Aldi expansion

Aldi have announced a large expansion and are about to employ a further 1000 members of staff. They aren't worried about Brexit then.

MawBroon Tue 09-Oct-18 19:16:15

I think it’s time we discussed Brexit and the Archers don’t you?

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 19:20:21

Oh drat! Must we Maw? Can we not have even that little bit of green and pleasant land unsullied by ruddy Brexit? grin cue someone insisting Borsetshire voted Remain and should therefore be exempt.

ginny Tue 09-Oct-18 19:24:24

I have shopped in Aldi and Lidl once or twice and although cheaper I was disappointed by the quality and had to visit another shop to get items not available there.
I shop at wherever I feel I get the best value for the items I wish to buy.
Certainly nothing to do with snobbery on my part.

jura2 Tue 09-Oct-18 19:36:46

Nothing to do with snobbery, I quite happily shop in Aldi - and in France too. But then I did not vote for Brexit ;)

Pure logic and common sense.

jura2 Tue 09-Oct-18 19:40:52

And after all, Brexit was in the title- so it seems fair enough to mention it Maw and Chew, no?

Cannot see how people want to get back control from EU, by giving them their custom, somehow. They are expanding because they do know indeed, that pressure on prices post Brexit, will see people flocking to them.

As said, oh the sweet irony.

I think this is what he Readers Digest used to call “unconscious humour” grin

MawBroon Tue 09-Oct-18 19:45:22

Actually, No.
The thread title is Aldi expansion
smile

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 19:46:31

But jura how do you know if those who shop in Aldi or Lidl voted Remain or Leave? Are you suggesting that those, like yourself who voted to Remain, should be the only people who should shop there because their conscience is clear? And those who voted Leave should be hoisted on their own petard and must forever shop in the Co Op? this is becoming surreal

If they thought there were going to be supply difficulties post-Brexit they wouldn't be expanding surely?

ginny Lidl has the best peaches and nectarines I have tasted - large and very juicy! And I prefer their bananas to any others (they have Fyffes).
I don't buy my milk there because I am not sure that they give the farmers a fair deal.

Would it not make sense to buy British, if one wants to regain some form on control?
I don't think we grow those three fruits I mentioned above in the UK - we've always imported them.

Not that they are the only things I buy there.
The wine has improved tremendously - the Australian Riesling is delicious, far better than German.

grin
I'm OK, I can shop there with a clear conscience [smug] - if only we had an Aldi of course.
We don't have a Co-op either.

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 20:06:50

There are a lot of bananas on here Jalima! grin

Jalima1108 Tue 09-Oct-18 20:12:52

I do like a banana for my brekkie but it has to be the 'right' banana! And not ripe either.

Fennel Tue 09-Oct-18 20:33:26

Something that puzzles me - Aldi (and Lidl too) is a German-owned company.
Why would they choose to expand here now, just when the UK is about to leave the EU? Won't that complicate their business dealings?

Jalima1108 Tue 09-Oct-18 20:39:56

They must know things that we don't Fennel

MawBroon Tue 09-Oct-18 20:52:44

Good point Fennel and jalima
We might have to ( pace certain Gransnetters) wait and see wink

petra Tue 09-Oct-18 20:55:39

Mmmm... why do you think that is Fennel ?
Could it be that they didn't believe, George Osborne, Mark Carney, Phillip Hammond when they told us that the sky was going to fall in if we left the eu?

jura2 Tue 09-Oct-18 21:32:27

Well Chew 'But jura how do you know if those who shop in Aldi or Lidl voted Remain or Leave?'

Some people here have made it very clear. I said I voted remain, and I remember who said the same- with often giving very good reasons for doing so.

Others here made it clear they voted Leave - very few, perhaps none- explained explained why.

As for being hoisted on own petard- fair enough, I say. Your choice of words- at least be honest and stand by your vote.

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 21:54:12

Jura there is no reason, absolutely none at all, why any Gransnetter or anyone else for that matter, should have to explain why they voted as they did. This is a topic about Aldi the supermarket, not Brexit despite your assertions to the contrary. And people will shop wherever they feel they will get the best value for money, irrespective of how they voted. You can rail against the injustice of this all you like, but you cannot, and will not, change people's shopping habits, either on their retail predilictions or on their voting choices. If this continues to irk you to such an extent, I can only suggest that you contact Aldi and Lidl and request that, as from March 2019, all customers are given a lie detector test, before entering their stores, to determine how they voted and to be excluded from their stores if they fail. But be aware that this could cause a snarl up at the trolley docking station whilst customers fumble for their £1 coins. or euro

MawBroon Tue 09-Oct-18 22:04:30

How were you able to vote Jura as you live in Switzerland?.
I thought I remembered you being very vocal on behalf of expats precisely because they were denied the vote?

jura2 Tue 09-Oct-18 22:05:18

Yes, I understand this is how you feel- and we will have to agree to disagree ;)

I always have a 1E coin, a £1 coin, and a 2CHF in a separate pocket in my purse - like a Girl guide, always ready.

AS said, I personally believe that if you feel strongly about anything, you should be able to stand by it and give rational reasons. Sadly, few Leavers do. But yes, it is indeed their prerogative - even it does not make them credible.

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 22:08:44

You don't have to be credible to buy edibles.

merlotgran Tue 09-Oct-18 22:18:33

How can anyone who voted to leave not be credible if they haven't said anything? hmm

Chewbacca Tue 09-Oct-18 22:51:12

grin good question merlot. It's right up there with the question "How did the subject of supermarket expansion end up again in the Brexit conundrum"

MawBroon Wed 10-Oct-18 02:38:28

Oh dear, that killed the conversation stone dead didn’t it? confused

Blencathra Wed 10-Oct-18 06:15:16

I don't see where Brexit comes in- we all have to eat whatever. I don't have an Aldi but love Lidl - would quite happily go to Aldi if we had one.
