Nominee Brett Kavanaugh
(170 Posts)Did any of you watch the riveting BBC coverage of the Professor (sorry forgotten her full name) report of the alleged sexual incident over 30 years ago and then BK refuting it.
She was so very brave and came across as a credible person. He was loud, tearful, very boastful and was in fighting mood.
I don’t know what the outcome will be, but it was powerful stuff
Oh No! I’m glad I don’t live in the US.
It's a great pity IMO that the main opposition against BK centred on the Ford case. With such a long time gap and no clear evidence he really couldn't have been declared guilty without setting dangerous precedents. Now of course he will claim himself vindicated. You'd think there were other things against him that could have been made to stick.
No-one knows the truth about what happened at that party, except the two involved in this case. They had been drinking, and to be honest, to me it just sounds like drunken teenage horseplay which possibly got a bit out of hand. After all the woman isn't claiming she was raped is she?
Also this alleged assault was after all 36 years ago, and that is what I am really struggling with.
WHY on earth did she wait all that time to make this allegation?
The US administration sinks to new depths.
So you have proof Blinko that this man is guilty and that this woman is being totally truthful! Perhaps you could share this info?!
Looks like this man will be in, another Trump victory I think there will be trouble in the camp though dissatisfied women aren’t going to disappear the movement seems to be growing
We seem have got the stage where a woman can claim to have been assaulted by a man many many years ago, and, as has been seen by most of the comments on here, she is believed.
As nigglynellie said, where is the proof that the woman is telling the truth?
I am so cynical as to why she waited til now to accuse him.
Oh yes, silly me, the accusation is timed perfectly to try to destroy his political career isn't it?
JenniferEccles, can I ask, do you know anyone who has been the subject of indecent assault or behaviour. Did your working life bring you into contact with rape, indecent assault or similar dreadful experiences?
I don't mean to be rude but your assumption that "women" can make any kind of historical accusation against men and be believed is fairly staggering to me. False allegations to occur, infrequently. Genuine allegations rarely reach the courts. I'm stopping here because I fear people who get it will, well 'get it' and others just won't.
old men who now come forward with the truth about what happened to them at the hand or Priests, etc- are held as heroes- but women as liars.
It’s also a fact that the men in their forties and fifties who were sexually abused by football coaches as boys were immediately believed and seen as heroes for speaking out. The idea that sexual abuse is somehow worse for boys and men perpetuates.
This was a job interview, not a trial in a court of law. Beyond reasonable doubt was not the standard. The way Brett Kavanaugh behaved and his histrionic performance should have been enough to disqualify him. I certainly would never have employed him as a cleaner, dish-washer or clearer-up of cat litter trays, and I doubt if many of you would. It now turns out that another judge, with connection to Brett Kavanaugh, has been sitting on complaints about Kavanaugh for several weeks. The FBI investigation was a farce.
Every American who has half an ounce of brain is aware that appointing him before the mid-term elections in November when the Republicans expect to lose many seats in the House and Senate is in the hope of hustling through a legal case whereby the possibility of being tried for the same crime at both federal and state level can be quashed. I have mixed feelings about this apparent double jeopardy law but I can see that the reason Republicans want it before the elections is that it ensures that if the President pardons criminals who have been convicted by a federal court, they cannot be tried again. If he is convicted in a federal court, it may be possible for him to pardon himself and, then, not be retried in a state court.
Oh I really hope the women of America use their votes to tell trump (deliberate small t) and his awful cronies what they think of them.
The manipulation of this is stunning! This judge who has behaved throughout the period of accusation and interview in a very undignified and unprofessional manner ...regardless of the truth or otherwise of the accusation... is now a supreme judge! Wake up USA!
You can claim that " . the accusation is timed perfectly to try to destroy his political career isn't it?" but don't lose sight of the fact that the very appointment of this man is perfectly timed to get a supporter of Trump into a lifelong position in the judiciary, where he can push through Trump's dictatorial and antidemocratic policies and influence US legal proceedings for the rest of those career years.
That is anti-democratic with a small d, not just anti-Democrat with a capital D. A politically appointed judiciary puts party above the law, and judges nominated and appointed by a partisan head of state leaves the country open to the rule of a power-hungry autocrat. Courts of law should not be indebted to heads of state, even elected ones.
As others have intimated far more articulately, this fellow is creepy and his appointment does nothing to enhance the reputation of the political system in the USA.
I see from today's news that Mr T has announced that Judge K has been cleared, found innocent. Interesting process eh! No proper investigation, no court procedures yet Mr T declares it was all a conspiracy by the dreadful democrats and this man is innocent.
Be afraid world.
I felt truely nauseated listened to trumpet kiss the ground with apologies of the way K had been treated, speaking directly to K’s two daughters telling them you know what a wonderful Daddy you have ( not exact words) etc etc it was puke material
It was a shame he had such a weak and poorly acted (sob in little childish voice) accuser I wish he’d had someone with a strong story to wipe the smile of his face and the mock tears from his eyes
K for kangaroo court - verdict reached without due process of law. As a result he is now a part of the highest law court in the land.
Just how little does Mr T. understand about running a civilised country?
Well said Elegran
I think that Americans are finding out that their Constitution is n't quite as perfect as they like to think it is. It only takes a desire to hold on to power for its to be undermined. The FBI's role in this is very worrying. They should be upholding the rule of law, not kowtowing to the President.

" K for kangaroo court - verdict reached without due process of law. As a result he is now a part of the highest law court in the land."
I spoke of the Kangaroo Court scenario in my post . The Kangaroo Court is basically ' Guilty until proven Innocent.
There have been so many case cases where the Kangaroo Court has been shown to be nothing more than a body of people who for what ever their reason irrationally rely on no evidence other than a ' gut feeling '. It is not only a dangerous course to take but can and does destroy lives not only of the individual ' assumed ' to be guilty but for their families too. Lord knows we have witnessed the public Kangaroo Court at it's worst too many times.
I have not a clue which of them was telling the truth or not but the Kangaroo Court is a dire way of coming up with a supposed conclusion surely.
I note from reading this thread some make a conclusion as to an individuals guilt because of their political leanings !
I note from reading this thread some make conclusions because she was a women and therefore must be telling the truth!
Why?
I repeat I do not know , none of us know the truth but one thing that is perfectly clear due diligence and ' Innocent until proven guilty ' has once again been put out to pasture and that worries me far more to be honest.
This could happen to any one of us and what would we feel if our husband/son had to prove his innocence ?
I think this will not go away and quite possibly more accusations/revelations may be coming down the road but until a proper court and jury have heard the facts and evidence I can't go along with the Kangaroo Court.
It would have been better for all concerned if he had been tried in a real court of law, and not (essentially) in a hyped-up employment interview. Proper rules of evidence and cross-examination would have been appled to both parties, the friend who wasn't called to give their version would have been present and under oath, and a judge and jury would have given short shrift to emotional posturings. As it was, he was neither proved innocent nor guilty - the judgment was only that they accepted him into the position to which he had been proposed.
For Trump to apologise to the man when a serious allegation had been made and aired was ridiculous and showed an unacceptable degree of bias.
I agree Elegran. I believe the allegations were outside the statute of limitations. Additionally, there is the age old problem of lack of corroborative forensic or other evidence.
The reality is that false allegations are rare. Successful prosecutions are rare.
This case was complex and unpleasant enough without a Potus who has no filter, no sense of decency and is himself an ‘alleged’ mysoginistic man who admits having grabbed women by the pussy and believes they let you do anything if you’re rich,
