losing the match and then lost her temper. Her behaviour was a disgrace to tennis and Maw’s stats in her OP (I think) are correct.
My sympathy is entirely with Naomi Osaka whose first (let’s hope of many) Grand Slams was completely overshadowed by this prima dona.
I found the cartoon portrayed an African American having a tantrum and read no more into it. I think some on here, like on that court, are looking for racism.

Anniebach Thu 13-Sept-18 20:27:19

Thank you Sparke.

So that is the cartoon ? I think it funny , no way racist.

Serena is desperate to match Margaret Court’s record, pity she hasn’t the same calmness Margaret had.

Jane10 Thu 13-Sept-18 20:18:17

I just Googled that cartoon. Surely it's a caricature? It certainly captured the tantrum which is what it was.

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 19:58:49

I hope the poor child never has to witness such a tantrum or be in the path of one.

Me too. I do hope she becomes a two-year-old Queen of Tantrums.

I just think that Serena has come back too soon, has lost several matches and is not up to her usual standard. It's is not like going back to an office job - it takes time to regain the type of fitness required to be a top athlete.

More than anything else, I think she is angry with herself.

It's a pity she had to over-shadow some of the glory of Naomi Osaka, though.

Anniebach Thu 13-Sept-18 19:53:45

Why is it acceptable from one poster but no other poster ?

Jalima1108 Thu 13-Sept-18 19:52:16

MawBroon Thu 13-Sep-18 18:42:18

I think that says a lot about GNHQ and whoever is making the decisions these days.
