Iceland Christmas advert banned.

This brought tears to my eyes. Hardly surprising it's been banned, I'll try to share it on Facebook if I can work out how.

I think (hope) it will get more views because of the ban. Time we faced up to what is happening and the part we all play. Thanks for posting.

Disgusting that it’s banned, because it is so very true. Reminds me of Michael Jackson’s video to his Earth Song. Yes let’s share it with all and sundry, so whoever banned it has wasted their time and effort. Did anyone see “ Fashions Dirty Secret” showing all the pollution in foreign clothing factories .... all the dyes and chemicals are having a dreadful adverse affect. Unless this is all highlighted, things will never change and then it’ll all be too late ....

We all need to check the ingredients on any readymade foods, toiletries etc that we buy too and pressurise food manufacturers, toiletry manufacturers etc to seek a sustainable alternative to palm oil - the human impact on the earth has now overtaken that of nature's impact.

The petition has over 300,000 signatures so far. I'm not sure it will make any difference though.

They were discussing the pollution caused by textile dyeing. Cotton is the mostly costly in environmental terms.

The amount of water needed to dye a kilo of cotton is more than an adult will drink in a lifetime. The water has to be heated to very high temperatures for dye to take so there is a high cost in terms of energy use. 40% of the dye leaches out in the rinse process and goes into the water course. The real cost of a cheap T-shirt or a pair of jeans.

What a clever move by Iceland to have collaborated with the Greenpeace add.

The hard hitting extremely sad message has gone viral despite the ban to televise.

More people are now made aware of palm oil use and the destruction it’s source is causing. Big thumbs up for Iceland whose own brand products do not use palm oil.

I entirely agree with stopping palm oil production which destroys the natural habitat of the orangutans, but I now worry about the livelihood of the people employed in that industry. I hope there is a plan for them.

What hell is a Christmas Eve box?

Iceland are the only store that have Own brand Palm Oil free products. Because this advert was linked to a Green Peace film that's the reason it's been banned in this country. I've been to Borneo and the devastation the acres of Palm Oil plantations have caused is unbelievable. I think cutting back of our use of Palm Oil obsession should be for life not just for christmas. In my opinion Christmas is just a made up fantasy anyway.The Orang Utans looking their home definitely is not.

It should never have been banned: more thought provoking than talking carrots warring with parsnips. Anyone with a care for the less fortunate must, like me, be repulsed by the crude consumerism thrust at us on commercial tv.

A Christmas eve box, from what I can deduce is a crate or box sometimes decorated with the child's name. Inside are snuggly jamas, reindeer food and any other garbage you can lay your hands on.

I think it's a beautiful advert!

Banning something is the best way to create more interest, so those not wanting anyone to see this, have actually shot themselves in the foot. , I had not given Palm oil any thought, but I certainly will from now on.

I have visited Indonesia when a dd was working there, and saw for myself the miles and miles of palm oil plantations, where formerly there was virgin forest. We also visited an orang outan reserve, and saw several in the wild.

Sadly I don't think much will change until the countries concerned actually want to do something - there is too much money/big business involved. An Indonesian colleague of dd told her she was going to invest her savings in palm oil plantations, and until dd mentioned the eco/wildlife matters she hadn't even given them a thought - there was no awareness at all - and this was a girl with a university degree.

I do reflect sometimes that most of the UK was once covered with virgin forest. It was our ancestors who cleared it in order to make way for fields of crops and pasture for their animals.

Well done Iceland's marketing team. No other store xmas ad has generated so many responses on GN. Although when watching your lovely ad I wonder how many people will realise that only your own branded goods will be palm oil free.

Surely, many adverts are "political" in that they espouse certain ideas and values. I can think of several adverts that I find distasteful, with their emphasis on one upmanship, making other people jealous of what you have, greed, stereotypes, etc etc etc.

I thought it was a sweetly sad advert with a very important message - far more important that the sickly sentimental rubbish that is usually churned out at Christmas. I too will share it with others.

I have been aware of the campaign for a while and have been looking at labels to stop buying anything with palm oil in. However, manufacturers are crafty and below is a list of alternative names for palm oil. So many things have one or more of these in. I think there should be a campaign for manufacturers to put palm oil in the ingredients and not call it by another name. It is impossible to remember all these names and some things, like vegetable oil, could be perfectly OK.
