What will/can a new leader do ?

Party interest and self-interest trumps national interest. What a shower or deluge.
I will be voting again and try to persuade others to do the same.

I'm emailing my MP to ask him to support TM. This is not the time to be challenging for the leadership of the Tory party!

I don't think she saw anything of the sort. If she had I think she would have been more conciliatory and inclusive of Remainers from the start.

As it is, her rhetoric has been that of someone seeking to impose their will and indifferent to the plight of both the EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens living in Europe. And her 'citizens of nowhere' was insulting not only to them but also to Remainers.

None of her actions indicate that she knew she was taking on a poisoned chalice. They indicate her overwheening and misplaced confidence in her ability to sort out Brexit. Hubris of the worst order.

She has been conciliatory and inclusive of Remainers from the start! Being a Remainer herself: but has tried to get Brexit done to honour the referendum results.

I agree with you. The claim that the referendum result showed the ”will of the people” is just ridiculous. However, remainers have been completely ignored. You'd be forgiven to think they have no stake at all in the future of this country. As for EU nationals in the UK, of which I am one, they have been made to feel that somehow they are ”lucky to be here”. I believe Brexiteers made a huge mistake when they thought we could enter the Brexit negotiations by lording it over the other 27 nations. We were told that leaving the EU would be a piece of cake. The arrogance of it all!

MaizieD there is no way we were recovering from the banking crisis within two years! I agree with those who say it was a global recession, but there's no way that Labour could deal with the crisis, with their spend spend spend policies. And now they've elected JC as leader! What a shower - god forbid they ever get elected.

Looks like the Tory rebels will shoot themselves in both feet if as it looks like May will win the vote and struggle along with her predictable sound bites, will of the people, respect the referendum, only deal available, control of our borders etc etc, (strong and stable seems to have been dropped somewhere though). I don’t want another referendum, the last one was so toxic and ended with that poor woman being murdered I hate to think what another one would be like. I’d like a proper government that works in the interests of all the country not just a few extremists , no chance of that happening anytime soon. This whole charade has been played so badly and we can’t turn the clock back - it’s so depressing.

A new leader?

1) Accept the AWFUL deal brokered by May and the EU, which highlights just how much power Brussels will have over us

or

2) Reject the deal and wheel out the WTO deal which will have been drawn up by British politicians, expecting a bad deal from Juncker and co in Brussels.

Mind you, whoever gets power, they'll face the same disgraceful squabbling parliament and back-stabbing colleagues and their hands will be tied.

They'll probably relinquish the whole Brexit project and be piling up billions of pounds to give to Brussels to save them the agony of a difficult decision.

I hope we get a leader with the guts to say no to the Brussels deal. I doubt we will.

I am truly shocked! Brexit was not to blame for a twisted maniac going out to kill an innocent woman.

Only a Remainer could be so crass. But, it all adds up, doesn't it? It's part of the script. Food banks, the homeless, dire straits for all if we go it alone, abject poverty awaits, no more NHS and now British murderers being created because we want to break away from Brussels control.

I do hope people can see through Project Fear part two. It's disgraceful, fear-mongering manipulation of the unthinking.

day6 do you truly believe the toxic attitudes which were unearthed during the referendum campaign played no part in the murder of Jo Cox ? would that disgusting person have gone out there and shouted “Britain First” and shot her at another time? Of course I’m not saying this is an everyday occurrence and that people from all sides were not completely horrified, but it was the very existence of that campaign which stirred up this hornets’ nest of hate amongst some deranged extremists. This is why I don’t think another one should happen. I don’t think the first one should have happened either , we don’t rule by plebiscite, but by representation, our politicians are elected to act for the good of all those they represent not just those that voted for them. Can’t see much evidence of that at the moment from any political party.

.....and the 6% we would have enacted anyway. Just accepted the EU legislation because it was a quicker and simpler way of getting the law in action

Some time last year an Act was passed turning most of the EU laws into British law for just that reason.

We have always had hatred on our streets and nationalist extremists in our midst. It is not a new phenomenon, unfortunately. Why Jo Cox's death was mentioned in a Brexit discussion, when you yourself have just mentioned her killer was 'deranged, is beyond me.
